An old pub, the main bar area is pretty cozy to say the least. About the size of a decent double bedroom. Despite this, I was assured by one of the welcoming regulars that they recently had 36 people in at one time. He did admit however that, "they all knew each other very well by the end of the evening". With an open fireplace in the room, I was also advised of the system adopted on a cold day where everyone periodically shuffles round clockwise to avoid some poor soul getting toasted by the flames. We enjoyed a chat with the landlord and regulars whilst sipping a few bottles of Caer Edin Dark from the aforementioned Kinneil Brew Hoose. The 5 star rating reflects the friendliness of all we met and the undoubted character of the place. I highly recommend a visit to this pub for everyone but the unfortunately claustrophobic.

Stirling's resident Yelp expert, Nicola C recommended here with the disclaimer of "I don't know what it's like during the day though." So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. "Awwww, really?" I said. "Naw hen!" followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks (Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire (which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny - I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? On our first night there was live music at the bar. We enjoyed the singer/ guitar & harmonica player very much, but it all kicked up a notch when he got the whole room to join in on the singing. Everyone was clapping, stomping and pounding the table, while belting out a rousing rendition of "The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond". I can't remember enjoying a meal more. On our second night there, the power went out (thank you, Hurricane Amy). The staff showed that although they are retired horse thieves and pirates, they take their current jobs in hospitality very seriously. They could not complete cooking of the evening meals, so it was a quick pivot to sandwiches for all. They handled it with professionalism and grace that made the inconvenience part of the adventure (as one staff member quipped, it was all part of the haunted experience). Breakfast, too, was pulled together with what was available and ingenuity, as they made instant coffee and tea with water heated on the wood stove, and we feasted on cold cereal and granola bars. But as the staff met the challenges with good humor and made the best effort to make it a good experience for the guests, we walked away with an abundance of good memories and an enduring fondness for the Drovers Inn (and its resident horse thieves, pirates and highway men).

I've also just discovered it's now called the Allanwater Brewhouse! A group of us visited here on Saturday night. I'd never been to Bridge of Allan but was pleasantly surprised at what a nice area it seemed to be. The brewery is off the main road and it can be a little confusing where to go but thankfully we stumbled through the right door (look for people milling around in the beer garden, and then go in there!). Inside it's a pretty interesting space to sit in - high ceiling, lots of beers adorning the walls as well as beer paraphernalia and a cosy, well worn vibe. We ended up sitting right by the fire (which, although it wasn't on was still warm) on beer kegs with cushions which was a really cosy spot. For a Saturday night it was busy but not heaving so it was good to be able to get a seat and have a chat without it being too noisy or cramped. I didn't go up the bar myself so can't comment on the staff or prices, but they seemed to have an interesting selection of beers (mango) and I enjoyed my oj & lemonade (haha!).
