Update (2019): I stumbled across my review from 2017 and I felt it needed an update. We still love this place, it has really become an extended family to us. My oldest is a black belt 1st degree now and my husband, our youngest and myself are purple belt. My only regret is not to have started sooner! As with every sport, you harvest what you sow. ---------------------------------------------------- My child started at ATA when he was still 4. He cried because he was very anxious during the first class and Ms Rolison took the time to make him less anxious and to actually finish his first class. Almost two years later, my kid is purple belt and loves coming to ATA. He has come a LONG way and has learned to listen, follow instructions and to set goals and work hard for them. Even my 2.5 year old loves to practice forms with my son. I can't say enough about the instructors and their patience working with the Tiny Tigers all the way up to the youth of the program. My daughter has and is continuing to learn self esteem and self control through this program. Every one from Miss Tru, to Mr Johnson has played a critical role in the development of every student that they have. I can't say enough about the after school program and staff that drive around New Bern on a daily basis picking up these students from schools and safely transferring them to the Dojang. I truly love each of the instructors for helping to establish the well mannered and strong individual that I call my own. We signed our boys up before the pandemic, only to find out we have to wait several weeks to get our uniforms. The owner was aware of our special needs son, use being military, and the potential to move at anytime. Paid close to $1400 for 6 months of credits to use over the course of any time period, till they are used up. However, when the restrictions lifted we had to move. Took me over a year to get membership transferred only to find out it wont. Now I am not getting replies to my refund request. I would be mindful and get everything in writing because his verbal agreements are as good as monopoly money. I would avoid this location and business with them. If only zero stars were an option. This place wants customers, not students. Every encounter is a sales pitch asking you to spend more money. Nobody ever returns phone calls. We had to show up at the "school" to cancel when we moved overseas, and they still tried to continue charging us after a canceled contract. read more

I was trying to sign up my child for classes. First of all, nobody every answers the phone or returns calls. The website calendar is outdated by almost a year at this point but we figured we'd try to stop by when a class for my son's age group would be going on and check it out. Immediately I was taken into an office and given a hard sell. They wanted me to sign a 6 month commitment right that second which I didn't want to do as I don't know if my child will even like karate. I was quoted a price of $99 for uniform, $75 per month, but also, every other month is an extra $35 fee for the belt test and new belt. This is for 2 "days" per week, not two classes, it's kind of confusing. You can attend as many classes as you want but only on 2 days of the week. I was told most kids take two classes back to back on their two days, the same identical class back to back. I really was not sure my child would enjoy this at all so I said I'd have to talk to my husband...the guy ran out to the waiting area, told my husband he'd watch our child, and sent him into the office to talk to me. It took quite awhile to get out of there without signing up for anything and that alone makes me never want to use this business for anything. read more
