I had a torn gutenal medial tendon Dr. suggested surgery which I had...a week later I was has extreme pain was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I was admitted with a 9 cm hemotoma. Had an MRI at the hospital and was released the next day with no instructions from the Dr. Saw his PA who said I needed to see the Dr. I went as instructed the Dr. never looked at the insision, told me I didn't need therapy and that he didn't need a follow-up visit. 6 months later I was still having pain so I went to get a second opinion. Had another MRI and was told that when I was rushed to the hospital the sugery had failed. Never did Dr. Staples mentioned this, even though I sure the hospital MRI showed this result. My suggestion is to stay away. He just doesn't seem interested after the fact. read more

I had a total knee replacement about 5 years ago and I feel that I am worse off than before the surgery. After my surgery, I had pain down my leg and a swollen ankle. I went back to see Dr Staples a couple of times. I don't believe he listened to me because he kept showing me the MRI which apparently showed that the surgery was successful. He finally told me to contact his PA. I decided to see my podiatrist who was very helpful. He gave me some tips that helped ease my pain. unfortunately, I still have problems that can't be remedied. I have a constant nagging pain in my knee and I can not kneel on my left knee. If I do need to kneel, I kneel on my right knee and my left knee is stretched out to the side. I also have to have something near me so I can lean on it to get up. read more

It's been a year since my knee replacement. I'm on my second round of therapy, as the pain is worse than before the surgery and walking is an ordeal. I tried calling Staples' office and got a recording that "the mailbox was full." In February, 2025 I had the unimaginable happen, I fell off a ladder working in my backyard, which resulted in a Tibial Plateau Fracture of my right knee/leg. The E.R. Doctor told me I would be kept overnight for observation, then moved to a room and my pain would be managed while they set up a surgical consultation. I was referred to Dr. Jonathon R. Staples, M.D. the day after I got released from the hospital. This was my first broken bone and I was unsure of what to expect. My wife and I met with Dr. Staples, he quickly let me know this was a bad break, and required surgery to fix, because of the nature he wanted to do it right away and recovery time was 6-9 months, I would be off my leg for a few months(no work). He quickly reassured me it was a common procedure and was thorough with his exam and experience was second to none, he was the right person for the job. A week later I was operated on and started my healing journey. His office kept in constant contact with me and made sure I was comfortable at home. I was now going to have to get used to life with a walker and wheelchair and lots of assistance from my wife for at least the next 3-4 months with in-home PT visits for the first 6 weeks. The only hiccup we had was with my insurance and getting the pain medication issue resolved. Dr. Staples team worked tirelessly to make sure I was taken care of no matter what the need was. While my total recovery time is 6-9 months Dr. Staples and his team's part was stellar and they are helping to ensure my long term recovery. I am now able to put weight on my leg at around 3 1/2 months post op, and next stop is Outpatient PT. I should be back to work in about 2 months. If I ever am in need of an orthopedic surgeon again, Dr. Staples is who I want working on me. He is the best in the Central Valley! read more

One star is because I suppose the surgery was a success. As far as the follow up, 1 star is being generous. Once the surgery is performed, you are left on your own with no contact except for the 15 minutes provided by one visit with Dr. Staples, and one with his P.A. Neither of these appointments were anything but dismissive and perfunctory. I had one knee replaced already, and can't imagine how someone with no prior experience would handle the level of anxiety caused by this lack of care or concern. read more

Dr. Staples did my Total Hip replacement and I am 100% satisfied with the results. He is a perfectionist, professional and compassionate. His post-op follow up care was excellent too. I had physical therapy out at my house within 24 hours of my discharge from the hospital. He promised me adequate pain control and he kept his word. I met Dr. Staples after going through a shoulder injury and acute pain for over a year. Immediately after meeting Dr. Staples, I knew I was at the right place. Dr. Staples showed empathy and overall personal interest in helping me recover from my injury. I felt he was extremely thorough, and did not feel rushed, although, I had tons of questions. Immediately after the MRI results were available, Dr. Staples called me and explained all of the available treatment options, and carefully went over the pros and cons of each option. Dr. Staples did a great job ensuring I had a clear understanding of the procedures. Once the procedure was completed, Dr. Staples followed-up in multiple occasions, even when I thought he did not have to assuring me that he genuinely cared for my recovery, and he had my best interest since day one. I would strongly recommend Dr. Staples to anyone who needs to see an Orthopedic Surgeon. He's a genuine individual who I believe practices medicine because he really cares for his patients. I hope to stay away from injuries and not to require medical care anytime soon, but if I happen to ever need an orthopedic surgeon, I wouldn't hesitate to be under his care again. Dr Staples was a great surgeon for my not so typical operation and special needs. He had the skill set that matched his can co attitude. He listened to my request and questions respectfully. I went in with a semi high risk operation that the "Stanford mentor" (Dr Hudleston) previously had refused to do multiple times. The Stanford Dr. played the come back every 6 months and reevaluate game. It seemed to me, the Stanford Dr. wanted to protect his reputation at all cost and certainly add no risk before retirement. (I HAD Thought Stanford carried weight in top skilled doctors?...) He even made it clear I should seek another Dr. (only good call). After added toll on time related health, travel time and expense we were introduced to Dr. Staples, local to the Modesto area. Bottom line is Dr. Staples was a great surgeon. In and out, no pre, during or after surgery issues. Great bedside manor WITH OUT the, unfortunately all too common, "aloof, how dare you ask questions, I'm the doctor here...". I had been suffering with knee pain for about three months to the point where I could not even sit down without being in excruciating pain. I met with Dr. Staples and we did a few test to find out the cause of the pain. He was able to not only diagnose the cause, but was able to also provide me with PRP treatment that next week!!Within a week, I was pain-free and have never had one day of aching pain. I made an appt with Dr Staples 2 weeks following a severe fall ( he was one that I could get into the quickest) and would never recommend him. I was in extreme pain and all we had was an x-ray done at Sutter urgent care when we went in to see him. (Sutter urgent care Dr. (another joke) said everything was fine and sent me home with crutches saying all I had was a strain) When we arrived he showed my husband and I the xray, which did show an avulsion fracture which is caused by the hamstring being torn either some way or all the way off the bone.(which the urgent care Dr had missed) When we asked about getting an MRI to see the extent of the damage he said it was unnecessary due to my age (I'm 60) and said I'd be fine.He took me through two motions and informed me that I did have a tear but wasn't sure of the severity, to get off the crutches, go back to driving/walking and see him in six weeks and we'd go from there. Now mind you..I was in excruciating pain. I couldn't stand, I couldn't sit and was in tears due to the non directive I had from not only from him but also from the Dr at urgent care. Dr Staples just basically fluffed me off. His assistant also told us when she came in to check us out of the appt, when asked again about an MRI, she said he didn't want to do anything unnecessary because I would be exposed to too much radiation. Huh?? An MRI?? My husband and I pushed for an MRI anyways and I called my insurance the day I asked Dr Staples office for one and they immediately approved it saying they were just waiting for the Dr's orders. It took them 2 WEEKS to get the request sent in as I kept checking with my insurance company throughout. After getting the MRI we had made an appt with Dr Purnell (excellent Dr who's compassionate and has a great bedside manner. (**DID NOT make and appt with his PA**)) as I didn't want to go back to Dr Staples.The MRI showed that I have a stage 4 ruptured tendon/avulsion fracture. Not an easy injury to come back from without the proper treatments such as surgery,(we choose not to do because of the shredded hamstring) ,ultrasound, H wave, rest and two treatments of PRP (done in Purnells office). It has now been 4 months and I am so thankful to have found Dr Purnell to help me through this tough journey. Would never recommend Dr Staples, his flippant attitude and lack of care/directive for a patient in the amount of pain I was in. read more

When I eventually had occasion to call on Dr. Staples it was with relatively short notice, he was very accommodating and arranged to have me evaluated the same day.
