PRICE: $$$ You won't find better ticket deals for Disney than military promo tickets and anyone with a military identification card can purchase 6 tickets at the promo price per year per park --Disneyland/Disneyworld. Paid $319 for 3 day Park Hopper pass for Disneyland. SWAG/AMENITIES: -Event and theme park tickets -Equipment rental STAFF & EXPERIENCE: Had a little wait when we came in, and signed up on the guest list. Once our name was called, we were greeted politely and questioned about our needs. We were informed of the deals on the Disneyland tickets and were able to purchase and secure them right on the spot they told us how to use the tickets. It's not the same as the old days where you just show up with a ticket handed to the person and you're through. I recommend for any military members or dependence trying to get tickets for Disney or universal. read more

This is a beautiful well-maintained fully operational military base. A lot of the bigger bases where multiple missions are assigned have become "joint bases" meaning no longer single service. For example, Hickam - Air Force and Pearl Harbor next door - Navy. As you enter those areas you still get the sense of Navy or Air Force (Army also included at other installations) but they are considered Joint now with missions that overlap (Marines in there too at some locations). It's a way to consolidate some common services and save the taxpayers some dollars (at least in theory). So anyway, this is a great assignment for many with everything right on base from living (housing), shopping (Exchange and commissary) and recreation. There's also lodging for visitors if you can get it. The stay will be a lot less expensive than in Honolulu proper. Even if you are staying off-base, it's worth a visit to check things out. read more

This one-star review has nothing to do with the base itself and I'm sure that it lives up to its average of 4.7 stars. This one-star review has everything to do with an extremely negative interaction I had with one of the guards at the Nimitz entrance. The incident took place this year on February 10th at around 3:30-4:30 PM. I was actually approached by two guards. The one to my left barely said a word but his yappy, fake tough guy little pal to my right is the one you can thank for this one-star review. I understand that he has a very important job but there is a massive difference between someone "just doing their job" and someone being a "creepy, power-tripping coward". He was unreasonably hostile and condescending towards me even after I had made it known that I was being completely and utterly compliant with him. It was like trying to have an intelligent, mature discussion with a bratty, petulant child. For all I know, this type of behavior might be condoned by the base but if it isn't, the base might want to reconsider who they have representing them at their gates. read more

Picking up DBIDs ID card today was a breeze. No line and wait is only for a few minutes, five minutes tops!

For the past 20 plus years, we've had the privilege to access this Air Force Base for business and leisure. We've seen how certain events have changed access eligibility requirements and the upgrading of many facilities. There are several historic buildings and structures dating back to pre-WWII. Some of these buildings have been featured in movies. This Base is huge and is a city in itself..it has its own zip code. Of course, this is a working and fully functioning Air Force Base that services cargo transports, fighter jets, high-profile political aircraft and auxiliary services. There are several communities of town houses that are supported by health services, grocery stores (Commissary) and shopping. Entertainment or recreational activities include theaters, restaurants, dance and dining clubhouses, bowling alleys, tennis courts, beaches and golf courses. I've known some Air Force residents who hardly leave or wander off base out into the Honolulu! Everything is well-maintained and clean. There is pride in community, family and workplace. read more

As a joint base, there's the Pearl Harbor base and the Hickam base. Must be military or DOD to gain access with CAC card. In addition, military or DOD can allow guests on base. The Pearl Harbor side has a pavilion with 2 sand courts, which is near McDonald on base. The pavilion has shade with tables and chairs with bathroom, outdoor shower (warm water), water fountain (cold water), and a hose to hose yourself or the sand courts. The net is already up on the two sand courts. Also if you want a ref, the court has ref stand to either help in coaching or having a referee. Parking is really close to the sand courts and it is fun to use. The Hickam side has a beach which is in Mamala Bay, which is a beach area with a lifeguard. There's barely any waves and you'll see about 50+ people there on a weekend. Great location to relax, sun bathe, go in the water, hang out with friends as a few things to do at Mamala Bay. Check out "The Lanai" restaurant as they have happy hour items (food and drinks) The base has so many things to do. read more

This base is absolutely beautiful! It's located literally down the road from the Honolulu National Airport. Like every base it has its own community and the base housing is so nice. They're a bit close together, but they are very nice inside and the backyards are all kind of connected which makes it easier for families to come together. There's also shopping and entertainment on base so you don't have to go far if you don't want to. It has a used car lot on it where people who are moving soon, about to go on deployment, or simply want to sell their car. There's a good chance that you can make a good find there. My friend said a guy was selling one of the jeeps that was used in Jurassic park on that lot right before we got there. You can also come here to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. I suggest making reservations in advance because you may not be able to get in on the same day, and the wait to see whether or not you are able to could take hours. read more

Once separated as Hickam Field/Hickam Air Force Base and Pearl Harbor Naval Station, merged in 2010 to what we know as Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. These bases are loaded with history. Buildings dating back to the early 1900's and through the second World War still stand, some of which are still standing and used. This is also the home of the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard which was established in 1908. The most visited landmark at Joint Base is the Arizona Memorial which lies just off Ford island. Approximately 1,102 men are entombed on the memorial. This is a stark reminder that led the US into World War II. Directly behind it is the USS MISSOURI Memorial. The platform that saw The Empire of Japan surrender ending WWII. The base itself is listed in the US National Register of Historic Places and also in the US National Historic Landmark District. If you ever get the chance to get on the base to tour or see an event, DO IT and see what this iconic place has. A lot of history in this base. Learn it and live it. read more

Are you a military retiree turning 65 soon? Then you'll need to get a new ID card. If you're like me, I thought the ID card I had said "INDEF", but the back of the ID card has an expiration date that is the last day of the month before your 65th birthday month. You can make an ID appointment online or walk-in but may have to wait awhile. The first open date I found was too late, after my 65th birthday. I didn't want my ID confiscated at the Main gate. So, drove to Hickam's consolidated finance, personnel, and privacy offices. They're located in the repurposed historical Hanger #2, Bldg. 2060. Enter from the mauka side. As you enter, the base gas station and skateboard building will be behind you. If you enter from the makai side, be prepared to walk through a hallway maze that appears to take forever to get to the other side of the building. Sign-in at the personnel office computer. After a few minutes my name was called, answered a few questions, and was told to wait for the next available clerk. A few minutes later, she (I didn't catch her name) called my name and I was on my way to getting a new ID card. The process was easy. She provided outstanding customer service, knowledgeable, personable, and efficient. You'll need your driver's license and military ID. And I discovered my new ID card also doubles as my Tricare-for-Life ID card. Showed my Medicare card and she verified I had Parts A and B. I don't know what happens if you don't have Part B, assume you don't get an ID card. Anyway, just wanted to thank the people at the Hickam personnel office for taking great care of this walk-in retiree. read more

A beautiful Air Force Base. So much history during WWII, if you look for it you can easily spot the bullet strafings from the attack. The commands have taken the time to protect these historical reminders. You must have a military ID to access the post. It is secure because of the joint bases and aircraft wings. read more

After living on Hickam (now JBPHH) for almost 3 years, I figure I could review it. My review is based only on the Hickam side of JBPHH - the Navy side is awesome too, but I don't know a lot about it other than that it has some different fast food places and an awesome pool. If you're looking to live on base, it ranges from okay to very nice depending on which home they offer you. They have historic homes, old homes, renovated homes, and new homes. Parking ranges from not-very-convenient to fantastic, again, depending on the type/location of the home. Maintenance is generally great - I go to the office instead of call most of the time though, because it's just easier for everyone that way. PS - it's Hawaii. You're going to have bugs or geckos in your house at some point. The Commissary has a NO GUEST policy that is very strictly enforced, so if you have non-mil family/friends out to visit, you've been warned: they will not be permitted to enter. Since they put this policy in place, however, they suddenly stopped running out of milk, bread, eggs, etc., so it's for good reason. The BX/BXtra sells all the stuff you may [or may not!] need and there are some vendors outdoors that also sell souvenir-y merchandise. The Shoppette on Kuntz Ave. is open 24 hours and is also the Class 6 (alcohol sales). Places to eat - there's a food court between the BX/BXtra that has a Charley's Subs, Subway, Anthony's Pizza, Popeyes, Baskin Robbins (that sells Starbucks coffee), and Frank's Hot Dogs. On the other side of the parking lot there's a Burger King, and on the other side of the base at the Shoppette, there is another Subway and also a Domino's Pizza that delivers. JR Rockers, next to the Enlisted Club, is a decent sit-down restaurant, and across from that is the Par 3 Golf Course. The Puka is the golf-course bar, and there's a little Mexican take-out place next to the Puka to grab food at while you're drinking. (Both of those are great, btw.) There's a great base library with computers for getting online if you need to, a Bowling Alley that serves food & beer, a great gym with a pool, another pool with tennis courts, a Firestone to get your car fixed at, and an Auto Hobby Shop where you can get it fixed for cheaper than Firestone, or fix it yourself. The base itself is just beautiful. I know that I'm spoiled for the rest of our time in the military! The grounds are well kept [most of the time] and honestly I don't *have* to go off base for anything. Everything I need - including a little bit of fun - is all on base! read more

Great low key spot. If you can get on base...I highly recommend this theatre for movies. I thought that it was going to be cheesy but I was wrong. The seats are comfy and you would never think that you were at a theatre on base. There isn't much to the snack bar...so I recommend that you eat before you go. However, for $4 this is a steal. read more

I have only been to a handful of bases, mostly on this island. Pearl Harbor-Hickam is one of my favorite installations. I love that they have shuttles to take you all over the installation and to the exterior exchange. I love that there are restaurants all over the installation that are unique to the island. Fatburger? here on Pearl. Sam Choy's? Here on Hickam. The gyms are the best military gyms on the island. They have two commissaries! You really can't beat that. I love that the majority of their housing is off base. It really streamlines the traffic at the gate for working hours. Almost like every installation on the island, the history holds true here. If you have base access, it is worth driving over onto Ford Island and enjoying your journey back in time. read more

The USS Arizona display is really quite amazing as well as the museum before you go on the boat to the sunken ship. Seeing the enormous ship sunken and everyone standing above it gives somewhat an eerie feeling for those lives lost here but nonetheless a very touching tribute! read more

I live nowhere near here and I find myself here at least once a week. Great gym facilities. I frequent the group activities like yoga and zumba. Awesome instructors and less than 5 bucks! The residential area is nice and sometimes I wish I lived there instead of renting a townhouse in Waipio. They have a great arts & crafts store near the barracks. I don't think many people know about it, but the prices are definitely better than Ben Franklin's or Craft Supply. They also have some hard to find stuff, like ATG guns and refills. GREAT paper selection too. There is also SUPER SIZED mini marts that feel like grocery stores. I buy all of my alcohol for home at these mini marts because there is a big selection and I like to try new things. They also carry every single flavor of Greenies cat treats known to man...err... cat. Pretty random, but most definitely appreciated by my kitty! read more

I was fortunate to come to Pearl Harbor twice and experience this beautiful part of history that affected so many families. It brought tears to my eyes. I was deeply moved by knowledge I received after leaving this place. For the tourist, you must arrive early, and I mean like 6am! Otherwise, you will be waiting to get in a long, long line. 8/22/10: Crashed out here for the day chasing a little ball at the Mamala Bay Golf Course. Nestled between the air force base and Honolulu international airport, this was probably the loudest 18 holes that I've played. Let's see, we had a UA 777 fly overhead, a few interisland HA 717's, other international 747's and, last but not least, a couple of F22 raptors out for test flights. Awesome. During the drive in, someone pointed out 50 cal bullet holes/damage in several base buildings. Hard to believe that this place was under siege by the japanese 50 years ago. read more

Was on vacation (I'm Air Force) & decided to come down to the ITT office. Down here it's called Morale, Welfare & Recreation. Any-who, the ladies behind the counter were so professional & attentive & they basically are the reason why I'm writing this review. They were able to help me out in choosing which luau to go to & what other activities I should do & see before I leave. Also, gas here is cheap! It's always cheap on any base. I was able to refill the gas tank in my rental car here before I dropped it off back at the airport. read more

I come here for volleyball and basketball games. so pretty much early mornings. when there are games.. most likely Saturdays.. the parking lot in front of the gym is packed! and the parking in the front row is all rate!! usually.. I just park on the parking lot closer to the roundabout.. guarantee you'll find a parking spot.. even though it's a little further walk. this gym is hot! super muggy!! and the lighting is pretty dim. there a two big big fans.. but that's not enough for this gym. they leave the doors open for extra ventilation. when you first walk in.. coming in from the parking lot.. on the right hand side is where the 'audience/parents/spectators' sit and on the left side is where the team sits at. this gym is old.. which means slippery/dusty floors. my basketball kids complained about skidding while they would play defense. and my volleyball kids noted they couldn't dive cause their knee pads wouldn't slide. haha.. so maybe the gym has some off days. note: volleyball kids played earlier in the morning 9/10am while my basketball kids played later in the afternoon at 2/4pm. if you pass the stands where the parents sit.. you take a right and go through the door.. there's gonna be a hallway. that hallway is nice! because it has ac. haha and comfy couches to sit on. over there is also the changing rooms and restrooms. as a coach.. by the end of a game.. I'm drenched in sweat. haha.. and all I do is pace back and forth occasionally.. do the occasion coach squat here and there. and these games don't last longer than an hour. haha. of course.. you can't have food/drinks inside. only water. when you go here to this gym. expect it to be hot. and muggy. especially if it's later in the day when the sun is fully out. read more

OFFICER'S CLUB Event #1. Military holiday party held indoors for 100 @ night. A buffet was set up outside the banquet room with a traditional turkey dinner spread. The interior was rather drab with dated tables/chairs and reminding me of a restaurant scene from an 80s sitcom. A small dance floor, angled awkwardly in the middle of the room provided refuge from a sad, sad party. The only saving grace was the bar across the hall. Event #2. My sister's wedding reception held outdoors, for 500 in the early evening. Also buffet style, they prepped a similar meal--roast beef, ham, chicken, fish, with an assortment of sides from mac salad, green salad, potato salad & jello. Great views of the water, additional tables set up outside the main dining area with front and rear bars open. The staff were really helpful serving and clearing plates. We had full use of a stage area for the 12 couples that served as the bridal party. Definitely recommend the outdoor venue for the ambiance from early evening through the night!!! read more

This place could use a remodel and updated cardio equipment. This gym is pretty small so it gets paaaacckkkeeed around 5-6am and 4-6pm . I would recommend avoiding going at these times... unless you want to wait to use each machine or work in with other people. I don't know if this is just my personal experience or its a pattern, but the guys that work out there would always stare me down.. Kind of awks. Love that planet smoothie is right outside The door of the gym! Planet smoothie is great.. You should try it read more

My first visit to Hawaii was pulling into Honolulu Harbor on my first US Navy ship in 1989. We manned the rails in honor of those who gave their lives on DEC 7th 1941. It is a very moving experience that unfortunately you can only get pulling in on a US Navy warship. Passing by those who paved the way for you is an incredible experience. Knowing your floating by hero's who put their own lives aside to save their shipmates can bring even the harden sailor to tears. I had the pleasure of pulling into Peal Harbor 6 times. I have visited the Arizona and it doesn't come close to the 6 experiences I had passing by my fallen brothers. Since retiring from the Navy I have had the honor of serving as a contractor for the Navy since 2008. I have been doing work on the Joint Base since 2009. The Joint Base is full of history form the Air Force side to the Navy side. No matter where you are on the base they embrace the history that embodies the hollowed ground. As a former sailor a stop in Hawaii was the final stop on deployment before returning to San Diego. It was one of the highlights of the deployment. The base is set up to make those who serve at sea feel at home. They have the NEX close to the ship piers and on the Sub side have a small NEX for them to shop at making it convenient for them also. The Air Force has a really nice beach area and the views are stunning as the water is so blue. Due to size and mission the conveniences are not that of the Navy side. They do have a fairly large AFEES shopping area and small commissary which is nice for the folks assigned to that side of the Joint Base. To those who have the honor and privilege of visiting the Joint Base enjoy the deep history that lays before you. From Ford Island, Pearl side and Hickam side history is a all round you. From the bullet holes from the Japanese fighters that the don't hide mainly seen on the Hickam side to the newly remolded Air Control tower on Ford Island. I have been on every Navy base in the World and none of them come close to the historical value as the Joint Base. The next closest base in the small Navy base for the USS Constitution. I look forward to my next visit to Hawaii and to a visit to the Joint Base. I love the rich history and the amazing thoughts that go through your mind as you imagine what those sailors and airman went through on the fateful day. read more

I was once accidently driving in the wrong direction. I ended driving into the Hickham military base. I talked to the first guard saying that I was in the wrong direction. Then the first guard told me to pull up to the next guard and he will direct me to the detour. So went up to next guard as I was directed to. As I was driving up to the next guard. The guard was trying to explain to me first what to do. I had a glimpse of what to do when your just trying to turn around from a wrong turn. For some reason, that guard that kept telling to turn right when I kind of knew turn left on the cones that was provided for drivers to turn around in that lane. I know it's been safety for the military and anyone that's crossing in but the guard really made mistake of saying to "turn right" when the cones were lined for me to turn left around to the main road. I felt a little offended an taunted at negatively. But he told to just get my ID out and give it to him. It was a pain in the ass for me to do so but I got out perfectly with his direction. But that incident with that guard say to turn right was totally not my fault. I'm trying to complain about anything negative, but that guard really wasn't aware what he said to me. I didn't get his name on uniform. At least I got out just fine. read more

Hickam is one of the best places to be stationed at! The people are friendly, its not too crowded, and there is a beach!

This is my boyfriends base since he is from HI so I can't say bad things about it =P J/K. But seriously, this was the first base that I've been to and I think it's really beautiful. What a gorgeous base!! I don't really know it from a tourist point of view, but just walking around, or driving the base is so nice, breezy and easy. The BOQ is amazing compared to many of the other bases and there is nothing like the tropical breeze and palm trees. SO blessed to live here! read more
