Redwood Empire Whiskey Bar absolutely delivers--this place is the perfect mix of great whiskey,…read moresolid food, and a really cool, laid-back atmosphere. From the start, the vibe stands out. The space is really spacious with that clean, industrial feel, and it's incredibly comfortable to hang out in. Between the big windows and views into the distillery, it feels elevated without trying too hard. I also did the tour, and it was fantastic. Getting to see the distilling process up close added a whole new layer to the experience and made everything you taste feel more intentional. The whiskey selection is seriously impressive. I went with a tasting flight, which was a great way to explore their lineup--from smooth, approachable pours to more complex, higher-proof options. You can tell a lot of thought goes into both the whiskey and how it's presented. The cocktails were also a highlight. Super well-balanced and not overdone. The Old Fashioned-style drink I had was spot on--clean, strong, and exactly what you want at a whiskey bar. Food-wise, everything hit. The oysters were fresh and paired perfectly with the drinks, and the hot dog + tots combo was simple but done really well--definitely exceeded expectations. Overall, this is one of those places that works for any kind of visit--whether you're diving into a full tasting or just stopping in for a drink. Great space, great whiskey, and an experience I'd absolutely come back for.

Tasting room employee Markus is a shining example of why not everyone is suited for a customer…read moreservice role. I watched him be incredibly rude to multiple customers; yelling at them to get in line, brushing off their questions. My husband and I inquired about a walk-in barrel tasting, and he said he would see about getting us in ONLY if we signed up for the whiskey club under his name. We opted to order drinks from the bar instead. Later he came up to our table and asked loudly "DID YOU FILL OUT MY FORM?", when we said no he replied "I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO GET INTO THE TASTING." It was beyond absurd. I have supported Redwood Empire for years through my local stores. I reached out to the brand via their website about this experience and never received a response. Thankfully there's no shortage of distillers in northern California with quality products and better customer service.

Vallejo Brewing Company felt like an epic example of missing the point…read more After a glorious day of beers up in Santa Rosa, my friend & I added 1 last impromptu beer stop since we would be driving past Vallejo. We're beer nerds who homebrewed for years & are always interested in checking out breweries we haven't been before. Pulling up on a quiet Sunday evening, plenty of immediate street parking was available. Walking in, it's a great looking space. All the brick & wood makes a warm, welcoming vibe. Signage & art looks like it was done professionally by a graphic designer. & service was courteous & helpful. That's all well & good & all. But the beer... 1st off, we were informed there's no taster pours/ flights or any smaller pours, at all. Full pints. Period. Alright, fine. We sampled a good number of splashes to try to decide what to get. From my perspective of a beer nerd who homebrewed for years, & has done sensory, all the beers tried were off. My friend agreed. We eventually settled on a pils as being the least objectionable. So, while this place looks great, the beers were not. The raison d'être of a brewery is to make proper beers. To not fulfill that, 1st & foremost, is missing the point.

My favorite lunch order is the Chicken Caesar Wrap - perfect ratio of chicken, lettuce, cheese, dressing, and croutons. The wrap is always well constructed and never falls apart mid-consumption. When I moved away from Vallejo, I thought about this wrap often. For dinner, the wings are always a solid choice - korean bbq, bbq, buffalo - all equally good. The wings are a good size, an even mix of drums and flats, the chicken is always moist and the sauce ratio is perfect. Best wings in Solano County. The M.I.B.C. Burger is another favorite, always cooked as requested, the meat is super flavorful and the toppings - cheese, onion, sauce, and arugula fit perfectly between the brioche bun. This is also served with fries - always served the right amount of crisp. For beers, I prefer to drink the War Bond. However, I can vouch for the fact that all of the beer here is good. Also, all of the staff here are super friendly and helpful. Best neighborhood bartenders, best views of the sunset. We are lucky to have this spot in Vallejo.
