Completely, utterly maroon with a cracked windshield that resembled something like a smile line. But there's a new stud in town - a sparkly new gun-metal gray Toyota Yaris - taking up her driveway space. So it was 9:45pm and I was about to drive Martha to her final resting place at my dad's house. She started like a champ and even purred a little so I put her into drive, stepped on the gas and... ...nothing. I knew I needed to get her home, whether she wanted to go or not. It was over. There was nothing else I could do for her. A while back I upgraded to AAA Gold which gives me 100 miles of free towing, so I dialed the number and looked at her little tailpipe, coughing in protest. "Sorry, lil' mama," I said, and put in the call to the representative. Within 45 minutes, Rodrigues Brothers Towing was there. The guy flinched when I told him he had to bring her to Tiverton, but smiled and kind of nodded in a resigned manner. It was like he knew as well as I did what had to be done. I swear to some deity that his hands were a blur. In less than ten minutes she was trussed up like a wide eyed waif in a bad bondage porn movie on the flat bed, her little flat tire squished up against the side. The tow truck maestro asked about the address again, and I offered to write up directions. Usually when I suggest this to tow truck drivers or any AAA sent help, I get a gruff "No, I'm good." But from him, I got a smile and a genuine thank you. He even did all of the AAA stuff they're supposed to do: checking your ID and member card, etc to make sure you're who you say you are. I don't know about you, but I personally like it when people do their jobs well. The whole thing was over in less than 20 minutes, and as the tail-lights faded into the mist I saw a small puddle of oil where she had been - the only remaining memory of 140,764 miles. I walked back up the driveway and leaned on that hot new whip. "She's gone, baby," I said, a tear falling onto the freshly waxed metallic paint. "We can be together now."
