I'm so disappointed with Chau' s service this time. I've been to her several times, and she did well. I wouldn't write this review if she didn't charge my sister's $100 for her bad service. So, l I recommended my sister who wants to dye her hair to go to Chau. My mother made appointment for mysister with Chau and she told my mother to go to her house for the service. I'm not sure what color my sister wants but it involves bleaching her hair. Chau damaged her hair! Almost half of my sister's hair fell off her head. Chau fixed it by color it brown and did hair extension for her. But she still charged $100. If I were there I wouldn't pay. My mother didn't know and felt pressured to pay. Why would she charge money when she offered a bad service and damaged someone's hair? My sister is very sad and I'm sad too because I recommended her to go to Chau! read more

Man did it take some sleuthing to find this place. I say this because on three separate occasions I've stopped girls out and about in the Westminster area to ask them where they got their awesome haircuts and every time, they said some variation of, "Adam in Little Saigon, at a salon off Brookhurst." I figured, oh, no problem, I'll figure it out. So after some deep investigative work (which consisted of me googling "Adam" with "hair salon" and some other key words I can't remember) voila, John Q. Salon came up and it hit me, "Yes, that's it, that's the name someone mentioned I think!" I hightailed it there and walked into a stylish salon a few doors down from the not-so-stylish 99 cents Store. A petite hairdresser with shocking platinum locks looked up at me and when I asked for Adam, she had the expression of, "Oh another one for Adam." I sat down on the couch and realized I was surrounded by gorgeous Vietnamese women, all waiting for their hair to be done. Seriously if I were a guy (or gay), I would totally come in here every week for a cut just to check out the pretty girls. It was one after another! After asking how much hair I wanted off, Adam sectioned my hair and ... began flat-ironing it. Whathe? Shouldn't I get a shampoo and then he'll cut my wet hair? Nope. He just flat-ironed the hell out of each section of hair before cutting it. Vertically I might add, and not across with his scissors. I had no clue what was going on, I just kept thinking, "Oh well, my hair grows fast." He took awhile. About half an hour or 45 min. later, he was done and my hair was straight as a sheet. It looked OK I guess. (My friends complimented me the next day) I don't know what it is about Asian hair salons, perhaps Vietnamese in particular, but damn they love their flat-iron action. When I was in Vietnam two years ago, that was all the rage. Women didn't get blowouts, they got flat-ironed. The flatter and straighter, the better. Personally, I hate the look, mostly because I have thin hair so it feels like my hair fell out or something. It was $25, half the price of mainstream salons. I wished I had a shampoo, that's one of my favorite parts about going to get my hair cut. I headed straight home to shower and get rid of the straightness but it was persistent. I was disappointed to see that the flat-iron made my hair seem longer when he was cutting it so my hair was a lot shorter than I had wanted. I've long held onto the belief that Little Saigon is the best kept secret for great and affordable hair salons that were just as good as the Toni&Guys and other swanky joints. I recently went to John Q for a haircut and just felt like writing a review. I'm usually in a hurry so I don't have a favorite stylist to make an appointment with, so when I arrived I was assigned to Ben. I had a short bob haircut and wanted a long pixie. I showed him pictures of what I wanted for my pixie cut (the front view and back view) and he did an amazing job. At first he uses a razor, and goes back with scissors to add some textures. He gave some advice of how to style it, and he cuts at different angles for you to see at every angle. He does narrate what he's doing as he's doing it, which to me is a good thing. and according to our conversation, he's had 12 years of experience in the U.S, total 15 years. I do hear a lot of great things about Chau and I've witness her work on my friends and they are as amazing as most people have posted, but yes still beware of her scissor-happiness. Yeah it's true that they are not professional or appear friendly in front of customers - they're on their cellphones while working, don't greet you coming in...but at least they're good at cutting hair. read more

Got my hair cut on Sunday with practically no-wait. My long hair (bra-line) was lobbed off to shoulder length. Cost $30 + tip. It was also shampooed prior to the cut. So I got referred to this place here by someone who specified Chau, the owner. I called ahead to make sure if they could take me but no one picked up the phone. I decided to make the trip there anyways since I lived close by. I arrived at 10:30 and one of the stylists told me Chau is not here yet so please take a seat. Within 10 minutes or so two other customers came in saying they had an appointment at 11. It was already 11:10 and Chau still did not arrive. By 11:30 she came in and told me to wait, not offering me another time to come back or setting up an appointment. I waited till 12 to finally be seated. She briefly asked what color I wanted and I showed her the picture I took. She didn't explain further what she was going to do other than go to the back and started mixing dyes. Then she applied it and had me wait. I did not like how I had to constantly ask her what she was doing and how long I had to wait. When she was done, I told her I did not like it and had it fixed a second time but still not to my full satisfaction. In the end I had to dye my hair 3 times to be acceptable for my sister's wedding. Just got my hair dyed from John Q, the result came out was amazing. Nhung the hairdresser and the other crew member did a wonderful job. I wanted to dye my hair gray, but due to the red pigments in my hair follicles, it hard to turn it from black to Gray, but they patiently repeating the process of bleaching and coloring my hair until I found the right tone that I wanted. I've been meaning to make this review for a while. Several months ago, I used to be a frequent customer here. One day as I'm getting my haircut (not done exactly the way I wanted it, but it's fine), I go up to the register to pay. I don't know about everyone else out there but i'm really really REALLY anal about the way my hair is cut. It took a long time but I think i've finally found that one hair stylist that gets it right. Tin is his name and let me just tell you he's always gotten my hair cut right :o) He's very precise about the cut and won't rush just because there's a bunch of people waiting for a hair cut. The cost for a women's hair cut here is $20 which isn't too bad. They used to wash your hair first before they cut but now it's straight to the chair. I suppose you can stil get your hair washed but I think there's an extra charge for that. All the stylist here flat iron their clients hair before they cut...wierd but whatever works for them i suppose. Walk in customers are welcome but I highly suggest that you book an appointment. Oh and if you're expecting a warm greeting when you walk thru the door...forget about it!! I've been going here for the last 6 years and for a salon in Westminster, in terms stylish cuts, they're pretty good. I've probably tried every hair stylist there, although they're all good, I've been going to Jeannie. Jeannie. If she didn't work at the salon, she's be a great worker some where else. Can you say coffee shop? Not a bad thing. She's really good at cutting hair especially if you explain to her what you want. Be verbal though, don't sit there and let her guess how you want your hair to be cut, bring a picture if you have to. Being her regular, all I have to do is say, "The usual please", and she'll know exactly what to do. Her technique is really good. She's doesn't get scissor happy at all, so don't worry about your hair being thinned out too much. She'll check your hair at different angles to make sure that your hair flows and blends well together. If something looks fine the way it is, just let her know. She's definitely not a talker, a couple questions here and there, but she likes to focus on your hair and not your personal life. Oh, she does like to check her phone and herself once and awhile though, no big deal. The salon itself, aesthetically is not that great. Friendly? Not really. They like to stare at you when you walk in. But no worries! You came to get a good hair cut, not make friends right? My favorite hair salon for more than 10 years. I always go to Chau for all my hair needs and she never disappoints. She's the only one I trust to cut my very thin hair and layer it to make it fuller. Even when I moved away, I waited until I came back home to get my haircut from Chau. She even taught me how to make my hair fuller and prevent breakage. its a great place to get a nice trendy haircut. the salon is kind of a hole in the wall in the midst of the garden grove/westminster vietnamese area. they are somewhat hidden in the 99cent plaza. the workers are a bit older, but "try" to stay with the trends. i've had a few friends tell me that they get their haircut there so i tried. i got the lady with the short, platinum blonde hair, (chau i think her name was) and she straightened my hair in order to cut it. I was a bit confused since you typically get a shampoo but i guess it works either way. the cut was good. she did exactly what I asked her to and well. she took her time and made sure i liked it. my first experience was so pleasant that when i made an apptment early one wednesday morning to get my hair dyed and highlighted, i expected to be just as happy. I showed up at 8 but she was no where to be found. there was no phone call nor was there ANY indication whether she was coming or not. after waiting 30 minutes with no word, i ended up going to another salon i heard of not too far away. This review is strictly for Loc Pham. He has been the only one giving me fresh clean cuts for over 15 years now. Although he hasn't been working at this salon for long, I follow him wherever he goes. I drive 15 miles just for him. It seems that he is the only one that can give a clean consistent cut every time. It seems hard to find a barber or specialist to cut Asian hair. My hair always ends up being longer on one side, then he cuts tat side...then my other side ends up being longer...so it goes on for awhile unitl my hair is on my ear level!
