I ordered the polish frittata. This was great and unique. It came with a side of sesame bagel (so cool) - and I upgraded to a side of fruit. The frittata was super filling and tasty. Hubby ordered an eggs benny. It can come on a bagel or english muffin, he went with the latter. He said it was good. Apparently this place is famous! Our first visit to Victoria BC we quickly came here for some breakfast, Deborah was our server she was friendly and jolly! The pictures and memorabilia on the wall was pretty cool! You can't help but looking at everything. There's some history and stories behind those photos and Deborah was kind enough to tell us a few. The portions are huge and I loved the house potatoes. The brunch capital of Canada strikes again! 5 main reasons why I love John's Place: 1. The food, oh my god, the food. I have never once had something bad from this spot. I mean, how can you mess up brunch? Well it's pretty easy to, but John's Place knows what they're doing and does it well. Between their Eggs Benny Hall of Fame (the Meela and the Popeye being my top 2 faves) to the create your own omelette menu, you really can't go wrong here. I'm not much of a sweet breakfast person, but I've tried their pancakes and french toast before and both have been stellar! They also have a lunch menu. I've personally never ordered anything from the lunch menu, but those who I was with have, and their meals looked great! So that's an option if you're not feeling their brunch. 2. Ohhhhh, their milkshakes. Back when I lived in Victoria, I sometimes would come to John's Place JUST to pick up a strawberry milkshake. 3. The service. All the servers know their sh*t. They know the menu inside and out and make really awesome recommendations that save you when you're hungover and in need of a hearty, greasy breakfast. 4. The restaurant itself is eclectic and unique. It's got paintings, photos, and all kinds of different decor hanging from the walls. The walls from floor to ceiling are covered in them, which makes for great entertainment when you're staring off into space. 5. John's Place has been a Victoria favourite for over 30 years now. This was our third restaurant that we tried and they were the only ones who were able to see us with no wait (we had a ferry to catch). This place is a legendary hang out spot. Our AirBnB host not only recommended this place but actually drove us here. Cheryl, our waitress, was super friendly, joked and smiled and even brought us a couple of samples of their popular items. Who gets an amuse bouche for brunch?!? I ordered the Bat Out Of Hell meatloaf with mushroom marsala gravy and free range eggs. The boyfriend couldn't stop picking off my plate. His maple sausage eggs Benny were delish but clearly I made the better selection. Their pastries and desserts looked amazing but due to their amazingly huge portions, we left quite a bit on our plates and could only eye the sweets. I ordered the meatloaf and oh my! I was drooling after just looking at the dish. Was disappointed that my wife kept picking at my plate but it was just that good. The I wasn't really expecting the food to be that good but when I saw that the spot was featured on "You Gotta Eat Here" I did just that and my family wasn't disappointed. We walked in and my family was instantly greeted at the door. It was also great that even though I was with my wife and three kids, the staff was very accommodating to the fact that we had a stroller for a newborn. The food was great and the service matched. Brothers and sisters in chilies, this has been a good morning! Came into John's with a (I assumed fruitless) hankering for habañeros. Decided on the huevos rancheros and asked the very attentive server if they had anything spicy. She recommended sliced jalapeños (sigh) and I thought all was lost... But then she brought me a well-loved bottle of "special" hot sauce from her personal stash. Never heard of the brand but it was a suitably acceptable extract sauce. Well worth the wait if you hit a line-up. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. We loved the busy diner decor, floor to ceiling with Hollywood posters and portraits. Food? Outstanding. Lots of it and so delicious. I had the avocado, bacon and Brie eggs Benedict. So creamy and good. But even with everything on my plate, I kept snagging a fried potato from his plate. Not sure ​what all the hype is about. Where do I begin? Firstly our server never introduced himself and we had assumed the lady serving beverages was our server. Then it took forever to get anyone's attention. One lady literally waved back at us saying "Hiiii my name is Deborah" while waltzing away...we were so confused (because by now Drinks Lady had indicated she's not our server and we had no clue who our server was). I still couldn't tell you who our server was because when he came to the table he didn't introduce himself but started his spiel without listening to anyone at the table. Fine, maybe it was busy and he couldn't hear us...but he was responding as though he could! We ordered a few dishes and they were only okay. The only decent dish was the eggs Benedict with salmon and asparagus. But the frittatas were both too salty and the Belgian waffle was not good. At the very end, when handed the terminal to pay, the server was nearby but not paying attention so I had to print out all the receipts etc myself. When asking for a pen to sign for the tip he insisted on taking the receipts back so he could tell me which one to sign...despite the fact that I had to print them out and therefore knew which was the customer copy (hint it's the one without a signature line). Overall between the okay food and confused, inattentive service, i wouldn't hurry back here again. read more

This is a Victoria treasure!! Having traveled for over 25 years, few restaurants stand out like John's Place. Rodney the host was absolutely the nicest, most hospitable soul ever. He became a friend during our breakfast stay. Kaytlyn an outstanding server. She took care of us and proudly told us of John's Place history. What a lovely encounter! Rodney guided me to the meatloaf breakfast and Kaytlyn guided my beautiful wife to the Eggs Benedict. WOW!!! The food was beyond amazing! The chefs brought the best. My friend and I checked this place out after hearing about it on tv! They took reservations for breakfast so we were happy we didn't have to wait in line when we got there. They said they take a couple reservations every morning...so if you have somewhere to be and are worried about the line give them a call the day before! We of course both went for the eggs benedict. I got the salsa chorizo benny and it was sooo good. I was jealous of my friend's smoke salmon benedict thought because hers had the hollandaise and mine didn't have it :(. I tried some of hers though and it was really really good too. This place was very affordable, well worth the price. I wish I lived in Victoria so I could go back tomorrow. yum. read more

John's Place saved my life. It was the day after St. Patty's, I had no drive to make anything to eat and didn't even know if I COULD eat. Then someone suggested going to John's Place and I figured why not, I hadn't been there before but kept hearing all about how amazing it was. When we got there, we only had to wait about 20 minutes, which was incredible for being a party of 8 on Sunday after St. Patty's. After we got inside, I immediately noticed how spectacularly decorated it was. The artwork all over the walls was eclectic and showcased different artists, comedians, politicians, and more from early 1900's to modern day. Needless to say, I loved it. Oh, and I can't forget to mention, there was a massive stained glass window portraying a golfer and an incredibly long painting of a baseball field. Some might say that John's a sports fan. ;) So, we obviously all ordered coffee (necessary for life at this point) and, surprisingly, we were asked if we would prefer to have a medium or dark roast. It was a small detail but for me, made all the difference. And they also had our coffees (plus pineapple juices because why not!) back on the table within 2 minutes of ordering. Even when things are crazy, I hugely appreciate the emphasis on getting coffee out quickly. Plus, I got to see their cool system in place, where they use different mugs for the different blends, then automatically know which coffee to top people up with. I also want to take a moment to talk about just how amazing the serving staff was. Our server was named Cheryl and she was friendly, attentive, efficient, and clever (aka, perfect for me). But in addition to her, the rest of the servers that were working made impressions on me in just the few moments that I experienced with them, when they were dropping off food or coming to fill up coffee. I truly appreciated all of the staff members that I got to meet that day. When I took a look at the menu, I was taken aback by how strong the English influence was and it made me want to come back and try every homey British dish that I could get my hands on. This time around, however, I decided to go with the Huevos Rancheros. I'd also like to add that while we were waiting, a server came around with a plate that had their homemade cream cheese syrup and some pancakes for sampling. It was absolutely amazing and next time I'm in, I'll most likely be forcing whoever I'm with to split an order of... well, anything doughey so I can try that syrup again! But anyway, back to the main course! When the Huevos came, I couldn't believe the size. It was absolutely massive and full of flavour the entire way through. Every bite I took, I got a different combination of tex-mex classic flavours and all of them worked so well together. Plus, as an added bonus, the dish was so colourful and full of life! I ended up having to bring home half of it because I could barely stuff myself with the first half, but it made for an amazing day 2 brunch the next day. Last, but certainly not least, I simply had to get a piece of their apple pie. There was zero chance that I could even think about eating it while I was there, but I absolutely got it packed up to enjoy at home. And wow, enjoy it I did. I had to split it up into two different eating sessions because I simply couldn't finish it in one sitting. One of the tallest pieces of pie I've ever had and I can guarantee that next time around, I'll be getting another piece. Believe me when I say I don't take this lightly but...
