I really wanted to go to Dell's for a Bloody Mary, but it was closed until later in the day. Boo! So we came here instead. I loved the down homeness of the bar, I loved they served a full menu, and my husband really enjoyed his chili. When John, THE JOHN, took his bowl, he remarked, "I guess he liked it," since hubby pretty licked the bowl. My gyro was great and fresh, and I thought they did a good job with their food. The Bloody Mary's were okay, but did not like that I had to ask for a beer chaser, and the bartender sort of looked annoyed. If I am in Wisconsin and order a Bloody Mary, I expect a beer chaser! I'm a tourist damnit! We enjoyed watching the games on the big screen, and listening to the locals talk to one another about smartphones. It's the best source of information-- word of mouth. We learned a lot. Will definitely stop in again if Del's Bar is closed! read more

John's Bar is a great example of what a hometown bar should be. The employees are all great- they have good drinks.. better food and reasonable prices. One note on food is come hungry!! The portions are huge!! I suggest trying their homemade hummus! Delish!! If you get there early on Sundays it's buy one get one on your first drink! They have a fun, laid back ambiance. The best part is that even though its on 3rd Street you don't get a lot of rowdy college students!!! The people tend to be anywhere from late 20s to 30s, 40s and so on! In town for some nearby training at Ft. McCoy... I was antsy to escape the college crowd of La Crosse when I happily found this "hometown gem" (next to Dublin Square). The atmosphere of this bar was welcoming, non-imposing, and enjoyable. Great selection of beer and mixed drinks at an affordable price. Total win. It was a welcome change from the shenanigans of the "recently turned 21 crowd" that inhabits much of downtown LaX. If looking for a low-key hangout with a crowd that is not ridiculously young, nor scary old, John's is the place for you. read more

John's Bar opens up my series of La Crosse pizza reviews. Ordered over EatStreet, so disregarding temperature of the pizza. Round pizza, dough looks to be made by a machine. Square slices, thin crust pizza. The sauce is awesome in moderation. Extremely sweet. Probably would be fine in a single slice. The crust is bland. The cheese is fine. Not greasy. It's a bar pizza. Fair price, worth a buy if you're sitting at the bar, but nothing to go out of your way for. read more

We came to watch the Twins game. It has quite a few tv's with sports playing. It doesn't have the rowdy, crazy, ranting college students. The drinks are a good price, too. This is where I would come to watch Packer games. read more

John's Bar (as is The Helm across 3rd street) is one of he better tavern operations in the state of Wisconsin.The owner is a hard working family man who is a good neighbor and respected leader in the tavern business.The owner can be seen getting the place ready many mornings and will make the extra effort to help keep the outside area looking good.If memory serves the bar had been on 3rd street for 50 years when the city of La Crosse tried to make them move about 30 years ago to build a much needed parking ramp.The legendary founding owner John Urbanek objected to the city attempts at having them relocate and they then were able to work out a deal to have the ramp built around and over them thus preserving the historic tavern's location in downtown La Crosse.The iconic slogan JOHNS BAR is known for is "You Are A Stranger Here but Once" dates back to the 1950's era when Johns had a manager/bartender named Ralph who was famous for being able to remember everyone by name.That tradition has been carried on to the present day by a smart capable staff led by award winning bartender "Guido".All in all John's Bar is one of the top flight operations one could ever find in one of the more competitive bar markets in the midwest. read more
