If there were six stars, I would give them all to Dr. Charles without hesitation. My first…read moreappointment was the best appointment I've ever had at a Dr.'s office; Dr. Charles has a way of making you feel like her old friend and I felt completely at ease. I had a long list of health questions and possible ailments and she patiently listened to me and took the time to thoughtfully discuss everything I brought up. At one point she even pulled out a physician's encyclopedia-type book and showed me illustrations about a skin condition I've been struggling with. I left feeling empowered and had a newfound respect for medical professionals. After a trip to Belize, I went to urgent care twice and was ultimately hospitalized for a little bug bite on my back. I had half a dozen doctors look at the bite, and every one of them had a different prognosis. When I finally went to Dr. Charles to follow up after the hospital visit, she took one look at my bug bite and immediately knew what the culprit was. I was furious at the other docs that didn't listen when I told them I'd gone to Belize and had numerous mosquito bites. One of them even suggested it was an ingrown hair (highly unlikely and borderline insulting). I was so impressed that Dr. Charles immediately knew I had a botfly and a week later I was healthy, bug-free, and once again awestruck by her knowledge. Last but not least, Dr. Charles always remembers me as if we're good friends, recalling details of my personal life and asking me how I've been since we last met. It's always unnerving to go to the doctor's office... unless Dr. Charles is your doctor.

Dr. Vallejo-Craig was my PCP for a few years until she took an obvious dislike to me during an…read moreoffice visit because I had been on a pain med prescribed and followed by a pain specialist. She told me everyone abuses that medication and that included me. She accused me of exaggerating and lying through the whole visit. I thought she knew me, and understood us to have mutual respect. I discovered later, in reading her note from that visit in my medical record that she lied and misrepresented me, apparently to defend her behavior and prove me to be a drug seeker. She quoted me repeatedly as saying things I have never nor would ever say- including that I demanded pain medication from her, and lied and exaggerated. She documented fake details to make me sound like a typical drug seeker, including indicating that I was irresponsible with self care and health maintenance like dentist visit, physical, mammogram, etc. This was plain ridiculous as I'm scrupulous about regular health care and screening, and my last dental cleaning was the day prior! She went on to write misleading lies about our entire interaction. I've completely lost respect for her as a physician and as a person. I stopped seeing her and spoke to her very kind MA about it a few weeks afterward. She listened and validated me and that helped. However this experience of being accused, lied about and misrepresented in my medical record had a negative effect on my mental health and certainly caused me undue distress. I recorded every detail of this visit and a copy of her notes. I considered reporting her to her Practice Manager and the CO Medical Board, but decided not take the risk of her negatively affecting my relationships and earned respect in this medical community.

The cost is important to me because I am retired and pay cash (no insurance). I paid the amount and while waiting for the doctor, I was asked how I was feeling. I knew about the Depression Screening they like to charge for so I declined the screening. Then I saw Dr. Vallejo-Craig for all of 10 minutes. At the end she asked me if I had any concerns. I mentioned one and she said she would send a prescription. She also gave me a list of blood tests to perform later. To me this should all be part of the physical. While leaving, I asked if there were any other charges and was told 'No'. Then a week later I got notified of a bill for another $176. I called and was told that they must charge me for the Depression Screening even though I declined it. I was also told that they do not know why I received the additional $148 bill but that I must pay it. I have spoken to multiple people and none of them can tell me 1) why I must pay for a Depression Screening that I declined, and 2) why I am being billed the extra $148 for my physical appointment. All they do is say they will send it to be billing department for assessment. However, nothing happens and there is no one that I can talk to in said Billing Department. They say that the bill will go to collections in a few months. I do not know if Dr Vallejo-Craig is part of this problem or if it is Common Spirit's policy to pile on fees without justification or explanation. I wish I had never heard of this office.
