513 New Year's Eve Ice Luge
Patrick M.

After looking at most of the Ice Sculpture Artists in the area, I'm absolutely thrilled we decided to go with Johnson Studios Ice Sculptures. The total experience was awesome, and we definitely will be repeat customers. From the moment I called, they were extremely helpful and professional. Nate the owner answers his own phone (a really nice touch compared to the receptionists at the other big names) and is more than willing to give suggestions, send pictures, and share his expertise. My roommates and I were looking for some "flair" for our New Year's Eve party, and decided that a couple Ice Luges would do the trick. Nate had plenty of options, ranging from as basic as you want, to elaborate as you can think. We settled on two of the more "basic" options (I say "basic", but they are really gorgeous as you can see in the pictures). Needless to say, the luges were a huge hit, and lasted through the night and were still up and running for some more festivities the next evening. All in all, Johnson Studios Ice Sculptures blew away our expectations. We came into the process as complete novices, and came away looking for excuses to use ice sculptures in all of our work and social events moving forward. If you have any reason to need an ice sculpture, these are the guys in Chicago to call. p.s. Nate gave us a tour of his studio/workshop when we picked up our sculptures. His icemaking process is unbelievable, and some of the carvings he showed us in the freezers were beyond belief (a full sized statue of himself carved in ice...insane). This was a really nice touch, and helped to hammer home that this is no run of the mill corporation that puts profits over the happiness of it's customers.

I had a beautiful amazing ice sculpture made by Nate of a softball girl holding a bat for my daughters Sweet 16 and it was absolutely beautiful and amazing!!! Dana Kristopher and Nate were awesome and amazing!!! My daughter was in awe when Nate set it up for her party!!! I can't thank them enough!!!

Johnson Studios turned our event logo into an ice sculpture, a perfect rendering. http://agcchicago.org/chefsplayground/

My phone call today with Lee could have been much more professional. I called to gain clarity about two orders, both about missing items from a previous order and also to make sure that my other order was ready to be picked up and didn't accidentally get shipped. Lee's responses were sarcastic and unhelpful, causing me to not only be confused but frustrated. Before I drive an hour to pick up my orders, I wanted absolute certainty that they were available to be picked up being that this was not true last Friday. These are comments that Lee made: "didn't you receive an email?, Doesn't it say that the order is ready?, why wouldn't you have received your order?, are you sure you even placed your order?" The answers to these questions are not as black-and-white as Lee may think. And the most helpful and easy thing to do is to simply look up the orders and verify rather than make sarcastic comments to me. It should be obvious that I need help and that things are not clear for me, which is the reason why I called. After I was forwarded to Tony, who was able to clarify everything, I received another phone call from Lee following up with me to make sure I was fully helped. I did appreciate that. I'm well aware that we all have our off days, or are not on our A-game for every call.

*Where one's dulce dreams come true*…read more Looking for (almost) every Mexican candy ever made? Whatever you're looking for, Dulcelandia is THE place to find it all. It's like the mecca of Mexican dulces--from Lucas to Duvalin to Pulparindos to Dulces Vero, they have everything you could ever want. They also have locally-made piñatas and catrinas to add to the vibe of whatever party you're throwing. I was there on a random weekday, and it was pretty empty, which made it great to browse and load up my cart with antojitos as I pleased. Just don't go too crazy--you can quickly rack up a pretty large bill!

This place is every little Mexican kids dream and let me tell you, this new generation has it made. Back in the day my Mom used to take me to pick out my piñata at Abarrotera Mercantil. Right across the street from Cook County Jail. Don't get me wrong that store has excellent merch but Dulcelandia is like walking into a gold mine. 99% of the candy sold in Dulcelandia is Mexican candy. Nearly all of it I've never seen or tasted myself. Here is a list of good starters to try when visiting: (these are a few of my fave) Mazapan De La Rosa- crumbly peanut powder that's packed into a round shape. Kranky- chocolate covered cornflakes. Bubbaloo- similar to Gushers but gum with different flavored juice filling. The rest of the list you probably won't like unless you grew up as a kid eating and developing a pallet for. They're all tart and spicy, not sweet: (Personally I'm not a fan) Pelon Pelo Rico Tamarind Chili Push Up Candy- its a spicy candy gel that looks like hair when you squeeze the tube up. Lucas Chili Powder- it looks like a tiny salt container and they come in different flavors: chamoy, acidito, super spicy ect. I would go for the lime flavor. It's sour and tangy. You pour this directly into your mouth. Vero Rebanaditas (watermelon) & Vero Mango Paletas- these are spicy and tart lollipops. Aside from the plethora of candy choices they sell so many kinds of pinatas, decorations, and party favors. They have Yogolandia where you can make your own Yogurt cup and choose your toppings. They have a snack bar that sells elotes, cookies, hot cheetos, nachos, ect. and a seating area. I would inquire about birthday party packages. I'm not sure if they still offer party rooms and all the other amenities. Def a good spot to venture out. Don't forget to bring the kids!
