First timer for us but our friends and family have been numerous times. I believe it parts of a hotel. Restaurant alone is quite beautiful. Perfectly decorated with a nice modern vibe. Bar area fully stocked with whatever you desire. There's also a floral wall outside for all you IG needs. Service was good when we arrived. Reservation maybe required as most places seemed to always be booked and full. There was tables available when we arrived but it did filled up as dinner went. Menu wise, plenty to choose from. As well as the drink menu. Didn't go to crazy this time as I was only craving a salad. We did share some mussels between the table. Everyone meals did all look amazing. Service was good with our waitress. Everyone who was working all was quite friendly and attentive. Downfall, they don't know anything or heard of Yelp. Even though they have a page. We showed the waitress the Yelp page when we checked in for the 10 percent off food. She seemed ok with then until a manager came over to look at it. She didn't know or heard anything about it as well. Even showed her the page, asked her if this was the right location with address. She agreed. Then she went to ask someone else, assumably someone higher. They didn't offer the discount. Don't know what the deal was, but no one knew what it was all about. Why have a Yelp page for your business with reviews and an offer when check in and not honor it.

For the price (at around £70 a night, which I booked online), The Hudson Hotel is actually a…read moresolidly good deal. It's a bit of a hit-or-miss place to stay across the board, but considering it's roughly half the cost of other similar modernised hotels in New Town, it's worth a go. My initial reservations skyrocketed as I showed up for check-in and had to wait a seemingly interminable length of time. With three employees in the lobby and three computer terminals, you'd think that three parties could be helped at a time, but you'd be wrong. Perhaps one of the ladies was a trainee and one a manager that had more important matters at hand, but only one of the hotel staff was handling check-ins... which apparently took the party ahead of me a good solid ten or so minutes to sort. Once past that, my stay was smooth sailing. There's free and decent (though not terribly high-speed) wireless internet throughout the property. My room was as expected for a European hotel. In fact, it quite reminded me of my stays in Rome, with basic single beds, barely enough room to walk around them, and a modest, but serviceable toilet. Toiletries featured products from The Tub, which I've encountered at various other lodgings throughout the country. I always like it when there are large containers meant to be refilled, rather than little individually packaged ones - it seems so much more efficient to me. And conveniently, there's a bar/restaurant attached to the hotel. Whilst pressed for time, I had a decent and affordable lunch there before dashing off to meetings. And the food wasn't half bad, either. As you can tell from my general descriptions, I feel a lukewarm toward The Hudson Hotel. I'd willingly stay here again, but I'd double-check some other establishments in the area for comparable prices before caving into making a booking here.

I was booked up so solidly during that time -- mostly for the book fair but with some Fringe events as well -- that I sat down in a restaurant only once during my stay. I knew in advance that having a kitchen would be helpful but couldn't have guessed just how helpful. The location of the hotel is incomparable -- I walked everywhere with ease, and the street was quiet no matter how busy Grassmarket or Southbridge were. Just a short walk home to peace. There are Sainsburys every few blocks so you can pick up food easily, and don't miss Nando's for takeaway or dine in. The Edinburgh farmers market is just a couple of blocks from the hotel -- another reason to stay in one of the apartments if you'll be staying more than a few days. The bed was comfortable and the linens were high quality. Housekeeping was completely unobtrusive and thorough. All staff seemed to be as delighted to be there as I was. The bathroom was huge -- mine did not have a tub, but the walk in shower was luxurious and the toiletries smelled like heaven. The bath towels are thick and absorbent, and more like the size of bath sheets. If you will be staying here and are considering a massage during your stay, I strongly recommend the Lush Spa, just a few blocks away and a real value for the money.

The drinks are surprisingly affordable for such a swish place, and there were some intriguing cocktails. The service was fine. I hate to judge a place on its clientele, but I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Near our table, another group was already completely hammered (at ten at night) and shouting, singing, slurring their words, deliberately pouring beer on the floor (!) and the staff only reprimanded them after the girl climbed into the guy's lap and proceeded to eat his face. For all of their fancy appearance, the Rutland Bar doesn't necessarily attract the classiest clientele, and they'll allow them to carry on regardless of the other patrons, as long as they'll keep buying (even though they should have been cut off long ago).
