I can't help but wonder if the thousands of folks who drive Likelike everyday, really appreciate the scenery. After leaving the houses in Kalihi and heading to the Windward side, one is treated to tall trees and dense vegetation alongside the roads. It's hard to believe many years ago, all of this island looked like this. There are several features that are interesting to notice. First, the Burmeister Overpass, located about 2 miles from the Wilson tunnel deep in Kalihi Valley, this was built to provide the Burmeister with a means to access their house on the far side of Likelike in exchange for allowing the County to build on their property. Since it's a privately owned bridge, you rarely see cars on it. Second, the Nuuanu Reservoir, located about a mile from the Wilson Tunnel, it is a holding area for water that is treated and distributed throughout Kalihi and Nuuanu. Cars parked on the side, are usually folks who are going to swim in the reservoir (which by the way, is illegal). Once a year, the Board of Water Supply hosts a "catch and release" fishing contest in the reservoir to get an idea of what fish are living in the reservoir. When you drive to or from the Wilson Tunnel on Likelike at night, it pays to be cautious. Not because of spooks (I'm sure there's a few of those) but once in a while wild pigs will appear on the road. So next time you drive down the Likelike Highway, keep your eyes open and you may see something interesting! read more
