Johnny Fivestar - although they don't seem to advertise it yet - are now doing Womens haircuts.
I like to keep my hair short, something which many hairdressers seem to get very wrong. 'Softening' (aka hacking away at) the front with thinning scissors, or leaving the back and sides too long meaning everything looks grown out within a week or two.
After a bad experience at Ishi, where I didn't get what I had asked for at all I really wasn't sure where to try. I went in to Johnny Fivestar and explained carefully how I wanted my hair done - undercut at the back and sides, more like a bob on top.
Nikae did my hair and was very careful to ask me at each stage whether the layer was the length I wanted it, giving me the option to decide what I wanted as we went along. I ended up with a very nice haircut which rivals those i have had when hair modelling at Vidal Sassoon. Nikae said she had enjoyed being given a challenge, and that she usually has to rope her friends into letting her try more adventurous styling.
I paid £26 with a Snapfax discount, I think it was actually supposed to be £24 (£30 with 20% off) but I was happy with what I paid. Would be good if they get a sign up advertising the Womens cuts soon.
After living in Germany for a few years, I was used to going to this kind of hairdresser which is neither top-end salon poshness, or an ultra-frilly womens salon, which I can go to with a stylish idea and they will do it for a fair price and no pretentious bullshit. So I am glad to have found this place, and I will go back for my next haircut. They are OK with walk-in appointments, which is good for me as my schedule changes a lot.
Another thing I was very pleased with was that the shampoo and conditioner used was a clean tea-tree or menthol smell and they didn't load my hair thick with pomades or sprays.
The music was very relaxed 'folk', reminded me of Bonnie Prince Billy. Was a nice change from the usual pop/club played at most hairdressers.
Overall - a positive experience. Recommended! read more
