Dr Emison is/was a gifted oral surgeon. He took excellent care of the oral surgery components of my rare syndrome for yrs. He moved East to practice, and sold the Los Gatos practice to Dr Massoomi. I saw this individual twice, once for preop, once for surgery. Dr M came across to me as ignorant of my syndrome (not unusual), but chose not to read the records Dr E had left for him about me. Even after I explained the notes gave a good overview of my syndrome and oral surgery treatment over the last 10 yrs he wouldn't commit to reading my chart. I should have walked out then. I am not a fan of a dr who refuses to read pertinent notes of any highly complex patient. Perhaps he thought he could just 'wing it.' Further, Dr M had great difficulty giving answers to specific, treatment related questions. His primary interest seems to be on 'beauty enhancing' surgeries, while I was only interested in having my medically necessary surgery done. When speaking w/ both me and his staff he tends to turn his back and multitask, which may account for the limited and usually inadequate replies he gave me. In short, Dr M seems to have difficulty w/ highly educated, informed, complex patients; is irritated by the extra time these ppl sometimes require; and if you appear to be hesitant to simply "trust" him he gives off the impression he's offended. The immediate surgery I needed was quite minor, so I let him handle it. The day of surgery he continued to seem irritated, stressed, and unhappy I wasn't just accepting his breezy, shallow answers. The simple surgery was finished, and only required 3 sutures. However, 2 of the 3 sutures came untied *while I was being driven home* from the surgery. This would account for the larger than typical amount of blood loss I had at the incision site. (I didn't realize the sutures had come untied until I felt the suture material loose on the opposite side of my mouth. I then realized why I was bleeding more than typical from such a small surgery.) I called my fantastic dentist that afternoon. He saw me, we agreed I was 'okay,' and the best thing to do was let the area heal and hope the partially opened incision didn't become infected. It did not. I had the only remaining suture removed by a competent oral surgeon on schedule, and never went back to see Dr M. If you need wisdom teeth removed or other common oral surgery done, Dr M might be a competent doc. If you want a doc that treats you w/ respect, is able to acknowledge they don't know everything about every aspect of every rare syndrome that requires a lifetime of oral surgery care, and/or want a doc who simply looks at you when you ask a question and then gives a direct reply to the direct question, RUN, do not walk, to anyone else who is board certified in the Bay Area. This office is absolutely unprofessional. I was referred by my dentist and unfortunately missed one appointment and called to reschedule. Angelica was so rude and short and had the audacity to tell me over the phone. "Sorry but we're booked . I don't know when but we're booked and the doctor has other references" I'm like okayyy i only missed one appointment and she had the audacity to tell me " you're disrespectful with his time and appointment" After , i told her i had a family emergency. She kept going and i had to stop her and i stated " did you just scolded me and told me I'm being disrespectful? How unprofessional and that's not how you talk to a patient" I've been in the healthcare field for over 14 years and i never talked like that to a patient" i was so stunned ono how rude she was. I waited 40 minutes to even go back to the room, as I was waiting I heard all these people complaining about insurance and billing while just sitting in the lobby, either through the receptionist and billing woman or from the back rooms. This should've been a red flag. As I was a bit uncertain, I went up to The receptionist (who I had already spoke with twice on the phone to ensure that they took my insurance) and for the third time told me that I would be fine and that they had all the information they needed for my insurance. When they took me back to the room, I waited again for a while and then they took me to get X-rays. After the xrays the insurance woman came in to say that they arent under my insurance and that I have to pay out of pocket for everything. That they are out of network with my carrier. This obviously was a shock to me as I had asked many times before. I said that I was under the impression everything was covered. She said that I should know all my benefits since it's my own insurance (touché --but also rude). I told her that i had never used it before which is also why I was nervous about it. I told her that I will not be paying out-of-pocket because the surgery would cost a lot and I had hoped my insurance to pay for it. She gave me a look that was a bit rude and said you don't want to continue with the consultation or go through with the surgery still? I said I wasn't going to pay for it out of pocket (obvi I should just stop at the appointment without further costs). I seemed to be putting her out... it was a bit awkward. The xrays were $250 but she cut me some "discount" and made me pay half. I left with my X-ray results and frustrations of wasted time and money. read more

I typically do not spend the effort and time to write reviews, but my overall experience and dissatisfaction with Dr Emison's office really warrants sharing. Our experience starts with the issues in the difficulty in rescheduling and interactions with the front staff. This was for an initial consultation for wisdom teeth removal for my teenage daughter. Things come up as is the case in life and I had notified the office to reschedule a couple of times. On both occasions the front office/reception was very cold, lackadaisical and had no urgency in finding a date that worked. A warning sign but not a big deal I thought. After a couple of months of effort to be seen we are able to have our initial consultation. Our experience speaking with Dr Emison was positive. In that 15 minutes we spoke, my impression is that he is well experienced, competent and has a positive "bedside manner". After the consultation I was asked if I wanted to move forward. I provided my insurance info both days prior to my visit and when we came in. I asked about what my portion of payment would be and was surprised to find very ambiguous answers from the front office staff, Angelica and Kathy. Furthermore, I was being asked to sign a charge for a $255 consultation fee. This is the first time that any professional service I have utilized (medical, legal, accounting) where I have been asked to pay an initial consultation fee. More concerning, however, is,the staff makes no mention at time of appointment or arrival into the office or at any other time of any fee until we were ready to leave. This is a very deceptive practice in my opinion. When I inquire as to whether that consultation fee gets applied to the overall service I get annoyed looks from Angelica and Kathy. Angelica, as I am speaking, rudely answers a phone call as I was specifically addressing these questions to her without excusing herself. When she returns, she turns me over to Kathy who takes a "this is the way it is, take it or leave it approach" and proceeds to swing her chair around and turn her back to me in a dismissive manner. Are you kidding me? This front office has no business dealing with people. It is a real shame that a medical front office treats their potential patients this way. This is more than enough reason to seek an alternative provider that will do a solid job AND treat their patients with integrity and appreciation. I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled about 6 years ago. After delaying the surgery for years my dentist (Dr. Wesley Yemoto, see my Yelp Review) said I needed to get my wisdom teeth pulled ASAP. They recommended Dr John Emison. Dr Emison was very professional and explained the procedure. I can't remember exactly how long the surgery took because I was put under. All I know is that I felt no pain afterwards at all! I couldn't believe it! He did such a great job that I didn't even need the pain killers prescribed. My cheeks were a bit puffy but recovered very quickly. I lost about 5lbs from not being able to eat solids. I highly recommend Dr Emison for anyone looking to get their wisdom teeth pulled. read more

Dr Wes Emison performed oral surgery on my tooth. This sounds simple, but oral surgery is never simple. Dr is both an MD, and an oral surgeon. I looked forward to my visits as I had heard that he is the best! That is an understatement. I had a vertical root fracture where all pieces of the tooth and root needed to be removed. The next step was a bone graft which my body accepted, the post and finally the button attached to the post. Yes it was a dental implant procedure. It lasted one year and each surgery was done during Covid. His office is immaculate and I did not hesitate to go. All procedures were done with simple anesthesia/Novocain and without pain. I took no meds after each procedure as I had no pain. If I were to describe Wes Emison, I would call him a genius. A perfect MD and Oral Surgeon! Our daughter had her wisdom teeth removed here during the pandemic. Dr. Emison came highly recommended from two friends who didn't know each other and he lived up to their stellar reviews as did his surgical staff. The billing left a bit to be desired as several times misquoted or confused us with another family, same with frosty reception. But from our daughter's initial consultation through surgery and aftercare, Dr Emison and his professional staff were exceptional at explaining all aspects of the surgery which helped lessen anxiety, both our daughter's and ours. Her surgery went exactly as expected -- shout out to anaesthesiologist Dr Nose, another super pro -- as did her recovery and aftercare. I cannot conceive of a better experience and highly recommend Dr Emison and his team, especially after having a somewhat scary consult with another oral surgeon. read more

I brought my 18 year old son who needed all 4 of his wisdom teeth pulled a few weeks before he stated college. I was a bit nervous about the timing but Dr. Emison reassured us that it would work out. His staff was able to schedule a time for the surgery almost immediately. The surgery went well and my son was able start college with no side effects or pain. Tried to schedule a consultation with Dr. Emison for a potentially serious procedure; something to attempt fixing a potentially dislocation in the jaw due to bruxism. Our primary care physician referred him to us, and sent a fax to the office so we could make an appointment. We saw his Yelp reviews and thought he'd be a great fit, but unfortunately, the appointment never came to due to their terrible practice. We called Dr. Emison's office a few days after the fax was sent. They claimed they never received it. They also instructed us to fill out their patient form online (which takes a good hour to fill out). So we had our doctor send it a second time, and proceeded to fill out the form. We called back, we were told the fax was received, and the doctor would call us back within a few days to make an appointment. After almost two weeks later, they still hadn't called. So we called them; their office was closed and would be closed for another week. So, we waited, called back, and were told that the person who filed the fax filed it "improperly" which was why it was never seen by the doctor and why we never received a phonecall. We were told that they would personally make sure the doctor saw the fax, and that we would receive a phonecall within 2-3 days. Over a week went by, no phone call. We made one more attempt, where we were told that the consultation and "potential procedure" would tally up to $800, and that they wanted $400 now JUST TO HAVE A CONSULTATION, and that the consultation would be well over a month's wait. Keep in mind, this charge was to be OVER THE PHONE, before even attempting to contact insurance, before agreeing to any procedure, and before ever even speaking to the doctor in the first place. In other words, this was a $400 charge just to reserve time to speak to the doctor for a consultation. Needless to say, we never got in, and we never will. This is completely out of sync with other reviews. I'm not sure if it's due to the nature of the consultation we need to have, but to charge a POTENTIAL patient $400 before even having a consultation is completely unheard of and inappropriate. Dr. Emison's practice may be fine for your child's wisdom teeth or getting a decent cleaning judging by the reviews, but anything beyond that, you're best looking elsewhere. read more

I (Lee) went to Emison for consultation in Dec, regarding broken tooth that needed removal. I felt ill at ease and told him I felt that way, but as the interview progressed, I wasn't feeling any better about it. I stayed and stuck it out, but was feeling more and more upset. In addition to not feeling at ease during the consultation Q&A process, I have Delta Dental insurance and had prepaid for the appt, but at end of appt was required to pay more, and also initial some 2- 3 pgs of items that might have been talked about, but I was visibly upset by then and couldn't remember each item. However, I conformed to their wishes as best as I could, even though I was very confused and stressed about various aspects of the consultation process.. I told them that day I might not return for the surgery, and I did officially cancel the surgery appt. in plenty of time before the surgery date. . The above was my experience. I've had a bone graft and implant by Dr. Emison, and have had success with both. The process was smooth and relatively easy, as I had less than a week recovery time for each. Our orthodontist referred us to Dr Emison for our teenage son's wisdom teeth extraction. Every step of the appointment process, consultation, surgical and follow up appointments were very detailed, more thorough than anticipated. We had no unanswered questions and felt well prepared for the surgery and our son was comfortable and at ease. The staff and Dr Emison are very friendly. The molar on the left side on the top of my mouth broke in two pieces and my dentist referred me to Dr Emison. After reviewing the X-ray, he recommended to remove the wisdom tooth in that area as well, all in one procedure. Prior to the surgery, Dr Emison took the time to explain me what was going to happen and how everything would be done. His assistant showed me a 10 minute instructional video detailing the procedures, which was very helpful in understanding. The surgery took only 20 minutes. Following the surgery, my wife drove me home and gave me some ibuprofen, as directed by Dr Emison. Prior to the surgery, he prescribed me stronger pain medication to ensure I would not suffer afterwards, but I did not need any of those. I did not need a single type of pain medication after I woke up. Not even ibuprofen, paracetamol or aspirin: nothing whatsoever. The area felt a bit sore, but that was it. Excellent job and I would recommend Dr Emison to anyone who needs oral surgery. read more

All my fears were allayed after having a tooth extraction, a bone graft and an implant because of the professionalism, thoroughness and expertise of Dr. Wes Emison and his competent staff. I followed the pre-operative instructions I received which were comprehensive. As a result, I did not need pain meds for the extraction and only a few Advil for the bone graft and implant. I had been putting off getting my wisdom teeth extracted for nearly a decade, partly out of fear of the procedure, partly out of fear of the recovery. Dr. Emison and his assistants were friendly, informative, and very understanding. Dr. Emison gave me a very thorough explanation of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. I felt so incredibly relaxed before, I had no memory of the procedure itself, and my girlfriend had to keep me from driving later in the day because I felt zero pain or uncomfortability, even after the medication had worn off and prior to taking any pain meds. All I can say is that if I had known how incredibly professional, skilled, and friendly Dr. John Emison and his staff were, I would have had this procedure knocked out years ago. read more

first review i have ever written. he came highly referred by my orthodontist and i can't believe how rude the office staff and this doctor is. i left the office on two occasions feeling completely insulted and belittled. dr emison was not reassuring or informative regarding the procedure and left me feeling uncertain after not recommended which sedation for was appropriate for the procedure my son was to undergo. during the consult he was incorrect in the teeth that needed to be worked on. he acted indignant when i asked if insurance would pay a portion "i don't know anything about where the money comes from" . i feel bad for the office staff working for him. the lady at the front desk hung up on me once i cancelled the appointment due to my uneasy feeling. not professional at all. it seems sad and his rude inappropriate behavior is rubbing off on the whole staff. read more

I give Dr. Emison my highest recommendation. He did a fine job on my implant. I am a white knuckle patient and waited three years before screwing up the courage to get oral surgery. He did everything to gain and earn my trust. I was particularly impressed with his attention to detail in explaining the procedure, in the pre and post surgical instructions, and in the follow up after the crown was installed. The office staff was very courteous and the facility clean. The price was also fair considering he is an MD and I was fully sedated. The result was great and I experienced surprisingly little pain as I healed. He was recommended to me by my trusted family dentist of 30 years and i would not go anywhere else if I ever need oral surgery again. read more

I don't usually review my doctors on yelp but after reading the review by Kelly W.(one star), I feel impelled to do so. What alternative Dr. Emison medical office must she have entered to have written such a mean-spirited and unpleasant review? Since she did not avail herself of his excellent services I cannot imagine her comments would sway any potential patients. At least, I hope not. Dr Emison is a superb doctor and a lovely man. His staff is very professional and, also, kind and friendly. I have had many implants with bone grafts done by Dr. Emison and had 100% satisfaction in all aspects of my surgeries. I trust him implicitly with my oral health. I have actually enjoyed myself when visiting him and his staff. And I used to be afraid of dentists. read more
