I've been training with Jon for almost a year, and have had a remarkably positive experience. As someone with a naturally skinny build and a fast metabolism, I've always struggled to gain muscle despite years of trying everything from HIIT to traditional weightlifting. Working against my own genetics always felt like an insurmountable challenge. When I started working with Jon, he helped me set realistic goals, put the fear and doubt behind me, and helped me build a plan that actually worked for my body and lifestyle. Sessions with Jon are fun, instructive, intense, and focused. In addition to being a great conversationalist and keeping things light, he is constantly providing clear instruction and pointers on all aspects of the session, from form to breathing to tips for endurance and nutrition. His holistic approach is well rounded and covers all of the bases. Ten months later, I'm proud to say I've gained 11 pounds of muscle, something I never thought possible. My old dress shirts no longer fit (the buttons are about ready to pop out), and I see noticeable muscle growth across my entire body. Beyond the physical results, I've gained a sense of confidence, discipline, and focus that's carried into other areas of my life. Having my partner and friends comment on my improved physique fills me with pride, and the fact that the benefits I've gained with Jon ripple far beyond the gym is a testament to his professionalism and effectiveness. Jon is both highly knowledgeable and genuinely encouraging. He pushes me when I need it, and somehow makes every session fun instead of purely a grind. He's personable, easy to be around, and creates an environment where I feel safe to challenge myself, fail, and try again. I would recommend Jon to absolutely anyone looking for a personal trainer. I can say with the utmost conviction that working with him has been one of the highlights of my year. read more

I have been working with Jon now for 5 weeks. Three of those weeks I have worked with Jon on my own, and two of those weeks my girlfriend joined as well. I cannot recommend working with Jon enough and would like to emphasize three areas that have impressed me the most! First, Jon's more than ten years of experience show in every aspect of our work together. In creating a workout program for me and my girlfriend, Jon carefully listened to our goals and designed a program that would push us towards them. For example, I wanted to increase my upper body strength, get more definition in my arms, and increase my hip mobility. While I was expecting to do bunches of bicep curls, Jon has helped me understand the importance of working your entire body, particularly your lower body, and how doing so can help you build muscle all over. As a result, my workouts these days are varied, so I don't get bored or injured, but always helping push me towards my goals. He even does it without me noticing sometimes--like workouts I didn't know would help with hip flexibility but that have made a tremendous difference in my everyday life. Jon's experience also shows in the way he treats you. I am never "scared" to go workout with Jon. I know he will challenge me and make me lift heavier weights than the week before, and I know that I will leave sweating and exhausted. But, I also know that he is monitoring my progress and that he never wants to push me to a point where it's dangerous or where I am not comfortable. He's great at making adjustments where necessary, for example, sometimes he will give me a little bit longer of a break if I am particularly dying after an exercise. Second, Jon is focused on long term change and development. If you want results (e.g. significant weight loss), Jon can get you there, I'm sure, but I think his strength is that he takes a longer term approach. He doesn't want me to just get stronger and then be done with it. He wants me to understand why we are doing the exercises we are doing and why I should be eating the foods I am. He envisions our work together as creating long term change, which is what I want. Third, is that I actually do feel the difference our workouts and his nutritional guidance is making. I feel stronger and more confident. My shoulders, arms, and chest have grown. And, for the first time in a long time, I feel like I am progressing in my workouts. I used to continue to lift a certain weight longer than I should--mostly because I could do the reps I needed to do at that weight. But Jon picks what weights I do each week, which means I have no choice but to move up. Shockingly, I've kept pace with the increasing weights and am lifting more than I thought I could! It's an amazing boost to your week when you're hitting your goals and when you have someone pushing you and achieving them with you. Jon is excellent at both one-on-one training and at couples training. He is flexible with scheduling and attentive to COVID procedures. If you're looking to make a change, definitely check him out! read more

I have been working with Jon for about 8 months now and it has been nothing but positive! Jon is super kind and understanding while also challenging you, motivating you in a positive and encouraging way. His approach is highly individualized and he is always able to modify exercises based on needs, like injuries, so that they are still effective - something I never had the knowledge to do before. I have seen incredible progress in my body and strength that I didn't know was even possible! Can't recommend Jon enough! read more

I reached out to Jon after the winter holidays to get back into shape after a few months of not really working out or dieting. I was always a fit and active person, but had recently lost a lot of motivation and gained a lot of weight. I was looking for a trainer to help me get back on track with fitness, dieting, and overall health and wellness. After only 6 weeks, I felt like a completely different person - I felt strong, fit, confident, and energized. His meal plan was the most effective and easy-to-follow meal plan I've ever used (I've used TONS in the past), and I'm never starving or feel deprived. I have way more energy, too. He is also very good at educating you on what to eat and when so you feel like you can follow this in "the real world" without being in your own kitchen. In my first few sessions with Jon, he got to know me, where I needed to improve and how to challenge me. His workouts are very EFFECTIVE. You wont need to spend 3 hours in a gym to get amazing results. His athletic background and knowledge of the sport really makes a difference in being a trainer. Jon sets a welcoming environment which I also really appreciate. He's encouraging throughout the workout, and I always feel really accomplished after our sessions. I can't thank Jon enough for the results I've seen in such a short amount of time. read more

I have been training with Jon Hanna for almost a year now (since the end of March '22). I train with him 3-5 days a week with 4 being the average. I came to Jon as an older guy (52) who had some experience with exercise and weightlifting as well as a good bit of education in the exercise science field. Unfortunately, I had not had much success in generating the results I wanted for myself. Jon and I met and talked and went over goals. I outlined what I was looking for and he gave his feedback on what was reasonable. I also let him know I had some nagging and persistent low back and hip problems as well as some shoulder issues. We started up several days later with some basic stuff testing my strength, mobility, balance, flexibility, endurance and cardiorespiratory fitness. What is amusing is I was far less fit than I thought I was, but I know that is pretty common. What also became apparent is I was "skinny fat". So, I looked ok in clothes, but lacked a decent percentage of lean body mass and had a high body fat percentage. So rather than my normal method of calorie deficit and cardio, Jon outlined a plan for more protein, weights, some hard, short cardio with the goal of adding muscle to be more metabolic. From here the baby steps began. Based on my strength and mobility and other fitness indicators Jon put me on a program to first get me moving better and being more mobile while working on strength, conditioning, and learning the basic lifts. It is humbling learning some of these things and realizing how poorly you are performing but Jon makes you feel very at ease. He is understanding and patient and realizes what is reasonable for you. He makes you work hard, but within your limits - all with an awareness of injury prevention and an eye on physical and even facial cues to know when to pull back from something or scale the movement or weight. Over time my movement and mobility got better and strength improved. As time progressed we moved from the beginning program to a more advanced program with bigger/heavier compound movements and barbells. We do things now that there is absolutely no way I could have done at the beginning, and many of my nagging injuries and mobility issues are either gone or have steadily improved. There are also large mental impacts from training with Jon. While I know generally what we will be doing I don't know the details. I know there will be things I like and things I don't like. But I have slowly learned the things I don't like are things that are harder for me and the best way to handle it is just embrace the difficult bits and get better at them. You learn to stop using avoidance as a coping method. Jon teaches you that the way to cope is just grind through it and get better at it. Jon has also helped me learn I can work a lot harder than I thought I could and makes that easier because I have accountability to him when we train, in the same way he has accountability to me to deliver solid programming that is well monitored and safe while delivering enough stimulus for adaptation. He pushes when it's the right time to push and pulls back and gives you some breathing room when it's the right time for that. I honestly could not recommend Jon enough. He is a great trainer, extremely knowledgeable, and fun to train with while still pushing you. The atmosphere is great and most days my training session is the best part of my day. I have a lot of gratitude for what Jon has done for me and what I've learned from him. read more

If you're looking for a personal trainer, your search is over. Jon Hanna will transform your life and put you on a path for long-term physical fitness. I look forward to every workout with Jon because he's genuinely kind and supportive. After every 1:1 training session, I feel nourished both mentally and physically. PERSONAL TRAINING After major life changes professionally and personally in June 2017, I decided to reach out to Jon to see if he can help me reach goals I've been itching to nail for years. It's been almost six months since I started weekly personally training sessions with Jon. Over the last six months, Jon has helped me level up my approach to nutrition and fitness, completely transforming my body and strength. He has an eye for proper form and quality workouts. Even though I've been into fitness for the last few years, Jon has taught me proper form for different workouts/moves which has exponentially increased my strength. STYLE/APPROACH TO TRAINING As a personal trainer, Jon is incredibly warm, kind, empathetic, and supportive. At the same time, he knows how to build a kick-ass workout that leaves you feeling badass (i.e., stronger than when you walked in). He will certainly push you because he truly believes in you and wants you to meet your goals. I've worked with drill sergeant-type trainers in the past who can make you feel guilty, ashamed, confused or even scared. Jon is not that type of person. And yet, his human and client-centered approach, I believe, is more effective than the drill sergeant way. Here's another example of Jon's approach to training: I first met Jon at a small gym where he shined as one of the best group class trainers. He knew how to challenge you while making the working fun. What stood out about Jon was how he cultivated community during the workouts which is the opposite of most group classes where you do your own thing, keep your eyes on the ground, and barely say "hi" to the trainer. In Jon's classes, I always left with a new gym friend. I always compared group trainers to Jon's style--no one else ever lived up. Jon truly cares about creating support environments where everyone (of all fitness levels) feels welcomed and wants to come back. RESULTS After about six months of personal training, Jon has transformed by body in ways that I didn't imagine. After just six or seven weeks of training with Jon, I went for a run for the first time in a long time: I was incredibly surprised to log three miles with ease. I can do a significant amount of push-ups--for fun--in the middle of a work day. I've also recently had the joy of taking certain dresses from the back of my closet out of retirement because I feel comfortable and confident wearing them again. I look forward to continuing my personal training with Jon through 2018 and for the foreseeable future. If you're ready to make huge strides in your fitness journey, reach out to Jon. If you want someone to keep you accountable to your workouts and fitness goals, reach out to Jon. If you want to be your best self AND have fun working out, reach out to Jon. Jon is professional, encouraging, and more importantly, very effective. He knows everything from workout plans to diets and will customize it to your unique needs. Like many people that are not used to exercising, I was very opposed to the idea of working out before, and I never changed my mind no matter how many people suggested me to exercise. I did try different trainers before Jon, and none of them managed to convince me. Jon is the first trainer that made me fundamentally accept working out as part of my life, and if you are like me, you know that's no small feat. Training with Jon is hard but fun at the same time. He makes exercising a joy while pushing you to your limits. No matter if you are a starter or a seasoned athlete, you will be physically challenged. It's also worth noting that Jon is a very nice and friendly person who's easy to connect with. I was a bit nervous before our first session, but he quickly made me loosen up and feel comfortable. If you are looking for a real trainer that can transform not only your body, but also your whole lifestyle and mindset, then Jon is the right person for you. From my past experience, personal trainers are just like everything else, you get what you pay for. With Jon, I guarantee you that every penny you spend will be well worth it. read more

Jon is hands down the best personal trainer that you will find in this city. If you listen to him and follow his advice he will fundamentally change your life as he has changed mine. In our initial consultation he asked me what I wanted to accomplish and then he laid out a plan to help me get there. He helped me improve not only my fitness and mobility but my habits outside of the gym as well. We discussed the things that I wanted to change and he built and implemented the recipe to do so. Jon also cares deeply about those he works with. He makes you feel like family, it is one of his super powers. Jon is a globally ranked CrossFit Athlete which I hope tells you a little more about his commitment to fitness. It is his life's work. He trained his unit while in the Air Force, creating a plan and coaching the group. He currently coaches a top 10 CrossFit Athlete. He is the embodiment of 'practice what you preach'. How often do you go to a gym and see trainers who aren't actually fit themselves? Or whose clients aren't even breaking a sweat? This never made sense to me. Jon is the most physically fit person in any gym and his clients are often working the hardest in the gym, sweating through their shirts with a smile on their face. If you truly want to improve yourself, then this is the person that you want training you. Jon is the person you want training you. Jon is also committed to mental health. You see, it isn't enough that he just train his body and help you train yours. He is committed to improving his mental health and will happily help you if you make it clear that is something you are looking to improve as well. If you are serious and committed to improving, I urge you not to waste any more time. Connect with Jon, and hope that he still has open training slots. read more

I've been training with Jon once a week since May 2016 with a simple goal of improving my languishing squat weight. Jon methodologically worked with me to improve form and mobility, and I now comfortably squat 70 pounds more than I did when I first walked in. Jon is the longest standing trainer I have ever worked with. He is a thoughtful person with a passion for personal fitness - keenly aware of body mechanics and brings his military background to incorporate endurance into every workout. The result? Results. I feel strong and fit, and look it too. If you are looking for someone to push you to build true fitness, look no further tha Jon! read more

As a Doctor of Chiropractic in Oakland I understand not only the importance of a well regimented fitness program, but also the importance of working with someone who knows exactly how the body should function and the correct biomechanics to maximize results with decreasing likelihood of injury. That is why I refer my clients to Jon Hanna! Jon starts every individualized program with an in depth consultation, to understand exactly what your goals are, any possible limitations, as well as how to best connect with you to push you to where you want to be. Not only did Jon lead an entire squadron (if that is the correct terminology) on the Frankfurt Air Force base, he also works with professional athletes and corporate athletes who work primarily at desk jobs. This diversity in knowledge is another reason I love sending my patients to see Jon. If you want someone who really knows what they are doing, I'd highly recommend his services! I reached out to Jon at the end of June with the goal of finding a trainer that would help me get back in shape and lose weight. I hadn't worked out in years, was overweight and wanted (more like needed) the guidance of a trainer to help me achieve my goals, hold me accountable and help motivate me. In just 4 1/2 months of working with Jon, I've truly transformed myself and lost 30 lbs! I don't want to sound like an infomercial, lol, but I've also increased my strength, flexibility and confidence. :) It wasn't easy; it took a lot of hard work and dedication. With Jon's help, I've achieved milestones in my workouts that I never could have imagined I would have the strength to do- I can squat 123 lbs, and I've never lifted weights like that before, it's so rewarding! Jon really cares about his clients all-around health too. From the start, he truly listened to what my needs/wants were, and put together customized workouts for my beginner level and ability. He also provided nutritional advice, which made a big impact on me. And as a novice at working out, I really appreciate the focus Jon has on proper form and technique, so I don't injure myself. Jon has such an uplifting, positive energy that is so infectious! And with his truly genuine and consistent encouragement, he motivates you to push yourself in every workout. And he continues to create variety with every workout, which is huge for me, so I don't get bored! We set goals along the way and its been so satisfying as I reach them and reflect back on where I started. I can't stress enough how amazing Jonathan is to work with! I highly recommend contacting him to get started, you won't regret it! read more

When I was first getting into Crossfit I would just go on to the Main page and do the work out. While this was hard and challenging for myself, I didn't always feel as though I was pushing myself to the limit or even over the limit. I then met John while working out in Ramstein, Germany and from that day on we would do two work outs a day. Even though he was stronger than me he never put me down discouraged me. Always building each other up and giving helpful words of encouragement. The only place where I could keep up was on the rower that sweet sweet death machine. John is always down to help out anyone, but at the same time you have to be willing to push through the pain and not quit on yourself. He is also very good with fixing form or how to set up cues for power cleans, snatches, and also just good ole below parallel squats, get in there nice and deep like. Would recommend John to anyone looking to loose weight, eat clean, run faster, jump higher, and just become a overall better person. read more

I found Jon after connecting on instagram a couple years ago and decided to reach out for personal training in January of 2017. I have been considerably active and at the time, was taking bootcamp classes, spin and doing my own gym workouts 6-7 days a week, but felt like I needed more 1:1 attention. I also wanted a change of scenery as I am based in the Peninsula and getting up to SF once a week (at least) to train was the perfect opportunity. Immediately into our initial consultation, I knew I had found the right trainer for me. Jon instantly understood my needs, goals and it's safe to say we just clicked as trainer/client. He approaches each training session with incredible focus and attention to my needs, as I know he does for each client. As I have transitioned into CrossFit full time, Jon has been instrumental in keeping me safe, mobile and ensuring I am practicing good form. He's also gotten me to challenge myself in areas of CrossFit and fitness overall that I honestly never saw myself doing! Beyond the training, Jon has helped me achieve a solid grip on nutrition in support of my training and lifestyle overall. I was very candid from the start about my long history with eating disorders and being in recovery. While I did not want to focus on weight, I was genuinely seeking help to gain control over my nutrition and furthermore, a sense of freedom from the disordered behaviors and thought process. We started out slow and with small goals, then moved into tracking my macros, which has been life changing. I had such a hard time for so many years believing that eating more would actually lead to my desired results, physically and mentally, but now I truly see and LIVE it. I can attest that eating more calories than I ever have-of good, high quality and balanced foods-has aided me tremendously. I have leaned out while getting consistently stronger and my overall affect is profoundly better. It's safe to say that this has been a life changing experience! I will gladly and highly recommend Jon to anyone in search of a personal trainer. He's knowledgeable, adaptable to each individual's needs and goals and an absolute pleasure to work with. To say I look forward to each training session is a huge understatement. I am extremely grateful for the changes we have made together so far and look forward to continuing to push past barriers, achieve/surpass goals and reap the benefits! read more

I've always been athletic and have had several trainers and gyms over the years. However, working out with Jon has been life changing. Jon has a way of inspiring people to fully commit to showing up to work out, putting in the time in 1:1 sessions or alone, and making positive changes outside of the gym leading to better results. Jon will definitely push you to achieve goals you never even dreamed of. When I first started, I never used anything heavier than 15 lb weights and never touched a barbell. Six months later I can squat 200 lbs and deadlift 215 lbs. Focusing on eating more vegetables, fruits, healthy proteins and increasing water consumption has revolutionized the way I work out and the way I feel throughout the day. I have more energy and sleep better because I'm fueling my body better and challenging my body with difficult workouts. Setting challenging goals and working towards them changes the way we approach all challenges whether physical or mental. Friends and colleagues have noticed my improved attitude and mental toughness. I've never found a work out routine that I've consistently stuck with for long periods of time, because I travel for work and tend to get bored easily. Every workout with Jon has been unique, which keeps me interested and coming back for more. He also sends me workouts I can do while on the road in hotels to maintain my fitness while outside of the gym. I'm definitely addicted to working out for the first time and it's all thanks to Jon's challenging workouts and words of inspiration. read more

I met Jon when I trained at CrossFit C'ville for the summer, and was incredibly impressed by the professionalism and ethos on which he runs his business. His ability to cater to the needs of his clients is truly unsurpassed - he encourages you to push limits and set new personal goals without overwhelming. While his workouts are tough - high intensity and varied (and the results speak for themselves), he dismisses the 'no pain, no gain' mentality and really encourages you to stay in tune with your body/pre-existing injuries to make sure that you are always moving forward in the safest way. Even after a few weeks, I saw great improvements in my injured shoulder. Finally, I have to echo the sentiment that consistently appears in other reviews: Jon walks the walk. He shows up every day and pushes himself and those around him to reach the next level with no ego, and a genuinely caring attitude. If you are looking for an amazing PT, nutrition coach or group classes, look no further! read more

I've been working with Jon for about 3 months now. I started with zero gym experience and at a very poor fitness level, Jon created a program for me to help get my diet in check and establish good form in the gym - both in strength training and cardio. No day is the same and the workouts constantly push me to my max. He is incredibly fun to work with and I look forward to going to each fitness session. It's incredibly helpful to train with someone who is as passionate as Jon is about fitness. Plus he smells nice. read more

Jon Hanna is a solid trainer. He dedicates himself to helping you reach your potential. He instructed me on proper form, as well as proper nutrition. Finding the right workout plan, as well as the right way to eat, is a lot of work. There is too much information to sift through to find the best plan. He makes that process much easier. I definitely recommend Jon Hanna as a trainer. read more

I have been hitting the gym consistently for the past few years and wanted to see what it was like to switch up my workouts and really have a trainer take me to the next level. Jon was referred to me by a friend. One problem I thought, was I live in LA and he lives in the bay area. I ended up contacting Jon anyways to see how it would work and he was amazing from the beginning, asking me what I am looking to do (gain muscle but stay cut), giving me a background of his experience lifting, and how we will make the long distance training work. It's actually really cool, he programmed out a several month program for me and each week he gives me the workouts for the week. He checks up regularly on how the workouts are going and how I felt doing them. He has also given great advice on diet, protein supplementation and when to eat certain types of food for the best results. The long distance training has actually been amazing for me as well in that I get the workouts for the week and can do them on my own time. If I have any questions, I can contact Jon anytime for advice. read more

Since I've started training with Jon (coach) toward the end of Jan 2017, I've learned to find a balance between being present at the moment, while maintaining a goal-oriented futuristic outlook. Coach has taught me how to brush off any hindering factors (i.e. the missed rep or sluggishness from an accidental food splurge) and simply be the best I can be in the moment. With coach's constant support, I am motivated to remain focused and push myself harder each day no matter what obstacle lies in my way. At the same time, I've learned that progress takes time and in order to make those positive gains we all want, it's going to be a long-term fight and commitment. With that, I've realized how far good programming can go and help achieve goals. By bringing that daily focus and sticking with the long-term programming coach provides for me (he writes my program by 6-week cycles catered toward my personal fitness goals), I've been hitting numbers (at least 30lb increase in every single lift) and movements (like handstand walks and snatches) that I never would have imagined myself hitting. All those words to say, I found that I grew immensely as an individual and as an athlete in this past year simply because the coach I happened to stumble across is one who lives with integrity, goes above and beyond, and inspires me to conquer my goals... I don't doubt that he gives the same attention to detail, focus, and positivity to every person he works with, so I'd confidently recommend him to any person no matter what fitness level or goals that person may have. The mentality and discipline he helps you build will make you an overall better person inside and outside the gym. And soon, you'll find yourself conquering that one goal you didn't even want to imagine being possible. read more

I was trying to get myself in shape for employment examination that I found was extremely challenging since I had not worked out in years. Not only that I needed to lose weight and improve my physical ability, I also needed an encouraging, passionate, and enthusiastic trainer who can motivate me. And I am so glad that I met John who did exactly just that. John listened attentively and carefully drafted the appropriate plan that not only helped me met my goals, but also motivated me to keep up with the healthy life. My family and I immediately recognized the changes. I lost 13 lbs of fat in the first two and half weeks and gained a lot more muscles. I now can do 50 push-ups, 40 sit ups, each in 1 minute easily and still can run 1.5 mile within 15 minutes or less, which I do not think I could do seven weeks ago. His inspiring and motivating spirit definitely is a great factor that will help you forget how intense the exercises are and strive for what you want. Most of all, I have learned how to keep up with the healthy lifestyle and stay motivated. I absolutely agree with other reviews on John, five stars is not enough for him. Highly recommend John to everyone. read more
