AWARENESS:
I had not seen Hawaii (Oahu) since I separated from the Navy in 1992. Back then, I actually hated doing anything or going anywhere near the Naval base(s). That changed last year when my wife and I booked a cruise solely focused on the Hawaiian islands.
NARRATIVE:
My wife and I arrived four days before our cruise to spend some time with our middle son who's, submarine was in port and docked at Joint Base Pearl Harbor.
After settling in the hotel, we headed to pick the boy up from his base. Needless to say, lots changed in 29 years but, I digress. After picking up the boy, we decided to drive to Ford Island, driving they're over its new bridge (new to me), the Admiral Bernard Chick Clarey Bridge.
Once on the island, we toured several spots including: the USS Utah memorial, the backside of the USS Arizona memorial, the Battleship USS Missouri and several of the old aircraft hangers.
SCENE:
Ford Island is located in the Pearl Harbor, Loch area of Oahu. The island is still owned and occupied by the US Navy and other Department of Defense agencies such as the NOAA. Access to the base is granted to active, reserve, retired, disabled veterans and DOD civilian personnel. One other way to access this island is being part of a tour group to the USS Missouri but, it has limitations. You will not be allowed to freely walk about the island. You'll have to stay with your tour group / bus.
RECOMMENDATION(S):
Ford Island changed since I was last there in 1992. Access to the island use to be by ferry only. Now, they have a new bridge to get you there.
If you have the means, I highly recommend seeing this island for yourself so, you can take a leap back in time and see up close and though your own eyes what many saw on December 7, 1941 from Ford Island and Battleship Row. read more
