She got me into her office with the "$99 tooth extraction" scam. I made the appointment and explained that I wanted a $99 tooth extraction, and I said the same thing when I showed up to the appointment. Wouldn't you know it, I paid $235 to have them cleaned and X-rayed, then she sent me on my way without pulling the broken tooth. She apparently scheduled me for a follow-up cleaning, which I did not keep (I only wanted a $99 tooth extraction, not a freaking commitment) so she put me into collections over a bill for a missed appointment. I feel like such a chump. This was 5+ years ago I think. I hope she becomes a politician, she would fit right in. read more

When my son's orthodontist told me he was going to need 4 teeth removed before he could be fitted with braces, I was nervous. We had left our long-time dentist due to a falling out over poor care and billing issues, and I didn't feel comfortable simply picking out an appropriate dentist out of the phone book. Upon our orthodontist's recommendation, we went to see Dr. Alcorn. My 13-year-old son was understandably anxious, but Dr. Alcorn's staff could not have been more considerate and understanding. They made him feel as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. They gave me the option to sit in on the procedure, but I didn't because my son absolutely forbid it. So I sat in the waiting area, wondering if he was doing okay. Dr. Alcorn came out to tell me that he did well, and was happy to answer the few questions I had. My son told me that his hygienist was "cool", which is high praise indeed from him! A week later, I took my son back for a checkup on the gums where his teeth had been removed, and to have the remaining adult molars sealed to help guard against future cavities. At the same time, I had my 10-year-old daughter in for her cleaning. Both kids said they liked the hygienists that were working with them. I will say this, Dr. Alcorn has a no-nonsense way about her. She is definitely not the "warm fuzzy" type, although her receptionist and her hygienists are. If you are a very sensitive individual that prefers to be coddled a bit, then Dr. Alcorn is probably not a good match for you. There are some highly regarded dentists in Charlottesville that specialize in sedated dentistry, that might prove a better fit. For my family, however, Dr. Alcorn and her staff turned out to be just what we needed! read more

My family and I went to Charlottesville Dental Care for a year - five cleanings in total while we were under the impression we were being covered by our insurance. We weren't... which contradicts what we were told, but ultimately falls on us to double check. However, instead of bringing it to our attention, we were encouraged to keep coming in and making appointments. Then, nearly a full year after our original appointment, we were sent a bill for almost $1k - the full balance of all of our appointments. I feel like it should go without saying, but if we were informed one, two, even three months after our first appointment that there was a problem with our insurance, or a balance due, then we would have never made subsequent appointments. Sure, it would have been painful getting that first bill and realizing that Dr. Alcorn was not a "preferred" provider for our insurance, but it would have been a fraction of the cost & stress that came after nearly a year of appointments. Things only got worse after receiving the bill. I left voicemails and requests to speak with someone and never received a call back. When I was able to speak to someone I would be promised that it was being looked into and someone would get back to me - they never did. In the end we requested to speak directly to Dr. Alcorn through her front desk staff and also by email. She never returned our call or emails. My advice, unless you are one of the lucky few that never has medical billing/insurance issues, steer clear of Charlottesville Dental Care due to the total lack of customer service and professionalism from the top down. read more

Stay away; stay very far away. On the positive, the hygenist who did my cleaning (Denise) was awesome. Warm, sensitive, and able to clean teeth with nary a prick to the gums, I'd highly recommend her if you just need a cleaning. I would not recommend Dr. Alcorn. She was gruff, not terribly sensitive to people who have an aversion to needles or a gag reflex, and speaks down in a condescending way. You know when you just get a bad vibe from people? Yeah, that. A week after having two cavities filled, I get a call from the billing person at the office stating that they could not verify my benefits with the insurance company. I started to freak out, wondering what would happen if I somehow did not have coverage. She said she would try again calling the parents company; I asked her to please call me back to let me know of a resolution. I called the company myself to verify benefits, but never heard back from Dr. Alcorn's office. Today, I got a letter from the insurance company saying that although they did cover some of it, I still owe $365 even after the co-pays I did for each service at the office (roughly $150) for the total of one cleaning and two cavities. read more

As the previous reviewer did not specify his or her reasons for the one star rating, it is impossible to think that their expectations were reasonable. I fractured a root in a front tooth. Being new to the area, I had not yet selected a dentist. Deciding on a female dentist, I selected Dr. Alcorn. I have had the most attentive, hands-on care throughout the lengthy implantation process that one could imagine. In order that my husband could go tend to our business, they even drove me to the oral surgeon. While waiting for my crown to arrive, my temporary came loose and they were able to get me in that day to have it reglued. The office is small and everyone is friendly. I feel very comfortable there and will become a regular patient. read more

I went to her a few years ago as I had a toothache in a back tooth. She said I had to have a cap and gave me a cost estimate of $2400. I then went to another dentist who said I just needed a cavity filled, the insurance covered the whole thing. Then I received a bill from Dr. Alcorn for $245. just for the false estimate.I tried to discuss this to no avail. I had no other option I had to pay. Years later that tooth is still fine. If I could review with zero stars, I would. Dr. Alcorn may be a fine dentist, but her billing practices are - at minimum - very questionable and her office manager (Beth) is unbelievably rude. If I treated any of my patients the way she treated me, I would be fired on the spot. The day before a regular cleaning, I received a bill for over $200 dollars for work that I had done roughly 7 months prior. I had already paid over $350 for the work done at the time of the work, which was exactly how much they asked me to pay then. I had never seen this new bill in my life and I certainly didn't have $200 dollars lying around to make the payment on the spot. I called the first thing the next day (the day of my appointment) to question the bill, and she told me that either I could pay the bill or tack on another $50 for a no-show fee. That basically amounts to extortion. When I went to my appointment and asked her to give me at least until the next day to look into it, she told me that she could call my insurance company right then and began to dial them on speakerphone - in front of many other patients in the waiting room! Talk about a HIPAA violation. She basically bullied me into signing a form that would ensure their $200 bill (valid or not) would be paid, or risk an additional $50 fee! We have switched back to our original dentist and will never look back. read more

It's very difficult for me to understand how this place only has an average rating of 3.5 stars. I went here today as a new patient and had a great experience. The location is easy to find and office was clean and modern. The blonde woman working the front desk was welcoming and helpful. While they were quite busy, I only waited ten minutes. The dental hygienist and Dr. Alcorn were both personable, efficient, and gentle. One of the easiest and stress free dental experiences I've ever had! read more

Dr. Alcorn and her staff are kind and compassionate. They took the time to review my treatment plan with me, when I did not understand what all of the items on the list were. I came to Dr. Alcorn after having a poor experience with my last Dentist in town. Dr. Alcorn is kind, but also does not sugar coat things (no pun intended). She tells you what's wrong, why and how it can be fixed. Dr. Alcorn's prices are competitive as others in the area, which is nice. Her office worked with my insurance to cover what they could and helped me understand the charges that I had left over. read more

When my mother needed some emergency dental work done, we opted to go from our dentist of 20+ years to Dr. Alcorn. In addition to her thoroughness with the assessment and procedure, what most impressed our family was the dedicated support staff. Elizabeth (not the DDS) is absolutely amazing--she genuinely cares for both of my parents having made house visits to check on them (who does that anymore?!) and she always responds to messages within the day. Living five states away is difficult when your parents need help but I rest easy knowing that Beth is looking out for them. read more
