I don't know what's happen, wel yes I do the pandemic. You can raise the prices, or lower quality but you can't do it at the same time. Ordered a half chicken dinner. Got a part of as breast, a (back) yes a back. a wing that looked like it came from another chicken, and a incredibly small leg like from a sparrow. The lettuce was old and wilted. I was pleasantly surprised... again... when I ate here yesterday (the last time was about a year ago). I didn't have high expectations because 1) this restaurant is right next to a hotel, 2) it's a diner, 3) the menu was like a bible. I actually ate at Johnel's a year ago for lunch with a client and forgot. My meal was good, 3 stars. Though the decor is "outdated diner", they have a humongous selection of breakfast lunch, dinner and dessert. I remember the Lemon chicken soup was good and you really cannot go wrong with steak and eggs (which was cooked to my request, medium rare). Even steak restaurants have a hard time cooking the steak at a perfect med-rare. For the price, it was a really good deal. I usually expect diner type restaurants to serve mediocre tasting (liked a 3 stars), however, considering the options around here. This place deserves a 4 star because of the good prices and the food quality vs. the other options around. read more

Breakfast here was great! Everything on the menu is very low priced. I had a veggie skillet and it did not disappoint. I came with a large group of people and everyone enjoyed their food. The food is OK and the establisment looks clean. I order take out majority of the time. Most times the food is cold but the soup is hot but I just warm it up at work. BUT I must say that the petite sandy haired hostess acts as if you're putting her out her way. She's not very welcoming. Don't know if she's like that with every customer or just particular ones. Doesn't say thank you or anything even if you say thank you, it's not returned. That's the issue and the reason I've calmed down on going. I love going here. It's super close by my house so when the husband and I want to eat so breakfast (that's not McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts) we go here. The food is def good and I never have a complaint when I go. The thing is we never sit down in there. Why? We're that close to it. I always get either the steak, eggs, and hash browns or a gyro skillet. I do recommend going there. It's really good and cheap for the amount that you are getting. read more

Sandwiches are amazing and come with fries and a soup or salad. Dinners are HUGE. And, every meal comes with bread and butter. We like to sneak off and go there for breakfast in the morning when they first open so we can have a snack before he takes off to work. The waitresses are nice and the food is decent. And a couple of my friends work there. They have a bar that is open there however it's not advertised enough to where people can see that it's there but it's a nice bar. read more

Great food and a family friendly atmosphere. The ribs and the open faced pork tenderloin sandwich were outstanding!

It was just barely OK. This is basically like going to a Denny's. The service was just OK... a little slow. The food was edible, not not very good. The place was clean though and the decor was in good shape. If you need food but don't care much about the "dining" experience, this is your place. Went for dinner the other night, it was not good. We were seated very fast and service was quick. The problem was the food. I ordered the ribs, they were not good. The bbq sauce was bad and the ribs were cold. I could tell they were not freshly made. They were reheated from whenever they were made, and were still cold. I can not recommend this place. read more

Today I ate at Johnel's. My waitress Nicole was so friendly. She has to be the sexiest waitress I've ever had. Her voice was like the tender dew on a fresh leaf and she smelled like Mademoiselle by Chanel. She really should be a model. But I'm glad that she is working at Johnel's so I can look at her every time I come to eat my burger. Today she had her hair up in a bun but I'd really like to see your hair down sometime. Love this place because the food is always exceptional! I highly recommend it to anyone in the area or visitors that are staying in Hammond, IN. It's the only place in nearby Hammond where someone can get a phenomenal skirt steak and eggs for less than $11. read more

This place used to be awful, well not awful I guess, just not anything very special. Luckily they built a new restaurant, and the parking lot is where the old restauarant was once located. The new restaurant is much better than the old one used to be. It looks pretty nice inside, and the waitresses are much better than the old ones. The service is good, and the food is not bad. Ironically, the worst part of the place is the bar area, which was the one promising thing in the old restaurant. I used to hang out in this bar with my friends, but mainly because we knew the bartender because we used to work with her. Since she left, we hardly see a reason to go there. read more

A great family restaurant with a large (but not too large) menu and daily specials. Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, service has always been friendly and efficient. Good sized portions are the norm and the food, while not gourmet, is quite delicious. There is a selection of soup daily; and unlike some restaurants, it is never too salty. It has a nice home-made flavor. And as a bonus, you can order a cocktail, beer or glass of wine with your meal. I went here last week for the first time with my parents and son. The staff was very friendly and the food was good . They bring out fresh rolls, then choice of soup or salad. I ordered a chicken wrap which was huge with fries, it was very good- only problem was it was dry, make sure you ask them to put ranch or something on it. I went to this restaurant yesterday with my extended family. Our party consisted of four adults and two children. The restaurant was a little busy, but we were seated right away because the dining room is large. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. We were there for an early dinner, so we all ordered entrees. We decided to order the full dinners because they included dessert, soup, AND salad for an additional $2.50. Totally worth it!! They were offering lemon rice and white clam chowder soups. I ordered lemon rice, and my aunt ordered the clam chowder, and both were delicious. The salads consisted of iceberg lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes, and a cucumber slice. They also offer an extensive list of salad dressings to choose from. My entree was the breaded pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes, and the portions were very generous. Two large tenderloins and a large scoop of mashed potatoes smothered in brown gravy! Fantastic! My dad ordered the cabbage rolls, which were a special, and he said they were good. My boys ordered from the kid's menu. No complaints there! Many kid friendly options at a reasonable price. Also, the kid portions were generous, so even my 7 year old was happy! Dessert at this restaurant is not the typical rice pudding, jello, or ice cream (although those are available). They have a bakery case near the entrance, and you are able to choose from any of those options when you order a full dinner. Yesterday, they had carrot cake, cookies and cream cheesecake, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, German chocolate cake, assorted pies, and a variety of other options. We all ordered different items, and there were no complaints! We were very happy with our experience at this restaurant. The food is good. Not spectacular or something I would crave. Not sure if Ill be back again. Service was good and quick. And they have a $1.75 add on to any meal which get you soup, salad, vegtable and dessert. So that's a good value. I wasn't impressed or disappointed just kind of meh. I love this place. They have the best chix lemon rice soup thus far! I use to work here when I was 16 and the recipes stayed the same. Every time I go home to hammond, I try my best to stop in. I have been a local at Johnels for years, but I have noticed that new staff are more ignorant than the old friends that serve my family and I. My family and I wanted a booth, there were none left so the hostess put us down on a wait list. While she did the one of the waitresses were there and heard her. We we waiting but a booth opened but to our surprise they ignored us and sat a couple that just walked in, in our booth, when my mother proceeded to ask that we should be seated first they ignored her. Even my father had to ask multiple times about our booth but we were completely ignored. By that time we had waited over 10 minutes, I get that it is busy but they need to be more organized. read more

The service and food was wonderful!! The homemade croissants are so good and buttery and flaky. I had to buy 6 of them to take home. The chicken salad stuffed melon was an awesome. We got a lot of food for the cost of it. After eating at restaurants for the last 3 weeks, this was home cooking food. If I lived here, I would come all the time.
