I still think that John is competent, and I adore the eccentric people in his office. However, as word of his great tax preparation services has traveled, he's become significantly busier during tax season. We were accustomed to waiting an hour or two past our appointment time, but it has increased to six hours or more in recent years. The final straw was when my husband waited until 2am to finally be seen. Additionally, the office is packed with people having their taxes prepared, and there aren't privacy screens on the preparers' computers or really privacy in general. You are maybe two feet away from a stranger who's simultaneously having their taxes done. Social security numbers, income and other personal details are in full view of surrounding people, as well as the conversations about these intimate details. We have since moved on from having our taxes prepared by his office. We truly miss John and his wisdom, but he has let greed dictate his business decisions. read more

It seems there's only one person who can actually File your taxes there. Had an appointment 2 weeks ago and got all of my paperwork done just to be told I'd have to wait a few hours for the guy to actually file them. Today is my appointment day and they called an hour before my appointment to tell me they couldn't get me in until after 7:30. My appointment was at 6pm. Don't really recommend going here. read more

Appointments do not mean you're actually going to get your taxes done at the time you requested. 3 hours late, called to say that I was going to be next. Hour later told that it's going to be a while because you really weren't next. They just wanted to get you there in case you don't mind giving up your entire day for an 830am appt that went well into after noon time when you find out that you really aren't next. After more than 10 years we decided to go somewhere that respects time and money. read more

UPDATE - Bumping them from A-Okay / 3 Stars to Yay! I'm a fan / 4 Stars. I was just in there Sunday afternoon. Little no wait. And new magazines in the waiting room! Lol. Front desk gentleman was so sweet and cheerful. Service by John - excellent as always. That little VCR is still there - but I'm coming to think of it as a bit of a mascot! *********************************************** Okay. So . . . if you're expecting a grandeur setting with cherry stained furniture and those old fashioned green shaded bankers lamps, complimentary coffee, dulcet tones of classical music while you sit in a sumptuously appointed waiting room - this is not the place. Instead - here at John's - what you get is a super busy, super competent CPA in a somewhat disorganized office. My feelings about John and his practice are somewhat conflicted. I was a client years ago and left because John flat out refused to let me claim a dependent child that I had taken temporary custody of. In this case, both parents wrote a letter confirming that I was his temporary guardian - AND one of the parents was actually willing to accompany me to the appointment. Most importantly, I had no romantic relationship (prior or at the time) with the child's parent. But John refused - saying that in the past - he'd had people (usually after a romantic relationship ended) come back and accuse his clients of fraudently claiming these dependents. SO I took my business elsewhere for the last few years - but came back because my last CPA kept changing locations AND raising prices. A couple of years before he questioned my integrity :0(, one of his former employees, Aunt Betty, actually lost my W-2s and all my tax information while I was actually sitting in the waiting room. General consensus was that she placed it in the folder of another client who had left while I was sitting there waiting - but we never found out for sure. So the refusal to let me claim a legitimate dependent back in 2010 was the straw that broke the camel's back. But he must be doing something right - because I'm back. So the cons for this practice are: Front office staff (I'm not sure - but I think it's comprised of lots of friends and family) can be pretty unprofessional, abrupt - bordering on rude - and the appointment software ALWAYS seems to be on the fritz resulting in missed appointments and long wait times. The interior and exterior could use a little updating - a fresh coat of paint, some new carpet, comfortable chairs, television and wifi would be AWESOME. The pros for this practice are: John is very knowledgeable and has been in the same brick and mortar location for over a decade. He is very honest - and will do his best to get you a nice return without letting you claim ridiculous things that will get you audited. His prices are reasonable and he's pretty charming and laid back. I have referred several people to him and they were pleased as well. So if you can get past the knuckleheads at the front desk - who in all honesty - aren't that bad once they warm up to you - they just need some polishing - give John Michael Miller a try! read more

I have been going to John Michael Miller CPA for years! If he's busy, I also work with Susan, she's great. They take the time to recommend ideas for my retirement (IRA, etc.) and tips to maximize my return in the future. As soon as my tax returns are in, I run to the phone and call to make an appointment. My tip would be to make an appointment early in the day, it's worth it if you take time off from work. You will be less likely to sit and wait since they get backed up after 6pm appointments. Otherwise, bring a book and chill. They are worth the long wait. I've have sent many friends to them, and they agree, their accounting skills are superb. read more

I was initially not going to write a review of my horrible service with this company but thanks to Karen, here goes. I was referred by a coworker. Prior to this I had my taxes filed by my dad who was a CPA. After he passed, I have consistently been using the online platforms with no issues. After receiving all my documents, I called to make an appointment. To my amazement the wait was long and the appt time was at 930pm. I was told to call to make sure I didn't have a wait. I finally got a call at 1050p to come on in. We got there and still waited till 1230-1am before we got our taxes done. The above transpired on 03/22-23. On tax day (4/18) I realized I hadn't received my refund. I made a call and as soon as I gave them my social, they transferred me to Mr Miller. It was at that point I realized THEY NEVER FILED IT. He then started to tell me how there were some modifications made in my favor then files my taxes without taking responsibility. What if I didn't call? The crazy thing is although I was too stunned to react, I was not upset enough to leave a review. Today 4/28, after I wasn't able to track my refund on the IRS website I called and was transferred to Kathy. Her nonchalant and callous attitude towards my issue are things run down businesses are made of. I called to make sure my taxes were filed and accepted and to understand why I can't find my info on the IRS website. I held my tongue until she started talking about how they did their part and things weren't their fault. When I started talking about the month it took to file my taxes only after I called she stated that it's filed like I should shut up. I am entitled to voice my issues. Your services are not free. She then proceeds to tell me that I don't know what kind of day she is having and she wasn't the one that made the mistake. She said she is only trying to deal with what's happening now. After I tried to talk to her about customer service, she blatantly asked "would you like me to help you not?" I explained that I needed help but I should be entitled to voice grievances with the company you represent. She then said " I don't think I'm the one that can help you" then proceeds to put someone named Myrna on the phone. You couldn't be more right Kathy, I , my family and friends will never patronize this business again if I can help it. read more

John responded promptly, was up front about his fee, and fit us in almost immediately. When we went to see him, he was engaging, knowledgeable, patient, and thorough in his analysis and explanation. He addressed all of our concerns, going above and beyond what he had originally agreed to discuss. We left feeling like we had a much better understanding of our tax situation and how to deal with it. About a year later, I emailed John about another tax question, and he responded that same night with another thorough explanation that cleared things up for me. So I have yet to receive my 2014 tax refund...14 months later. I have a family friend who is an accountant in TN and I explained my situation to her. She said the best thing to do is have an accountant contact the IRS directly on my behalf. So I went ahead and tried to find some local accountants to help. Of course, I started my search on Yelp and this firm came up first for the Marietta area. I was hoping that this tax situation would also be a trial run for us to find a permanent accountant to use. Well, they said they could do nothing for my situation and told me to just harass the IRS myself. Which is what I have already done...still no refund. Oddly enough, the very next accountant that I called said he would be more than glad to help. And he did. So, there goes my business! read more

Great people. I have owed less or gotten more back than I expected every year consistently. My family takes their taxes here as well. We love it. Folks here know what they're doing. Their edgy, efficient, and real people. Not a bunch of overpriced fluff. Love these folks, they'll take care of you and they have your best interest in mind. I see some folks have had some disagreements, my experience is that I've learned to shut up because they've never steered me wrong. I don't know where else to start except that I had a great experience here and I am definitely coming back next year! John Michael Miller's office were able to squeeze me in for an afternoon appointment on April 17, the day taxes were due!! Yes, they were running behind 2-3 hours behind. And the front desk ladies will call you and tell you to come later if need be. They are polite and nice people. I believe they are running behind because they don't file extensions. At least for me they didn't. I had all of my paperwork there, I assume like most people, and we finished the taxes right there on the spot. The tax preparer took his time to explain everything to me, positioned our chairs and the computer in a way that I could see everything he was doing for his reasoning that I can understand it. He tried to jog my memory to make sure we didn't miss any extra deductibles or credits. Afterwards, the owner John Michael Miller CPA comes and double checks the work. I really feel as if I understand taxes much better and will be even more prepared for next year, and I will be back at their office (probably with an earlier appointment though!). Everyone from the front desk ladies to the tax preparer gentleman to the CPA and other office staff I met were all polite, respectful, and professional. I was treated so well as I was there by myself while my husband had to work. What I also liked about this place is two things: all staff seemed to be happy. They were all working hard, but were able to act as themselves and talk to one another while getting their jobs done. I liked the relaxed atmosphere. Also, the other thing I like is that it is not a fancy place. The people are here to get your taxes done. If you want a fancy place with keurig coffee and tea and carafates and notebooks you can take home with the company's logo on it, if you want to sit at a fancy apple computer on mahogany office furniture, this place is not for you. And remember, you are PAYING for that if you go to a place like that. This office is not about the way they look, they are about their work. And they do it exceptionally well. The price is great! I have a complicated tax situation since I live in GA but travel on work assignments across the US, sometimes in as many as 4 states a year. They "forgot" to file my taxes and only did so after I called to check on the status a week after April 15th. Unprofessional personel, long wait time, accountant seemed flustered and I felt rushed during my appointment. I wish I had read the previous reviews prior to going to them. read more

I am a new business owner and I would not recommend any service from this accountant. They lost all my paper work (bank statements, receipts, etc.) after I paid $600.00 up front to make sure there would be no problems with the IRS. When I came in for my appointment, my wife and I had to get an extension because they did not even know who I was or have any paper work after the accountant change my LLC to an S-Corp and did not even realize he had done it. I paid $150 for the consulting and $600 thinking my taxes were being prepared after our Nov 2016 meeting and another $450 after the extension to make sure the taxes were filed to the IRS. NOW, I am getting letters now from the IRS and the State claiming I owe more money. DO NOT go to this accountant. The good reviews are only from family and employees. I have gotten no response from this office since I asked about my concerns with the extra $1500 I have to pay to the IRS and State, plus the penalties from the extension I had to do because they lost my paper work. No professionalism and have no concerns for making things right. Avoid this accountant. read more
