My first Yelp review of 2013 is for Jon's overstuffed sandwiches in New Haven. I've been working in New Haven for over a year and a half, and I get a sandwich from Jon at least once a week. They are very tasty, my usual is the chicken & cheese w/ mayo. In the Summer, I often order a Kielbasa & kraut, also very delicious. Stopped in with my gf one time before heading to IKEA. She ordered a Philly cheesesteak, said it was "the BEST she's ever had" (and she's originally from New Jersey). You can go to any of the deli in the area and get half the sandwich for double the price. Jon's lunch cart at the corner of Cedar & York is the place to get a good, filling sandwich at a great price. read more

If I had to name my favorite food cart by YNHH, Jon's Lunch would be it. The food is good, the portions are large, the location is great, the service is friendly and efficient, and the prices are reasonable. What more could you want? The convenience of using a credit card to pay? Jon has that covered, too! The item that keeps me coming back is the yaki-soba. It consists of half salad and half noodles cooked in soy sauce. It's quite filling on its own, but if you're in the mood for some meat, you can add that for a buck and some change. I typically get it with chicken, which still technically qualifies as healthy (right?). When eating it, I recommend prioritizing the salad, given that the leaves under the noodles tend to get soggy with time. This is what I order when I'm stuck in the lab for a 12-hour day and I need fuel to make it to a late dinnertime while avoiding hanger (is this a word? If not, it should be!). After my first experience ordering something else at Jon's, I'm rather shocked that I'm giving them my highest possible endorsement among the YNHH food carts, which, I might add, represent some stiff competition. The item that I ordered that failed to impress me on my first visit was the chicken caesar wrap, which is usually on the list of specials. The main reasons for my criticism were that a significant amount of the lettuce leaves were rather soggy and that the shell fell apart towards the end. I'm not sure if this was just an off day, given that I haven't risked trying it again, esp. after I discovered "the yak." Nevertheless, I'm glad I gave Jon's a second chance, given that I wouldn't have discovered my favorite food cart lunch item if I hadn't! While Jon's may not be the most exotic YNHH food cart, they do basic salads and sandwiches as well as Asian fusion (if that's what the yaki-soba qualifies as--I'm not entirely sure...) right. So, if you're nearby and in the mood for a delicious, inexpensive, and filling lunch, there's no reason to look any further than Jon's. read more

This is a real gem amongst the food carts by Yale Medical School. I've been getting the salads for several months but I remembered my phone today to snap a few pics. To give you an idea about how good the salads are: I've been craving this salad all week pretty much for the whole summer. Usually, I crave pizza and desserts but I'd put this up there in the category of must-try food around New Haven. I've yet to try the sandwiches as the other reviewers mentioned but the Chicken Caesar Salad is really great. Jon adds TONS of chicken to it, freshly grated parmesan cheese, croutons, and fresh tomatoes followed by a dab of extra dressing. The salad is a great deal for 6.50$ and Jon seems like a passionate guy. I will note that he is very trusting and says just take your change out of a can of money on good faith. Out of all the fantastic lunch carts on Cedar Street in front of YNHH, Jon's Lunch might be my favorite. The sandwiches are the absolute best I have found in New Haven and they are huge! Although it might be one of the most expensive items on the street ($7..cheap!) one grinder can easily equal three meals. The steak and cheese grinder weighs like ten pounds. It is oozing with steaming shaved beef, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, cheeeesse, on great bread... I finally stopped at Jon's Lunch today on my break. My only disappointment is that I didn't try it earlier! Jon was quick, helpful, and kind. My Yagi Soba was amazing and it gave me enough for a second meal. For $8? You cannot beat that. Although the food was 10/10, my favorite part was Jon himself. He was very trusting and seemed to be making food for those who could not pay. Not many places do that. I will go back to support him and enjoy many more lunches from his cart! read more

One of the best of the YNHH carts. Jon makes some pretty spectacular sandwiches and Caesar salads. His subs are enormous, but you can get halves as well. I typically go with the hot Italian sausage and peppers, but the steak and cheese is a close second. No matter your preference, the meats are all well-seasoned and never dry. The Caesar salads come topped with tomato, freshly grated Parm, and approximately a dump-truck full of chicken/beef/whatever you feel like having. Oh, and that's the half-order. I've never gotten the full order, but I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't even be able to close the container without it exploding under the pressure of inordinate amounts of delicious meat. This is my absolute favorite place to get lunch around YNHH. Not only does Jon make absolutely delicious salads and subs, but his portions are generous, prices are fair, and he is wonderful with customers. He loads up the salads with an incredibly generous helping of meat and fresh veggies, and the subs are huge! I am only in the area visiting family every 6-8 months or so, and I make it a point to stop by and get lunch here during my visit. I crave his salads when I come to town!! Not only is the food great, but he remembers me every single time! He is so personable and I am very impressed that he not only remembers who I am, but what I like to order each time I come back. Fantastic. A great choice of the many YNHH food carts. Had the steak and cheese sub. 7.50 was a bargain. Great flavor, not too greasy. Huge sandwich. Also bought a chicken and cheese wrap to try it out. Again, great flavor and well worth the money. Chicken was fresh cooked and lightly seasoned. I used to like it, until I bought a Caesar Salad from him one day, and there was a small rock in it! I'm not at all joking. I didn't realise until I bit it, thinking it was a crouton on my fork. Normally the idea of a "food truck" wouldn't appetize me ,but in search of something else to eat aside from the questionable cafeteria food at my new job , I wandered over to this one , and I'm glad I did. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover . One of the best steak and cheese sandwhiches I've ever had . You get a lot for what you pay for. Not only is the food delicious , but Jon is an awesome guy . You will never stand there for more than a minute without him acknowledging you , and no matter how long the line gets and how many orders he has he maintains his politeness and friendliness with every customer . as a local and someone who visits this spot frequently, I can honestly say Jon's sandwiches and salads are extremely delicious, filling, and by far the best value when it comes to a quick bite around Yale. Jon is an amazingly dedicated worker who really puts the care and effort into everyone's meal like it was his own. On numerous occasions I've seen Jon go above and beyond when it comes to customer satisfaction.
