It prompted me to pull up my photos from our previous dining experience there, and the sandwich looks so much more unappetizing. The current sandwich is wet, pale, and oddly sweet. The color and texture are so different, so I'm not sure what they've changed from their original recipe.

The selection was a bit overwhelming, but ended up being fun as we met my wife's relatives who lived nearby, for pizza and drinks on a Friday night. As it so happens, our invitees lived close by but had never been here before, so it was the first time for everyone. Some helpful patrons helped us how to optimize. My wife opened a tab and received a card, which was placed above a tap to activate it. Any pours would go on the card, and prices varied across the drinks (e.g. Miller Lite was $0.28 per ounce while a beer like Bird Law Hazy IPA from New England was $0.76). One can easily create flights as well. There were plenty of beers that interested me, but couldn't keep track, and as of this moment (one week later), have no idea what I drank (it wasn't a lot, just enough to keep up with the others). We did order bar food (going on the same tab), all shareable, and it was decent. One were Italian Meatballs ($10), five pieces of from frozen but tasty meatballs, coming with five pieces of toasted bread rounds. Also got an order of Nachos ($13) which was recommended by the same helpful patrons: good with plenty of toppings (perhaps too much). A Bavarian Pretzel ($8) was a winner, especially dipped in the beer cheese. And the sausage pizza ($13) was definitely tavern style (though cut into pie shapes), with crumbled sausage underneath a thick layer of cheese...tasted like a really good frozen pizza prepared well. Made me miss Midwest bar food, especially at these prices. I also learned that I suck at pulling a pint...all mine were way too foamy and since you pay for any beer you pull, throwing away the foam was not a good idea.

This place is great to have a quick drink and a cigarette. It's in a convenient location right off of Calumet Avenue. There are some regulars that will give you the once-over when you walk in and it's basically a hole-in-the-wall/nothing fancy bar. It's always awkward to squeeze past the people sitting at the bar to order a drink and then squeeze through randomly placed tables to get to a booth. I finally made it here last night. Brunswick is an old German settlement that was founded in the mid 1800's. It's about two miles west of Cedar Lake/US 41, along 133rd/135th Avenue. The tavern sits at the southeast corner of 135th and Calumet Avenue. You can tell that the building is very old, but kept in very nice condition. We arrived around 6:30 PM, came in through the back door and settled up to the old bar. The owners were watching TV at the bar, waiting to serve those who came in. The menu is very simple: a good selection of domestic bottles (Miller, Bud, Coors, etc.) and a few imports (Grolsch, Warsteiner). The owners were very nice and we talked about the history of the tavern and Brunswick. According to the owner, this has been a continually-operated tavern since 1856, when it served as a stop for stagecoach travel. The tavern was very clean and had a lot of neat, old swag including a vintage Old Style light fixture. Beers were reasonably priced. It doesn't appear they serve anything but bottled/canned beer and lemonade, but definitely worth the stop for a cold beer. I'll be back next time I'm in the area!

Plenty of TVs are lined along the wall playing whatever is the thing, and the bartender has never had an issue changing the channel on one to satisfy a customer. They carry on top a few crafts on draft, and some of the regular piss water like any other bar. They do have a lot more craft in the fridge in bottles. The glasses are cold and frosty and run about 4 bucks a beer. There are also daily specials on the wall, and dollar tacos and 50 cent boneless wings are my fave. They do not try to be a 5 star Zagat Rated whatever kind of place, and that is why they get 5 stars. This is a place to drink, to sit down and relax and jam to Led Zeppelin, not drink organic vodka over grassfed beef burgers on gluten free pretzel buns whilst admiring each other's vintage pinterest page.
