I had the best dental experience at Ivy Dental. I've had some terrible dentists in the past, and Ivy was a breath of fresh air. I decided to make the switch after my previous dentist found out I was a grad student. At each cleaning, he ventured to prove his knowledge of philosophy while yanking my teeth around and making my gums bleed. What's worse, he managed to incorporate golf metaphors into all of his existential insights. Ivy was a radical change! The hygienist was thoughtful, asking about gum sensitivity and offering me glasses to prevent eye strain... bright ceiling lights are so uncomfortable. The cleaning was precise and effective, and the dentist and hygienist explained all the information I needed to know in a respectful and confident way. I felt good about asking questions and expressing concerns. My questions were taken seriously and the team wasn't defensive about my concerns. Overall, I could tell the clinic was clearly interested in care, not only procedure. Practically, it is environmentally friendly and they have a dental savings deal for people like me without insurance. Who would have thought a dental cleaning could make my day? I had a wonderful first experience at Ivy Dental. Paula, my hygienist, was extremely thorough, kind, and professional. Her cleaning was very well done, from my layman's perspective, and she was conscientious about my comfort throughout. She and Dr. Schaap both pegged me as nervous (hadn't been to the dentist in like four years!) and alleviated the tension with humor and lack of judgment. Yet they were also frank about what I should keep an eye out for going forth and how I can take better care of my teeth. I would say that if you want to have a dental experience that is straightforward and professional without condescension, overbearingness, or pressure, this really is the place to go. Previously my dental visits have scared me away from making regular appointments (even though my teeth are pretty normal), but I scheduled my six-month right away and intend on sticking to it. Efficient, knowledgeable and friendly are the words that come to mind when I think of my visit to Ivy Dental. I came in with symptoms and I left with a plan that would potentially alleviate those symptoms. Most importantly, I didn't have to suffer through ANY upselling. So the dentist didn't try to sell me on pulling my wisdom teeth (usually unnecessary) or getting fillings for non-cavity holes. That alone will make me come back. I came back with my 5 year old son to make sure that his adult teeth were coming in well. The dental hygienist and the dentist were both knowledgeable and friendly. They allayed my concerns with data rather than empty reassurances. The dental hygienist was a rock star - she handled my son's youthful exuberance perfectly by giving him a job (I.e holding Mr. Slurpee) and answering all his questions w/out being patronizing. My long time dentist recently retired, so I went shopping for a new one. On the recommendation of a friend, I tried Ivy Dental. Yesterday I had my initial visit which usually means a cleaning and a first exam. But my first appointment was a little more complicated for two reasons: (1) I have mobility issues and each visit away from home is a consideration, and (2) an oral surgeon has already inserted implants, and I needed to have impressions made for my new teeth. Ivy Dental was kind enough to do both the cleaning and the impressions during my initial visit. I'm sure that coordinating this visit caused some headaches in the office, but they never let on if it did! Each person I encountered, from my first phone call right through the procedures, was super cooperative and helpful. Quick, Thurough, and Friendly Just went to my first check up and cleaning at Ivy Dental and it was the best experience I've had with a dentist. There was no wait time when I arrived. The hygienist, Christy, was friendly and explained what she was doing as she did it, good information to know which teeth to pay special attention to. However, she didn't try to have a conversation with me while my mouth was full of dental tools, something I have experienced with other dentists. After a quick x ray the dentist, Dr. Harris came in to check on me and look at my x rays. She asked if I had any concerns and then gave a thurough answer to each, showing me in the x ray what the cause of my concern was and what it meant. I was very satisfied with my visit and plan on returning in 6 months for another check up. read more

It has been years since I went to the dentist because of a tremendous fear I have for sitting trapped in the dentist chair with sounds of destruction happening all around you. I was assaulted by a student and received a chipped tooth as part of the horrific experience. I selected Ivy Dental because they accepted work men's compensation insurance. Boy was I glad I did. My dentist was so pleasant, knowledgeable, and patient with me. I heard the whirl of a drill, but not once was I ever in pain or scared. First visit to Ivy Dental this afternoon and I highly recommend. I'm new to the area and broke a filling three days ago. Ivy Dental was recommended. They found time to see me right away, and now I also have a regular cleaning scheduled in three weeks. The intake person took all the right info (on reusable laminated intake forms) and took care of communicating with my insurance and former dentist. Friendly, professional staff and they even play good music in the waiting room. In a possible dental emergency I really appreciated their fast support. My visit to Ivy Dental today to have two missing fillings replaced, was the best thing that happened to me today. I was scheduled to have one replaced, but another filling fell out since my first and previous visit. I am terrified of a dentist's needle, yet I never felt the prick and pressure I expected. When Dr Harding said, "We will wait for the numbing," I was still waiting for the shot. The filling process itself took less than ten minutes for two teeth. After a cleaning and a polishing(mmmmm smooth teeth), I was out the door and my numbing had worn off and I had no pain whatsoever. I found Ivy Dental through my insurance website and I'm glad that I did. I would definitely suggest Ivy dental to any students as I was seen right away and was able to get in and out of my appointment and right back to class. The dental hygienist and Dr. Harding were both friendly, professional, and informative. They explained every question I had and everything that they were documenting. I have had previous dentists take advantage and suggest treatments that aren't necessary, and was happy to hear that Ivy Dental was not interested in over-treating to make money. I am a person who would rather clean toilets than visit the dentist. Having said that, going to a dentist is a hygienically responsible act, and one that should not be avoided. Everyone I encountered in my first visit to Dr. Harding's office was welcoming, respectful, and professional. Kristy, the hygienist, was calm yet thorough. The calm I truly appreciated. I also appreciated Dr. Harding's "wait-and-see" decision regarding further necessary, dental work. The absolute best experience I have ever had with ANY medical professionals. I chipped my front teeth and was very worried because my usual dentist is not in Virginia, but Ivy Dental took me the next day! The truly remarkable part of going to Ivy Dental was the patience, respect, and genuine care provided by Dr. Harding as well as the entire staff. After my first visit, for a cleaning, I'm really happy with Ivy Dental! The practice has a small and friendly feel, while very professional and knowledgeable. I've always had pleasant experiences here! All of the staff are friendly, and they care about your comfort. My hygienist, Paula, does a great job and always takes the time to explain any issues that she sees or areas that I might be missing. She is also gentle, which is a huge plus! I recommend Ivy Dental to people all the time! It is a small office with caring, attentive, and kind staff who are invested in their work and have been there the entire time I've been going (I always consider length of tenure a great measure of employees happiness!). I have been to Ivy Dental before for an exam and teeth cleaning and always been pleased, but today was the first time I had gone to get a filling. At the end of my visit I had to ask if there had been some kind of dramatic improvement in dental pain management in the last 3-4 years.
