OK so I never thought I'd be reviewing a dentist on Yelp but I am moved to do so because I am so impressed by my experience with Dr Akeel and his staff. Let me begin by saying I HATE dentist visits. In fact, I may have a bit of PTSD from my previous experiences. Had all my appointments been here, I don't think I would view dentist appointments any differently than haircuts or massages - yea, they are that good. The hygienist (Carrie) has a gentle touch and cleaned my neglected teeth without any pain or discomfort. Dr Akeel gave me a thorough exam and said, 'see you in six months.' You know what? He will. Highly recommended!! I just had the best experience at Dentistry by Design. I lost a filling and had put off getting it fixed because I didn't have a dentist in the area. After my tooth started bothering me, I called this morning, they had a cancellation and took me right in. The staff was professional & kind! After years of neglect at the Veterans Administration and dealing with broken necrotic teeth I was finally reccommended to see ED. Not only did he clean up all the neglect he dealth with the VA on Payments etc. I can now eat steak again and have a new smile. He is a perfectionist and wants it done right! I would say he is probably the best Dentist I have had in over 64 years. If you need anything this is the Dentist to see. I will sonn have my entire family under his care. I have been to many dentists over the years and can easily say that Dr. Akeel is the best. I feel so lucky to have found a dentist as experienced, thorough and reliable as he is. My teeth and gums are in excellent condition. Aside from other dental work, Dr. Akeel placed an implant in my lower right side and one in my lower left side. I was so impressed by how easy and painless the procedures actually were! And I have not had any problems since. I strongly recommend Dr. Ed Akeel to anyone who is looking for a GOOD dentist who can stand behind his work! The office staff is also very friendly and polite. I happened to find this provider through my insurance company's website. I'm very pleased with the service. The wait time is usually under 15 minutes from the scheduled appointment time. Everyone that works there is very friendly. They have some cool TVs and computers that show your x-rays in 3d. The best part? No co-pay for me. They scheduled my next appointment at each visit, and called to confirm. read more

Going to Dr. Akeel's dentist office, I was quite impressed with the technology and ease of getting an appointment every six months. The office staff was always on top of things and the dentists (both Akeel and Sina) were very pleasant. The reason I did not give this dental office five stars is that Dr. Sina had prescribed me an NTI device, which essentially works as a night guard to prevent teeth clenching and grinding. I was told to wear this device at night without any indication of when I should stop. A year after I started wearing the NTI, I began to notice that my teeth only touched at the molars, which exacerbated the teeth grinding. Lo and behold, I consulted an orthodontist and was told that the NTI created an open bite, which is why my front teeth don't make any contact. If the dentist had told me to use the NTI for a short term, I wouldn't have developed such an evident open bite. So now I have to pay for braces (even though I had them back when I was a kid) to fix the open bite that was created by the NTI. I wish the dentist had been forthright with me about potential consequences or had presented me with alternatives. Now, I get to pay a few thousand dollars to fix the issue. I take full responsibility for not having done my research, but I'm not a dentist and wouldn't know all of the options available. So, buyer beware. read more

Dr. Akeel's office is great! They work with the latest technology. I was able to see my X-Rays & close up photos on a giant TV from the chair. They were very clear about the procedures & cost associated up front. Receiving a text to confirm my appointment was a welcome reminder & just one example of many extra steps this office takes to enhance your experience. read more

I lived in Virginia 7 years ago and saw this dentist. I remember because this was the dentist who looked at my wisdom tooth that grew in sideways and all the way in the back of my mouth and told me there was decay because I couldn't reach it to clean it. He wanted me to keep the tooth because there was no reason he saw to get rid of it and instead of taking it out, cleaned it up. Fast forward to today, I had to miss a days worth of work and saw a dentist the same day because of the same tooth, which is infected. It didn't matter how often I brushed, if I flossed and did mouth wash, it still decayed because as he said I couldn't reach it and he did not want to pull the tooth. I wouldn't recommend this dentist to anyone to prevent any damage. Also I want to let people know, that instead of educating me about how to take care of my teeth because my parents for some reason lacked the know how or time to teach me, made me feel horrible, like it was my fault my teeth were bad. I didn't see another dentist for 7 years because I felt so bad about my mouth. The new dentist I am seeing and the dental hygienist took the time to teach me proper flossing, like telling me to scrape the outside of my teeth, and how battery operated toothbrushes can be worse than a manual toothbrush. Instead of passing judgement, and taking the time to better myself I felt worse and it created more harm than good. I am now reversing the damage in my mouth, slowly but surely and seeing a dentist more frequently because I know I can trust my new dentist to teach me and share what is good for me rather than me feeling the way I felt before. read more

My experience with this dentist and hygienist was far better than I have had with any other office. The hygienist wast thorough but with a soft touch. The doctor was honest and informative. Dr. Akeel is a true artist. I had a single-visit crown on a molar and a wisdom tooth extraction and couldn't have been more pleased with the procedure and the results. I was skeptical when Dr. Akeel recommended both procedures in the same 1-1/2 hour visit and also concerning the in-house crown production -- just the best to have it all done in one uncomfortable visit. Dr. Akeel became my dentist in 2008 when I carefully chose him to remove all the metal in my mouth, and there was much to remove. You see, I had been newly diagnosed with MS. And since old amalgams are mostly mercury composites they had to go - safely, as not to expose me to even more poisoning. Seven years later I am still his patient for well care and exams and remain very pleased with his work. Dr. Akeel is a gentle dentist who delivers the BEST pain free numbing injections I've ever had!
