I wouldn't recommend this office if it were the last dentists on earth. Mr. Lyons was extremely rude to me, as well as his staff, I don't understand how he even has staff. I went in for a simple filling, during the filling he started yelling at his assistant for other supplies, then he went out of the room and the dental assistant tells me that he is now doing a root canal, and she hates when starts a different procedure without telling the patient. So he started a root canal on me without even telling me or consulting with me about it! And to top it off he did a real crappy job on the root canal due to the fact that I still experience pain in the tooth. He is a piss poor excuse for a professional. Do not go to this dentist. To start with, he's abusive to his staff. They are clearly in fear of him. Next, he doesn't know what he's doing. My wisdom tooth extraction experience follows: The procedure (and risks) were never discussed with me beforehand. I showed up on the day of the appointment, and was given valium and demerol. I couldn't tolerate the nitrous oxide, so they gave up on that. During the procedure (which I was fully conscious for, though I couldn't feel anything), I heard him say, "Gee, it looked so much easier in the X-ray..." Wow, that inspires confidence. He only managed to get 2 teeth out in the time it normally takes to remove 4 teeth. He had to let me go at that point, because the drugs were wearing off. I got home and spent 24 hours sleeping and taking pain meds. When I got up, I had a massive bruise on my cheek, and tears in the skin at the corner of my mouth from having my mouth stretched too wide during the procedure. This was only the beginning. As it turns out, my jaw muscles knitted together during my 24 hour nap, and had to be slowly pried apart. This hurt so much that it caused my eyes to water involuntarily. When I told this monster of a dentist that he was hurting me, and to stop, he told me to grow up. In addition, he cut a hole in my sinus, resulting in a massive infection in my cheek which resulted in a month of two kinds of strong antibiotics, one prescribed by "Dr." Lyon, and the other prescribed by the oral surgeon he sent me to after he panicked because the first antibiotics weren't working. He also severed a nerve, I still don't have full feeling in the right side of my mouth and never will. Dentists that I've seen since this whole episode are all appalled at the scarring inside my mouth from the removal. I will never get my other two wisdom teeth removed, and I have a hard time even visiting any other dentist because of this butcher. Stay away from him. read more

Had an emergency situation and was seen within the hour. Quick and efficient work completed by Dr. Lyons and assistance. Front desk staff was very helpful and polite. Went back a couple weeks later for routine cleaning and had a positive experience overall. Assistants were nice and informative with special care I needed. read more

Run for the hills! Find another dentist! This last year Dr Lyon and his staff said they were going through issues with the insurance, so they couldn't send me a bill. 18 months later, after 1 root canal, 4 crowns for me and two for my wife (he doesn't do fillings, he does crowns made of titanium, not gold or silver), we have a bill of over seven thousand dollars. Should have looked for another dentist earlier, my bad. I guess he'll stay longer in Aruba or buy another BMW. Stay away from Dr John Lyon, plenty of other competent dentists in Charlottesville. read more

Dr.Lyon is very nice and respectful, great prices and discounts ( i saw comments disagreeing but thats my personal experience) i do think he takes a while in between of operations and i think thats due to the amount of patients at one time, but great dentist overall imo. read more

Thank the Tooth Fairy that I didn't have the experience of Jen, the first reviewer... please send her some good vibes right now, if you're so inclined. My experience was not traumatic. I feel lucky. I anticipate trauma every time i go to the dentist because what they do is managed trauma. The sucking, drilling, drooling and knowledge that the air's filled with people's pulverized tooth dust! Some dentists manage this inherent trauma better than others. Dr. Lyons & Lyons (husband/wife team) didn't do so great. The end product of my cleaning was good. Clean teeth. No damage. But, I felt like I was drugged: Dr. Mrs. Lyons lectured me on dental stuff the whole time. During breaks in between water-pic cleaning, it was interesting & I appreciated the info. But, the majority of the time, I was deafened by the equipment and could only hear a muffled "Mwa mwaaa mwa mwat mwat mwat mwaaaaawww". That plus staring up at the bright exam light, made purple from the safety sunglasses i was wearing. It was a trip. Some time later, I returned for the drill..... yikes! It wasn't that bad b/c they numbed me with a local so I didn't feel the novocaine shots. Here's what was bad: the Vibe. Dr. Mr. Lyons conducted my minor filling as if it were emergency heart transplant surgery. He jabbed his assistant with the name of the tool he needed next. He insisted the sweet assistant hold his tools in the exact coordinates to enable a 2 second exchange instead of a 3 second exchange. He said please but it was just a sound. The snappy motions with which they exchanged tools reminded me of a marine brandishing his weapon @ a very official funeral. At one point, he grabbed the assistant's wrist to position it 4 millimeters closer to him, thusly shaving off the .35 second that most assuredly saved my LIFE! Er, I mean, got me out of there a little quicker. I've had about 6 other filling experiences with almost that many other dentists, all of the fillings more complicated & extensive than this one. Dr. Lyons did a fine job. My tongue's still there. I can move my eyeballs. I still can't wiggle my nose. But, because of this vibe, I felt terribly anxious while under the drill. I felt bad that the assistant was treated so abrasively. I felt curious about how she and the other nice women were treated when there wasn't a patient present. I won't be going back to this office. They did fine work with this minor filling but, the vibe stuck with me. read more

Dr. Lyon and his team are not only a fantastic practice, that can meet all of your dental care needs, THEY treat each patient like FAMILY! I've been a patient for over 20 years and cannot imagine going anywhere else. This practice is great for routine cleanings as well as the more extensive dental care needs - including sedation services! Dr. Lyon, his wife (also a dentist), and the amazing hygienist are talented professionals who provide kind, caring, reliable services to all patients, at each office visit. I must also share that I have never had to wait longer than 5 minutes at the time of my scheduled appointment (in which is unheard in the healthcare profession)! The front office staff are also top notch. They are conscientious of patient costs and are always looking for ways to reduce invoicing by offering discounts/finding promos. Furthermore, are seamless in their collaboration with insurance companies when issues arise. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Lyon's practice to anyone, as their entire team make each step of the dental visit process so simplistic and carefree. read more

Went to him some years ago because of insurance and he did a crown on me. After the installation, he told me I would have food stuck around the crown and I thought it would not be a big deal as he walked away caring less... After seeing other dentists since then, I have been told numerous times that I should have that crown replaced because the food getting stuck to the imperfect/flawed crown installation will cause increase in bacteria and cause bone loss to the area! This is what I pay full price for???! read more

I went to see this pair of clowns three times. My first visit was great. The hygenist cleaned my teeth and Dr. John Lyon came in to do the exam. He was polite and everything was fine, but that was because the hygenist was great. My 18 year old son had a cleaning with Mrs. Dr. Lyon and did not like her. At this point I was still thinking that things were good at this practice and he didn't like it because she was telling him the truth about his needing to brush more and floss. Second trip for me, I had some fillings removed. He was nice to me but so rude to the staff. I kept thinking... is he really as rude as I think he is or am I being overly sensitive? He was insulting the group of women who worked there and talking about how he was going to take away their break room because they did not keep it clean enough. His assistant that day seemed a bit nervous and I could see why... he was rude and hard to work for. I decided to give it one more try before changing dentists. This time I was scheduled to see Mrs. Dr Lyon for a basic cleaning. She asked if I had had anything change since my last visit and I let her know that I had had some veneers and a new crown made at UVA. She said to me, " They clean teeth there, too." I asked her what that meant. I explained to her that I could never have afforded to have this work done, but the head dentist offered to have a resident do some work on my teeth that really needed to be done for a very reduced fee. She said, "We don't follow up on other peoples' work. I will be back." She left the room to do something... maybe discuss me with Dr. John?? I was livid. I have been to many dentists who were obviously following up on other peoples' work and no one has ever talked to me like that. She is even ruder than her husband, from my experience. Almost every time I mention this dentist to anyone, they are in agreement. Drs. Lyon are rude and I have even had dental professionals tell me that their work is shoddy. Knowing if a dentist does good cavity repair is not something a patient knows unless it falls out or something, but other dental professionals who follow up on another dentist's work, know bad work when they see it. They also have a HUGE turnover in employees, because of the way they treat everyone. Take my advice. Steer clear of this dental practice!!! Don't work there and don't go there to have your teeth cared for and to be treated terribly. read more

DO NOT GO TO DR.LYON! He treats his staff and his patient with such disrespect its such a surprise that his practice is still running. And that probably is because Dr. Betty (his wife) is a sweet women and the rest of the staff is also. He does not know what he is doing! And refuses to hear anyone else's opinion (yours or his staff) because he ALWAYS think he is right. Another reason why not to go there: I came in for a root canal (on 1 tooth, because that was all he said in our previous visit) and since it was going to be pretty hurtful I decided to be sedated. I thought I could trust him. Well after awakening i went to the front desk to pay for my one root canal. And to my surprise I was being charged for an EXTRA 2 more root canals. **Before you come into to do a procedure he tells you how much it is going to cost so you can pay after it is done before leaving. Well, I refused to pay for the 2 extra because I did not say that he could go ahead on 2 teeth that I had no idea that needed some work to it. And if it was the case that I did need it, he should have told me after he finished the original one so I could schedule another time to come in when i have more money. He said that he would charge me FULL price to my account. The hell I am. I am not going to pay that man anything! What he tried to do was commit fraud! I am pretty sure that this is against his business ethics and his HIPPA laws. And apparently this is not the first time he has done this to a patient, because a co-worker of mine had the same experience. He talked down to me as if I was an idiot! This is not how you treat a patient. I may not know much about teeth but I know how to conduct a business and talk to CUSTOMERS! DO NOT GO TO DR. LYON!! He did such a horrible job that I started to have bone loss and a vertical root fracture. Now I see a periodontist. This man should lose his licence to practice!! read more

I have no words to describe this doctor and their service. I had my crowns done last year and now I have an infected gum/root canal. They didn't only refuse to see me and see my x-rays from my new dentist, he came up with him telling me to see an endodontist before having the crowns done last year which is totally new to my ears. I went in for a regular check up and he suggested we have new crowns. He was very nice and welcoming in the beginning then after having my crowns done they refused to give me a payment plan and he refused to meet with me or see me he would just send his staff to talk to me. Plus, he is very disrespectful and rude with them. read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible dentist. He billed my insurance for a procedure he did not do, then lied to the insurance company about also having used a special xray shield which they did not, and used broken xray equipment. When I called and cancelled my next appointment, which his office scheduled without my knowledge or consent, the dentist himself called me and was quite hostile. read more

Worst dentist EVER! He filled my teeth with a material that he knew would break down, ensuring my returning over and over throughout ten years. Two new dentists just told me that because of his poor dentistry, I only have nine teeth that can be saved and four would need root canals! They both said I was screwed by his terrible work. read more
