Uh, which way do I go?
Lyla D.

For the past 20 plus years, we've had the privilege to access this Air Force Base for business and leisure. We've seen how certain events have changed access eligibility requirements and the upgrading of many facilities. There are several historic buildings and structures dating back to pre-WWII. Some of these buildings have been featured in movies. This Base is huge and is a city in itself..it has its own zip code. Of course, this is a working and fully functioning Air Force Base that services cargo transports, fighter jets, high-profile political aircraft and auxiliary services. There are several communities of town houses that are supported by health services, grocery stores (Commissary) and shopping. Entertainment or recreational activities include theaters, restaurants, dance and dining clubhouses, bowling alleys, tennis courts, beaches and golf courses. I've known some Air Force residents who hardly leave or wander off base out into the Honolulu! Everything is well-maintained and clean. There is pride in community, family and workplace.

As a joint base, there's the Pearl Harbor base and the Hickam base. Must be military or DOD to gain access with CAC card. In addition, military or DOD can allow guests on base. The Pearl Harbor side has a pavilion with 2 sand courts, which is near McDonald on base. The pavilion has shade with tables and chairs with bathroom, outdoor shower (warm water), water fountain (cold water), and a hose to hose yourself or the sand courts. The net is already up on the two sand courts. Also if you want a ref, the court has ref stand to either help in coaching or having a referee. Parking is really close to the sand courts and it is fun to use. The Hickam side has a beach which is in Mamala Bay, which is a beach area with a lifeguard. There's barely any waves and you'll see about 50+ people there on a weekend. Great location to relax, sun bathe, go in the water, hang out with friends as a few things to do at Mamala Bay. Check out "The Lanai" restaurant as they have happy hour items (food and drinks) The base has so many things to do.

This base is absolutely beautiful! It's located literally down the road from the Honolulu National Airport. Like every base it has its own community and the base housing is so nice. They're a bit close together, but they are very nice inside and the backyards are all kind of connected which makes it easier for families to come together. There's also shopping and entertainment on base so you don't have to go far if you don't want to. It has a used car lot on it where people who are moving soon, about to go on deployment, or simply want to sell their car. There's a good chance that you can make a good find there. My friend said a guy was selling one of the jeeps that was used in Jurassic park on that lot right before we got there. You can also come here to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. I suggest making reservations in advance because you may not be able to get in on the same day, and the wait to see whether or not you are able to could take hours.

Hickam is one of the best places to be stationed at! The people are friendly, its not too crowded, and there is a beach!

Great place for a party…read more This is a spacious and beautiful location on the AF side of the base. The facility has a full fridge and working deep sink. There are a couple or outlets if you want to bring a radio or rice cooker ;) And you can't have rice without having some kind of meat. There's two stationary grills on property. The trash is taken out by management when you turn the keys back in and pick up your deposit. I believe the deposit is $250. There are bathrooms in the back. No porta potties thank God. No real flying creatures to stanch your food and plenty of fresh air. You will get the occasional roar of a plane engine since the runway is close by and sometimes you see a naval ship just off the coast heading out or doing maneuvers. Overall five stars. The scenery is beautiful and he can't beat the price. M

Foster Point Peninsula on Hickam AFB is the absolute worst place for a picnic lunch! Please don't…read morego there. It is so ugly! It is surrounded on three sides by pristine azure waters... YUCK! You can see the skyline of Honolulu and the silhouette of Diamond Head... so horrific! Nearby sail boats gently rock to small waves on the aforementioned pristine azure waters... you do not want to see this! There is no comfortable place to sit and eat. There are only maybe a dozen clean tables from which to choose: some in the shade, some in the sun, and some are under a pavilion to use in the unlikely event it rains during your picnic... Don't take the chance! Today during lunch (well, for the first few minutes) I had to share the peninsula with one other picnicker. Sure he was like 40 yards away, but you shouldn't have to put up with this! And the wind! Today it was so blustery that it threatened to blow my napkin off the table... not once, but TWICE! Oh and it is so noisy... did I mention the sail boats and the waves? Well, they're not silent, ya know! They make this monotonous "lap-lap-lap" sound that might drive you crazy! And you'd be dining only a couple miles from the airport. So as you watch the lumbering jets lift off gracefully into the sky, you can actually hear them. .. It's horrendous! It so far out of the way! It takes minutes and minutes (maybe as many as five) to drive out there from the base proper.... Don't waste your valuable time! So in short, take my advice: Do not put up with ugliness, then uncomfortable conditions, the noisiness, and the long long ride out to Foster Point Peninsula for a picnic lunch! It's just not worth it. But if you do, you'll likely see me there enjoying my picnic lunch; and if you do, feel free to wave. But try to keep your 40 yards separation! ;-)

If you're into historical locations, this is a place to visit on island…read more Parking - $7 in their lots but if you go down just past them, there is a free lot. Bag policy - leave your bags in the car or home. You cannot enter with anything bigger than a small wallet. They will make you check it and pay. Better to not bring at all. Very strict. Tickets - Pearl Harbor itself to enter is free. You cannot pay $1 online to prebook the USS Arizona memorial boat tour in advance or just sign up as soon as you get there and it's free. Each time I've just done the latter and it usually gets me on the boat within an hour. They seem to always have standby but I've only gone in the afternoon. The tickets for everything else, you should look online in advance to include the bowfin and battleship. Those you should book online. Time - if you're not doing any paid additional tours, I would recommend 2-3 hours. There are 2 smaller museum areas to walk through, a walking path outside along the water, a 20+ minute video and the boat tour. You can definitely pair this visit with other activities throughout your day Food - there is a snack shop inside. Bathrooms - at least 2 available on each end Staff - some of the park rangers could be nicer. I've been a few times and one of them, they seemed on a grumpy or angry side. Not because anyone was doing anything they shouldn't be, that's just the way their attitude was but it could have just been a bad day. The memorial is open 7am to 5pm.

If you're on vacation and your looking to do an activity with history. This is it!…read more BEFORE YOUR VISIT: They have a very strict bag policy. They don't allow purses, backpacks, diaper bags, or even Lululemon fanny packs. If you're planning on visiting, make sure you bring a clear tote bag, (any size )the most important thing is that it is clear. If you try to go through the front gate with any type of bag, they will have you check it in at the next building for a cost of $7 Overall, this is a museum dedicated to Pearl Harbor. A day that will live in Infamy. They have historic walk through's of Pearl Harbor from back in the 1940's, an attack experience where you can see the history of the tension and ties between U.S and Japan. -they have a cinema experience, which is a 20 minute video of the overall history of December 7, 1941 -they have the submarine experience which is an additional cost. -they have the USS ARIZONA experience as well. You get to go on a boat and visit the physical memorial. This place is treated like a cemetery. They have expectations of your behavior and conduct while you're visiting the site You will be briefed before you board a boat, two Navy service members will drive you over to the site you get 15 mins on this site. Please be respectful when you're taking pictures or videos. There is no loud noise permitted while on the memorial. Overall, you can visit the site on your own without a tour guide. The cost of parking is $7 Admission is separate. For each historical site there is a fee for admission. I do recommend you check out the national memorial website you can get a package deal there. Or you can get on a tour bus and experience at least three of the museums were like $60 But if you want to take your time, and visit every single site at your own pace, you're probably gonna want to book through the national Memorial webpage where they have lunch meal bundles along with shuttle transportation, and a $10 gift card for the gift shop OVERALL: this is a special place. The ambience is quiet and respectable. It was a different kind of experience because there's a lot of reflection and history. Not a lot of noise. Lots of education. But a great site to visit.
