I live in the SGV so I was hesitant since Steven is all the way in Fullerton but after our initial intake, I was like ok, this is going to work. Steven just makes you feel so comfortable. He gives you suggestions on books and websites to look at and "homework" but never makes you feel bad for not reading the book or doing the homework. It didnt feel like he was just trying to check things off or write notes but more like this is YOUR session so you lead it how you want it, which I love. We talked about my anxiety and depression and we're still working on it but I always feel at ease and look forward to my sessions. If I'm having issues and it's not time for my appointment I'll just text him and he's able to squeeze me in. With a healthcare worker schedule, it's always changing and he's always so accommodating. I love how we can jump on a zoom session or if I want to go to the office, he makes time. I've cried with him and I never felt like it wasn't ok. I highly recommend Steven, don't be afraid because he makes you feel like that ball of tangled Christmas lights (since it was just Christmas) could be untangled with sessions with Steven.

This was long before covid and before tele-visits were available and I literally just didn't have the time to physically go to the therapist's office every week, especially with a baby at home. My office closed back in March 2020 due to covid shut downs. We were suddenly teleworking full time and trying to figure out how to do our jobs fully from home. My then 2 and 3yo toddlers were pulled out of daycare due to fear of them catching covid. Needless to say, things became EXTREMELY chaotic and stressful at home. Trying to juggle being a full time parent with toddlers at home while trying to work a full time job from home has got to be the most challenging thing I've ever done to date. I became very depressed from just being stuck at home all day long with no social interactions besides my husband and kids. Not being able to relieve stress or have any time to relax took a toll and I became more and more unhappy. I got into so many fights with my husband and had so many emotional breakdowns just from pent up stress. I loved being able to watch my kids grow up this past year, but it was definitely not without many breakdowns on my part. I was feeling like such a failure. I confided in a close friend about how I felt earlier this year and she recommended I try out Steven for a free consult. She had gone to high school with him years ago and had started seeing him when she found out he opened up his own private practice last year. I did my research and contacted him for a consult. After our initial encounter, I immediately booked a session. Steven offered televists so I didn't HAVE to drive anywhere, but could if I wanted to since he offered in person as well. With my hectic home/work life, it was so much easier to be able to do televisit. He was so warm, friendly, funny, and seemed so genuine from our initial encounter. I had already done my research and know that he's definitely well qualified in his field. I've been seeing Steven now for about the past 6 months and he's truly lived up to my expectations. Our sessions are always relaxed but productive, he is able to make me feel better especially if I'm already having a bad day. He has given me courage and the tools to understand myself, boost my confidence, and ultimately improved my relationship with my husband and even my toddlers..lol!! Steven is so patient and he truly listens and absorbs everything I tell him. I feel so comfortable talking to him and it makes it so much easier to open up and share my feelings and issues. He doesn't make judgements and is just so easy to talk to. Having been to other therapists in the past, I was able to tell the difference immediately with how Steven approaches his patients. He is way better than the others I had tried in the past. They just didn't seem as warm and caring. I even convinced my husband to start seeing him as well starting next week!! This is a feat in itself since he never really "believed" in getting any kind of "therapy". He's seen the improvement in our relationship and now he's willing to give it a try for his own mental health. It's definitely improved our home dynamics and let's us "resolve" our issues before it snowballs into something bigger. If you've never seen a therapist before, I would highly recommend trying out Steven first. It's worth it!! I've learned that mental health is SOOOO important, especially in this day and age with so much uncertainty and chaos around us.

I also struggled to plan my meals and incorporate an exercise routine into my life. Adam helped me create habits and lifestyle changes that have improved my life tremendously. Every session began with an update on my life. During the first few sessions we looked at my skills and interests. We figured out why my current approach wasn't working. We then tried different approaches until I was able to sustain them over long periods of time. Now they are habits I am proud of. If you have a duel diagnosis I really do not recommend using Melissa as your therapist. Not only did she misidentify the core issue (another therapist agreed that her judgement was poor), she was contacted specifically to do EMDR as she is certified to do, (apparently, by a website that no longer seems to exist) and instead she used a modality she preferred. When confronted, she claimed there were "elements" of EMDR when in fact she used zero bilateral stimulation of any kind, no eye movement, nothing. Having now experienced proper EMDR I can say she misled me and wasted my time. I came to her for an APA-certified, scientifically proven therapy - not a therapy that only has anecdotal evidence. Proper EMDR should only take a few months and this woman dragged out our relationship this way for almost a year. She cost me precious time because she decided she knew best. Not only that, instead of recognizing my family as the ongoing cause of and genesis of trauma, she actively made excuses for them and pulled the very invalidating "but they're your family" reasoning when I was considering pulling away. I found this invalidating and frustrating even before I discovered her dishonesty. She comes from a very actively Christian background which I had no idea about when I hired her and so I am unsurprised that she defended the family unit above her client's best interest. In fact, if you're native or a person of color, you should know she still has her work on a racist, colonialist "mission" proudly displayed on her linkedin. In fact, I noticed that she changed the summary to say that what she was doing there was "home building" which is interesting because months ago it said she was there "church raising" - so I guess my email pointing out the shame of celebrating that extremely problematic thing inspired her to cover her tracks. Pretty gross. So not only does she believe that she gets to decide for her patients despite their specific and repeatedly stated wishes, choosing a non-APA certified therapy over a certified one, she's always believed the white savior knows best. People like her are insidious because they don't immediately present as bad therapists but anyone considering her should be very aware that she comes from a Christian background and she does as she pleases, at least to this POC client, while missing the deeper causes of trauma, focusing only on the surface stuff that she was spoon fed, rather than intuiting the true causes as another therapist immediately did. I want my year back and I will never get it but at least I can warn others.

Note that I make every effort to be fair, truthful and detailed in my accounts and reviews as you can see from my other submissions. I also usually maintain documentation; records, emails and messages to substantiate my claims. About two years ago my fiancé and I engaged Ms Koegl's professional services, primarily to prepare us for marriage (communication skills, conflict resolution skills, adaptation, etc) and to help us best cooperatively manage my fiancés Borderline Personality Disorder or "BPD" which was a challenge in itself. I also desired to work on ways to improve myself and be a better partner to my future wife. I was very willing to accept that I had my own work to do. After all, I had been the one to propose to my fiancé that we seek support for our relationship. After the first session which was largely informative and directional, some of the deeper issues and emotions relating to how the BPD was affecting my fiancé and relationship came to surface. It was quite emotional at times but we trusted Joanne to provide us with understanding and guidance on our issues, to share how best to take care of ourselves and each other, and to work through the occasional episodes that could occur. BPD can be a serous condition and is largely rooted in trauma and fear of abandonment so we were taking this very seriously. At a certain point it became apparent that providing my fiancé private sessions with Joanne might be helpful. I was paying all such costs (joint and individual) and it was not cheap but I was determined to provide our relationship and my fiancé with all the support we needed. After a few months or visiting Joanne, and unbeknownst to me, my fiancé informed me that Joanne had started to suggest that my fiancé end the relationship, that I was a narcissist and that she should essentially 'run'. My fiancé told me that at first she was alarmed by this and actually started to consider if it was true, if I was not who she thought I was. After all, why Joanne would suggest such a thing, behind my back and so secretly. But as we began to talk things out privately my fiancé was able to overcome her alarm and feel grounded with me again. Eventually she expressed every confidence in me again and even stated that she did not believe in her heart that such warnings were justified or true. She felt bad for me knowing that I had selected and trusted Joanne. Joanne NEVER told me she was telling my fiancé such things. Quite the opposite, Joanne and I met privately several times and she led me to believe that she was committed to helping us improve our relationship. All the while, she was advising my fiancé to leave me. My fiancé shared with me the email messages that proved this. Joanne had breached her duty to us, and had betrayed our trust. If Joanne for some reason felt the relationship was doomed, unhealthy or not something she could provide support for, she should have informed me first and then suggested we find another form of support. Never should she have leading me to believe she was helping us reach our goals while behind my back, speaking so negatively of me and undermining the very efforts we were making to be responsible and prepare ourselves for marriage. I see it as a betrayal, a breach of duty, grossly unprofessional and duplicitous. When I subsequently confronted Joanne on the matter, she admitted to such actions. She said she was wrong and regretted her actions and that she misjudged me and that later she realized I was a good man and genuinely trying to do the right thing for my relationship. What a bizarre and troubling thing that was for me to hear. There were sessions that were more intense and emotional than others, but that is where Joanne should have been patient, not judged, and simply seen that as part of the process of uncovering and working with deep feelings, not to turn on me. A therapist has a duty to not rush to judgement after one or two sessions but to allow their clients time to cycle through the levels of emotions, beliefs, history, etc. before an overall assessment can be fairly made. My fiancé and I stopped seeing Joanne and thousands of dollars later, and much disappointment and wasted time and energy, I was left only with the opportunity of sharing with others our story. I see that she has some good reviews and some very poor reviews. Im not here to comment on the experiences of others, but in our case, I deeply regret the trust I placed initially in hiring Joanne to help us. But life circumstances eventually led me to Jacqui, and now I'm actually grateful for the hardships that brought me to her. She's different from any therapist I've ever worked with. Jacqui really helps you dig deeper and look at things in a more honest, meaningful way. She doesn't just tell you what you want to hear or coddle you, because that wouldn't actually help you grow. Instead, she challenges you in a supportive and thoughtful way that pushes you to understand yourself better. I had never heard of ART before and was honestly skeptical, but I was desperate and willing to try anything. Hands down, it's one of the most valuable techniques she has in her vast arsenal of tools to help her patients. The first ART session with Jacqui was about 2 hours, and no specific issues occurred. The 2nd session was a week later. About 30 minutes in, she noticed the ART didn't work as she expected, and her comment about the failure was due to my "language barrier," which I strongly disagree with. Even English is not my first language, I passed 2 most difficult bar exams in the States, and I've been practicing law for the past 12 years in California. Jacqui's instructions are nothing compared to the judges' instructions I have to follow for my work. Jacqui's instruction was basically "imagine your emotions being washed away by a waterfall," something simple and similar to this. However, she told me not only once during this session that the failure is because of the language barrier. She made me feel absolutely terrible, and I had to cut short the session. Eventually, Jacqui admitted that ART doesn't work for everyone but emphasized again my language barrier. We are all vulnerable already when seeking help from a therapist. Now Jacqui makes me feel even worse as this ART doesn't work mainly because of my "language barrier." If Jacqui evaluated that my language barrier is a concern or issue for this ART, she should've noticed it at the first consultation and stopped it, rather than continuing scheduling and charging me $180 per hour for the following sessions.

Havening techniques and other techniques have helped me (someone who defaults to over-intellectualizing) get out of my head and into my body which I've found is imperative for healing emotional trauma. With all that said I'm really here to share my experience with the Neurofeedback training done with Rebecca Turner. Having done so much healing and reprocessing through talk therapy, I still felt that my thought patterns were like a hose turned all the way up, whipping around, unable to catch, and control, soaking everyone around me. The initial brain mapping (which is done first to know what areas of the brain to target for training) reflected with tangible data what I was experiencing inside. Ms. Turner described it to me like "your two hemispheres are yelling at each other" which turned out to be one of the most validating things my brain has ever heard about itself. The neurofeedback training process itself is not as complicated and/or intimidating as the name sounds. If one is doing eyes open training, you essentially attach some small sensors to your head using a conductive goop and watch a tv show while the screen brightens and dims in response to the information collected by the sensors and neurofeedback program. For "eyes closed" training, you listen to lyric-less music while the music adjusts the volume to help train your brain. And it all works. I feel good about myself. Shame is now a passing emotion instead of a state of being. Rumination is down ten-fold as my hemispheres aren't "yelling at each other". My thoughts and feelings don't control me as much and/or send my on a downward spiral. If you are someone who feels your emotions are often become too much for you to handle that even standard therapy couldn't alone help, might I suggest neurofeedback?
