We saw this spot while in the area for our 25th anniversary. Checked online and saw pretty decent reviews so we stopped in. Their only options for soda was canned. We ordered the French toast breakfast, menu said $6.59. We were asked how we wanted our eggs cooked, scrambled. While we waited 45 mins for food at 8:45am on Tuesday, with almost no one around... we looked at the would be donut case. It was basically empty except "day olds" bags for $6. We got handed our plates, the eggs were small portions but cooked well. The bacon was almost blackened/burned. We were willing to deal since it was so cheap, until we flipped the bill that was set down when our plates were. "Excuse me ma'am, our bill is $22.37?" "Yep, what's the issue?" "Our food should have been around $15ish" "Yea they charge an egg surcharge, about fifty cent or so" "umm ok, that's still not $5" "oh they charge for eggs in the French toast too" "Why isn't that on the menu?" "Don't need to,It's over there on a sign" *points to the far right side of the diner with a scribbled cardboard piece, among other crap everywhere* "Would have been nice to see that on the menu or be told about it." "Well, don't know what to tell yall" *walks away mumbling under her breath* We understand that the smaller companies had to add charges for stuff esp during Covid and supply issues, but it should be on the menu or posted NOTICEABLY. Also, charging per egg even when used in other items seems excessive. If we had known, we could have picked something else to eat. Once we asked questions, we were completely ignored and another waitress came by asking "yall done yet?" "Ready to pay yet?" This is why small diners are dying. Shady pricing, lack of quality and crap attitudes. We could have went across the street, or down the block to Golden Corral, but we try to support smaller business. Not this one. This is an locally owned diner and donut shoppe. The service is attentive, The food is good, made to order so not fast food but hearty, good value, reasonably priced. Excellent donuts, long johns, bagels, muffins. There is a donut of day for example Saturday is a blueberry cake donut with glaze so not too sweet. They do sell out especially on weekends and you can pre-order. We also enjoy their breakfast, especially home fries, pancakes, waffles and rye toast. They offer corned beef hash too. The decor is definitely diner with booths and stainless steel, we love the decor so 50's mid modern...fond memories of times with our parents, this place stands the test of time ...been around over 50 years....that says something when we lost so many mom and pop places related to covid. This is a great place for donuts, it also has diner food with limited seating inside. The fresh donuts are delicious and are made each morning, so if you have a favorite, be sure to get there early on the weekends (especially Sunday mornings) or they will be picked over. Jolly Donut is a little bit of a dive, and I could tell that before I even stepped inside: The "Jolly Donut" sign outside the building looked like it was designed in 1978 and placed onto the siding shortly after, and hadn't been touched since. But that's great! If you're going to get donuts, you should get donuts from someplace that has character, right? Not a soulless multinational conglomerate? (Not naming names or anything.) Jolly Donut has character. So, this place sells donuts, but it is also a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. We didn't come for the breakfast, just donuts. When I visited, the servers were super busy and short with their words. That's fine -- that kind of added to the charm! But it was kind of stressful because where you order donuts is also where the diners pay for their meals, so everyone was scrunched up at one counter and in everyone else's way. But like any restaurant that has been around for ages, this is how they do it and this is how they like it and this is how they will continue to do it forever. We got some donuts to go (a glazed donut, a custard-filled bar, and a couple others) and couple of cups of black coffee. The coffee was decent, and the donuts were good. You could tell that they were fresh, although I wouldn't say they were the best I've ever had. But I like that they make them in-house! That's always nice. Jolly Donut is about 5-10 minutes driving distance from Cedar Point. It's super close, so there's no reason not to venture outside of the Cedar Point grounds and try some authentic Sandusky baked goods. read more

Food (4.5/5): I ordered 2 pieces of French toast, 2 eggs over easy, 1 piece of sausage, and a side of white toast; it was one of their combos and I added the toast. Everything was prepared as I ordered. The French toast was fantastic and the sausage patty was very tasty. My son ordered a stack of pancakes and really likes them.", very fluffy. Service (3/5): The waitresses were very attentive and made sure that our drinks were consistently full. However, the kitchen was very backed up and our food took around 35-40 minutes. While the restaurant was close to full, there were not people waiting outside and it didn't appear that there were a lot of takeout orders. If this is their "normal" it may not be a place to set something if you're in a hurry. Price (5/5): Our check was around $12, which I found very affordable for two people and at a restaurant around a large attraction - Cedar Point. This wasn't my favorite diner for breakfast food that I've been to, but it certainly wasn't the worst. The food was good, service was solid, and it was hard to beat the price. OK, so this place actually makes their own donuts every day. And, if you are there after, say, 9A.M., your selection of donuts will be limited... The breakfast is very good and reasonably priced. The home-made chili is really delicious! Big chunks of veggies and well seasoned. By lunch time the donuts will be mostly gone, but the burgers and sandwiches are very well made and tasty. So, a 1950s era diner that makes a lot of their own stuff, has good breakfast and is reasonably priced... I like it. P.S. The restrooms are... uh... dated. Small and like what a diner had in 1950... Not good. My cousins and I visited on a Sunday morning to grab breakfast for the family before heading to six flags. We picked out about two dozen donuts after seeing such great reviews on yelp and from a local. The cashier seemed annoyed at our ordering so many and had little patience. We then got into the car and decided to "sample" one to see the hype and it was stale! We tried another flavor and the result was the same! Upset and disappointed we stopped at another donut shop closer to our air BNB which was much better. It was a good morning for the unexpected. I did not expect to find a solid independent diner in a sea of tired chains. I did not expect to find a homemade doughnut bakery either, but I found both in the form of Jolly Donut. You know what else I did not expect? I did not expect to find sausage in my Western omelette! I only glanced at the menu perfunctorily enough to see that they had one and went ahead and ordered it. But when it arrived there were sausage and potatoes inside! What is this strange creation?? Thank Jeebus that at least it had the requisite peppers and onions too. The sausage was a-okay but I still prefer ham. I took three doughnuts to go--chocolate coconut, maple raised, and apples and spice filled--and was pleasantly satisfied with each. Yep, I ate them all today! Had to try this place for breakfast while in Sandusky. They have all the breakfast staples and then some. I got French toast, two eggs, two slices of bacon and a doughnut and coffee. The French toast was great very thick. Bacon quite good. The restaurant is like an old dinner inside. The doughnut was great. Plenty of coffee refills. After enjoying a long Saturday at the park, my friends and I rolled out of bed, packed out stuff and looked for a place to eat breakfast. We drove around a little while and almost decided on grabbing Little Caesars before seeing this place across the street. We crossed the road and walked in to a full restaurant set up like a 50s diner. We stood around for a while before a waitress told us we had to seat ourselves. The menu was very simple and the prices were extremely low. I ended up getting the Western Omelette and picked up a donut on the way out. The omelette was pretty bland. I had to douse it in hot sauce to get a little flavor on it. The slice of cheese on top didn't do anything for me either =/. That said, the sausage inside the omelette was fine, and the toast was good, but really that's all I have to say about that. The donut was good. I ordered the Apple Spice and it did taste just like an apple pie. That said, for a place called the "Jolly Donut" I was expecting better. On another note, this place definitely isn't clean. You seat yourself at tables before any plates have been cleared and if you stare too long at the floors, you may get a little grossed out. But that's probably just the North Shore coming out in me. This is exactly the kind of place you want to find when traveling. On the outside it looks like a cinder block donut takeout (though the signs are pretty amazing) but step inside and it reveals a classic diner, serving breakfast! Decent breakfast, too, with good potatoes and prices that are stuck in the time, several decades ago, when they thought it was a good idea to brick over these beautiful old diners. I wonder what it looked like originally? The tag of the manufacturer is above the door on the inside. One side is donut shop and the other is diner, with a great corner booth under a giant donut photo. Good train car bathrooms, too. A long counter runs the length of the place. Sandusky is a tourist town, but this place is full of regulars. It's kind of a secret spot, hidden in plain sight. read more
