My wife used to be a John Smith Subs employee way back in the day! Once we moved down to Florida, it was inevitable that we'd be checking this branch out sooner or later. Last week we finally made it in. But it wasn't all that great I'm sorry to say. I love a divey sub spot as much as anyone, but I didn't really get the four or five star vibes here. For our order we got an Italian steak sandwich, a grilled chicken salad and an order of fries. The sandwich was really disappointing. The meat was very off putting. It was way too thick and chewy. Definitely needed to be chopped a bit more, but overall the meat didn't seem to be good quality. I also didn't love the roll, which didn't take like real bread to me. It tasted like a generic supermarket cellophane wrapped roll. Mushy and fake. The salad felt like something you'd get in a high school cafeteria. Basic veg, basic chicken, just completely uninspired. Also, the jalapeños were mush. Really gross. The fries were pretty decent, but I disagree with the claim that they're something amazing. They were just OK. Overall two stars. My wife's nostalgia didn't save the day. This place is definitely below average and not worth a visit.

The fries are still one of the best around as well as the tuna made with Hellman's . Restaurant is cleaner now and seems they're remodeling to electronic menus

So we glad stumbled upon this. Everything was 10/10: the food, the music, the bread, the service, the vibes, and the drinks. I'd give anything for one closer to us in FLL.

Amazing Sub place! The best service and sandwiches around town! I had steak , mushrooms and provolone! Jamie added a little Mayo! so BOMB! My husband got the Philly so good! Fries were perfectly cooked! The cook Lou makes a great sub! I definitely am going back! Jamie and all the staff were fantastic! Service with care of food and a smile

So, Ive come here many times, but have never been compelled to write an actual review. With that being said, Jon Smiths is like no other sub shop, its a revved up, fresh quality, kind small chain. The steak is always hand cut sirloin and the other meats like chicken and even the Tuna is always fresh. The ladies at the counter are always super friendly and everyone works so hard here to make sure everyday is a great experience for their guests. The steak and cheese with onions is a classic and I love getting it. You have the option of adding mayo and its delicious. The steak is juicy and you can tell its marinated fresh daily. Prices are reasonable, a large will cost you around $10 before tax and it fills you up. I love the fries, the oil is changed very often so Ive never had a batch that tasted like old oil. The seating they have is not social distanced but the people that did come in while we were eating were smart enough to sit with space in-between them. Thank you for yet another quick and yummy lunch. (:

Softest bread ever

This place continues to amaze me. How do they stay so unchanged, yet so good? Walking in, it's like going back in time to the 1990s. The wood paneling, the neon, the logo in need of a refresh, the simple decorations... At first, you'd think these are things that could hurt the brand. But no, they MAKE the brand. Simply put, the food here is out of this world. I usually get the Chicken Bomb or Steak Bomb. Both are unreal. The bread is soft, the meat is tender, the cheese is...cheesy. And oh, don't get me started about the fries. When I saw the sign on the window saying they were voted better than McDonald's fries, I snickered. But then when I tried them, I instantly realized how true that is. They really ARE better than any other fries I've had (except maybe Shake Shack's fries). All in all, I hope this place never changes. They represent a simpler time, before all the big chains took over. They know what they're good at, and therefore live by the motto, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Steak bomb no tomatoes extra mushrooms and bacon! Amazing!!

Whenever I head south, it's the very first place I stop--and when I'm driving home, it's the last place I hit before getting back on the road. I even have to bring home a full order for my family, three hours away. I literally drive three hours just to eat Laspada's. That's how good they are. It was one of my favorite places when I lived in South Florida, and after all these years, they're still making the best hoagies I've ever had. Fresh, flavorful, stacked, and totally unmatched. If you know, you know. And if you don't--go. You'll understand immediately.

Laspada had a lit up sign in the window saying they're "open." I seem to recall Next Door Boca giving them decent reviews. I am a native of Philly, hometown of the hoagie. I thought I'd give this place a try. I ran from my car through the rain and tugged on the door....locked. The door hours say open at 11! So much for the lit "open" sign. They have outdoor metal tables and chairs under an awning. I sat at an outdoor table for ten minutes. I looked through the storefront window at a couple employees prepping and I read the wall menu. A guy unlocked the place at 11. I let a young family and several other guys go ahead of me. Guy at the slicing wheel waited on me. I ordered a small Mama Lastrada turkey & salami on wheat. There's about a half dozen employees behind the counter dealing with the assembly line of customers and sandwiches. Guy at the slicing wheel tells me one of the other guys will work on my sandwich. Okay. However, I can't move down the line because there's customers still lined up ahead of me waiting for their food. Slicing wheel guy looks up at me a minute later and asks what he can get for me. I look back at him waiting for him to recognize me from a minute ago when he already had sliced my order. No recognition! I repeated my order to him. Now he remembers me! He again refers me to one of his junior sandwich prep guys. I overheard him telling a busy junior guy, "This is just a small Mama on wheat" or something like that. Still, I can't go down the line because there's guy ahead of me had placed an order for 3 sandwiches. I swear to you that the slicing wheel guy asks me for a THIRD time for my order! By this time, I felt like I was in a Monty Python sketch. I repeated my order. Again, he refers me to a third junior associate (Manny, Moe, and Jack)? Finally, a young associate asked me for toppings. I had noticed two lettuce bins. One bin looked fine. The other looked a little brown. I decided to skip the lettuce rather than ask him to pick from the left hand bin and embarrass them. I also saw a black speck in the onion bin. It probably was nothing but I decided to skip onions just to be safe. I chose tomatoes, Swiss cheese, pickles and sweet peppers. The debit card reader asks if I want to tip. I skipped that. Price was reasonable. Hoagie was okay. The roll was soggy. Philly hoagie shops pride themselves on their rolls. I understand this is Florida, not Philly. I can appreciate this place is popular and busy. However, being asked for my order 3 times by the same experienced worker there left me feeling less than special as a customer.

I get your rules, I respect your rules, but to charge me $6 for a side of mushrooms since you wouldn't put them on half, is outrageous. The waitress was nice enough but didn't seem like she wanted to be bothered with working. My kids are annoying, I get it, but you can still be nice to them. The prices initially caught my attention -- many of the sandwiches run around $20+ -- but the portions and quality start to make sense once you see what comes out of the kitchen. The owner, who hails from Brooklyn, noticed my order and told me I should try something different. He ended up making me an off-menu sandwich called the "Dapper Don." It starts with a toasted baguette brushed with garlic oil, then piled high with house-roasted beef, arugula, caramelized onions, crispy fried onions, herb aioli, and a generous amount of shaved Parmigiano. The flavors are big and well balanced -- peppery greens, rich aioli, sweet onions, and salty cheese tying everything together. The sandwich itself is massive. Easily large enough to split between two people. The shop is bright and modern and feels closer to an Italian paninoteca with Brooklyn-sized portions than a typical South Florida deli. One thing to note: this plaza has historically been a tough location for restaurants due to high rents. But if Generoso can build a loyal following around sandwiches like this, it definitely has a chance.

What Sub - Arthur Avenue on Focaccia

What Sub

(27 reviews)

FIVE STARS. GAS STATION? YES. GAS STATION? ALSO YES…read more Let's get something straight. Some of the best food on earth comes from places that look like you shouldn't trust them. Gas stations. Side streets. Tiny counters with three tables and a refrigerator humming in the corner. I saw WhatSub on Yelp and thought, "Alright. Let's see if the hype survives State Road 7." It didn't just survive. It flexed. I am fully on board with five-star gas station cuisine. In fact, I seek it out. And WhatSub doesn't just play the game -- it competes internationally. This place comes dangerously close to Sandwich Master in Turin, Italy. I'm not exaggerating. And it narrowly beats out Generoso's in Coral Springs, which is not an easy feat. The bread? Legit. The meats? Layered like someone actually respects the architecture of a sandwich. The balance? No soggy mess. No overkill. No amateur hour. And then the cannoli. Freshly piped. Not pre-filled. Not sitting there getting sad and humid. Fresh. Filled to order. Shell still crisp. Ricotta smooth and balanced -- not overly sweet, not grainy, not lazy. Best cannoli I've had in South Florida since Lorenzo's in North Miami Beach. That's not a casual comparison. That's a statement. Now let's talk atmosphere. It's technically in a gas station plaza -- and yet the owners and staff are actually speaking Italian behind the counter. Not performative. Not touristy. Just normal conversation like you accidentally stepped into a deli in Torino. It feels real. So real that I went back the next day. And then again. I am not joking. When I ask myself, "What was my favorite thing?" the answer is dangerous: Everything I ordered. Cold subs. Hot subs. Cannoli. Repeat. This is the kind of place you almost don't want to write about because once the word spreads, lines get longer and secrets disappear. But credit where credit is due. WhatSub is proof that greatness doesn't need chandeliers. Sometimes it just needs good bread, proper technique, and someone who actually cares.

Came here because I saw it was a new Italian sub shop near my area. Saw good reviews and wanted to…read moretry it myself. Behind the counter was a husband/wife duo who were the business owners (didn't get their names) who stated they were from Sicily. After much deliberation, I decided to order the Arthur Ave and the Milano. The Arthur Ave is a cold sandwich that had prosciutto, arugula, stracciatella, sun dried tomato. You have a choice of bread from white, wheat rolls, and focaccia. I was informed by the husband the focaccia is made fresh daily by his wife so of course I had to try that. The wife was nice enough to let me try a sample of the prosciutto and I have to say -- it was delicious, so getting it on a sandwich was going to be a no-brainer. The Milano was for my father. Watching them make the sandwich, they put two huge pieces of chicken cutlet, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and freshly sliced mozzarella. Again, I got the focaccia bread. Both sandwich's were drizzled on the top of the focaccia bread with fresh Italian olive oil which was just the cherry on top. I had told the owners it was my first time and we had a great conversation, that they were nice enough to give me and my parents 3 free mini cannolis -- which was completely unexpected and highly appreciated! As far as the food goes, I don't have enough adjectives in my vocabulary to describe how delicious this sandwich was. From the delicious meats, the fresh veggies, and my personal favorite part -- that focaccia bread. I would buy that alone. They had specials on their menu the day I went that was a not on their menu -- a meatball sub and arancini balls. Also, keep in mind, that this shop is inside the Mobil gas station on 441 and SW 18th. There is a sign on the outside of the gas station, but if you're driving by and unsure of the location, I can confirm it is inside the Mobil. Overall, a great experience; delicious food, great people behind the counter. Only caveat I would say is it is a little bit higher price for a sandwich, but with the current economy where a McDonalds burger is over 10 bucks, you truly get what you pay for and that is top quality, fresh and delicious food. Will definitely be coming back here in the future.

Dining is about more than just the food, and I was surprised that a place promoting its European roots didn't deliver the level of service and hospitality typically associated with that tradition. That said, the food was excellent and the pricing very fair. We had the Chicken Shawarma Hummus Bowl with pita, Chopped Salad, Kebab (the only dish I wasn't wild about), Pesto Burrata Pizza, and Landwer's Famous Schnitzel entrée -- a strong lineup overall. The hummus is nice and velvety, but the short ribs could've used more seasoning and was dry and hard around the edges. The chicken made a better pairing. Service was slow and lacking. We were seated quickly, but it took a while for a waiter to come. After being seated just past 7pm, our appetizer arrived 20+ minutes after ordering, and entrees didn't come until 8pm. Nearby empty tables went unwiped for most of our stay, and it was off-putting to watch staff only partially clean them while handling the tops of salt and pepper shakers with unclean hands. I was not surprised to see health violations listed here afterwards. The experience worsened with dessert. Our Basque cheesecake came with a thick layer of chocolate instead of the berry coulis listed on the menu. When I mentioned the discrepancy so he could inform future guests, the waiter repeatedly suggested I speak to the manager, despite me saying it wasn't necessary. His tone wasn't kind, and it felt dismissive--especially since he had served the dish and could clearly see the difference. We will not be returning nor recommending.
