They almost always cook the fish fresh so it is hot with crispy batter. You have to wait around five minutes but I'd rather wait and have good quality than quickly have bad quality! Pizzas, chicken, pie etc are also available but I haven't tried them. The staff are really friendly and efficient. The prices are cheap. The food is good. Go and get some fish and chips!

Found out when I got there it is take away only. I got the mini combination. A piece of cod, fries and can of Coke for only 3 GBP. Great value! The fries were average but the fish was actually the best I have had while in the UK this trip. I have tried it in several places and been disappointed. I personally don't like the skin left on one side which many places did. It can sometimes leave a fishy taste I think. There was no skin at Masons...the batter was very light and crispy and the fish was cooked just right. A+ Masons! The fries may have tasted better if I had eaten there....after carrying home they were not hot and that makes a huge difference with fries for me. They weren't bad...just not special in any way. He said the fries were a small order but it was a very big order for me....could have shared for sure. The fish was a nice size as well. I would go back....and probably will before I leave.

With Oceans, they are convenient for me if I'm getting into Birmingham city centre and on my way to the office in Digbeth. I go past it nearly every other day, so if I'm running late and its lunch time; sometimes I do pop in and buy my favourite- the 5 hot wings and chips (includes a drink) for £2.50!! The hot wings from Oceans are lovely. As a fan of hot wings, usually KFC ones, I know the difference between tasty chicken and not so tasty chicken- it's my speciality. They do have a lot of meal deals in Oceans, really cost effective for students and for those on a budget. It's great to know that £2.50 can still buy you a meal which includes a drink as well. Their kebabs are also delicious. If I'm feeling like having something different, I do have the kebab meal; however this is £3.50 instead.

Siiiigh…read more Standing outside the generously, romantically-named Ocean and shutting your eyes just doesn't give you warm sunshine on your face, salty sea spray or the sound of children playing in the ocean foam. Instead, you get the shadow of a former Toys R Us, bus fumes and the sound of a moaning dad or three. However, the absence of the seaside outside is compensated by the little gem inside. Golden chips (proper, fat'uns), well-battered fish and a range of chippy extras - scallops and oi, oi, saveloy - make this a worthwhile visit, especially if you need some quick scran on the way to the Giant Screen Cinema (formerly IMAX) at nearby Millennium Point. Chippy beats popcorn - fact.

After already having two successful restaurants in Manchester, I was very excited about visiting Bistro 1847 after hearing only good things about it. Set in the beautiful Great Western Arcade, I thought it was strange to open a restaurant here. Especially after 6pm it is the only place open usually! But the atmosphere of the restaurant complements the peacefulness of the arcade. The interior of the Bistro is minimalistic and modern. Being someone who is allergic to Dairy and Wheat intolerant (I know!), Bistro 1847 is one of few places I don't feel weird at. The whole menu is Vegetarian, with dishes that can be adjusted to vegan or gluten free or both in my view. My and my friend were feeling fat so we both went for three courses. I had the curried Swede Cauliflower, Cashew nut butter and cinnamon cornflakes. So many flavours going on in a small parcel was a great choice. For the main I had "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside" (all dishes have these quirky little names!) which is a modern Veggie twist on fish and chips in case you hadn't guessed! I had the vegan version which had two huge pieces of smoked tofu which I really struggled to finish along with the chunky chips! I wasn't defeated and enjoyed all parts of the meal. For desert I had the "Good ol fashioned lover boy" I enjoyed it although I thought maybe the chocolate was a bit over powering as was so much going on. But the jelly was a nice compliment to the richness. The menu contains a large selection of cocktails and deserts for sharing if you and your friends are in search of lots of sweetness. This was my third visit on a Sunday since opening and has been progressively busier each time which is great to see. Bistro 1847 is a very relaxing experience and ideal place for a date or a catch up with a friend. And of course the food is amazing!

Oo-ee this is indeed a very classy vegetarian restaurant…read more The decor is modern, simple and stylish - shades of white and grey, nice white table linen, with a few tables downstairs, and more upstairs on the mezzanine level. There's a large window looking on to the arcade, which is great for watching people come and go. The food was fantastic. It's a fixed price menu, at £19 for two courses, and £25 for three. There's also a pricier tasting menu - the couple sitting next to me had chosen that option, and were really enjoying it. To start, I had the puy lentils, with roasted carrot, spring onions and garlic tofu. The tofu was done as a silky sauce - I'd never had tofu prepared in that way, and I thought it was really delicious. For main course, I chose the bell pepper ragu, with polenta. Again this was superb, with the polenta served as crisp little triangles on top. Both my courses were gluten free, as well as vegan, and their menu is very clear to understand. It feels like the sort of place you can completely trust to get things right. Service was quick and friendly, and there was a nice atmosphere, with other diners just quietly enjoying their meals just as much as I was. I'll definitely be back here next time in Birmingham, and I'll look out for their restaurants in other cities too.

My wife got the Hearty Vegan (£8), a full English breakfast vegan-style. And I got the Vegan Hash (£9). My wife loved her breakfast, remarking that the vegan sausages in particular were a highlight. I enjoyed my hash -- it came on a bed of fried potatoes, with tofu scramble, guac, wilted spinach, marinated red peppers, and onion. It was almost entirely unseasoned, so I had to add plenty of salt, pepper and hot sauce. Huge portion and very filling. Not the most culinarily exciting dish but it was very solid. Super friendly service and the food came out in under 10 minutes. Recommended spot.

I asked some Twitter friends for recommendations and came away with three; York's Bakery, Urban Cafe and Cherry Reds. I had a quick look at the menus and locations and decided on Cherry Reds. I'd been before but it was a long time ago and I'd only had coffee the last time. I met my mom and one of my sisters outside the cafe. We went inside and were greeted by a loud and smiley young lady behind the counter. I had a quick look at the menu and went for a bacon sandwich and a latte. My sister also had a bacon sandwich and my mum had scrambled egg on toast. I have one gripe with bacon sandwiches when I eat out; they rarely have enough bacon. I think for a decent bacon sandwich you should have at least 3 rashers of bacon. Cherry Red's bacon was very tasty. It was thick and cooked just enough. The bread was thick cut and lightly toasted. There were only 2 rashers of bacon, though. I know it adds to the cost of things but for 3 quid you'd expect 3 rashers! That was my only problem with the experience. The coffee was very nice also. Probably the best part of the visit was the server. As mentioned she was loud and smiley, in a way only Brummies seem to manage. It was refreshingly personal for someone used to the detachment of a lot of London establishments.
