'Doctor Amy' is not truly a licensed doctor in California. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. As a licensed medical doctor scheduling my first session with my wife even I was fooled by her misleading advertising. I was desperate to improve my communication with my wife. As a super-informed consumer I was almost convinced that the fact she received a "doctorate" from newport psychoanalytic institute actually gave her more qualifications than she actually deserved. Here are the red flags on Amy Keller. $300 cash on each visit. I thought OK, lets see if this is for the only first visit. She has 6 positive reviews at the time that I recalled on yelp. Second red flag, she says that most of her patients can bill PPO insurance afterward or superbill. I thought maybe she is smart to not deal with insurance. The truth is she can't get credentialed to bill insurance. Red flag 3. No front office reception. She handles all of her own scheduling despite claims of her being so experienced. Regardless of these red flags I tried with my wife bringing our son Mark with us. I saw that Amy Keller found my attractive on my first session and reflected upon that and why she spent so much time speaking one sided with my wife during the first session. I was pretty much background or a fly on the wall. Thank goodness we had my son Mark there. One unusual thing about Amy Keller is that she calls herself "Dr. Amy". A name like Dr. Amy is really only appropriate with children but I am now starting to question if that is even appropriate for her or whether she should be around any children as well. If Amy Keller's specialty is children and that is how she received her 'doctorate' from Newport Psychonanalytic institute then she should be outstanding with children. My 10 month year old was upset almost the whole visit with Amy Keller. Red Flag 4. No printed out history forms or informed consent or notice of privacy practices. Here is where is started getting dangerous. Red Flag 5. Amy Keller starts having an individual session with my wife without me being present a following weekday. Red Flag 6. She requests my wifes cell phone and texts her beforehand breaking the professional boundary. Red Flag 7. She starts sending my wife emoticons. Initially I thought it was great my wife is getting individual attention. However this is truly red flag number 8, she has not ever scheduled an individual visit with me but had multiple visits planned with my wife. Red flag 9, This individual session with my wife goes beyond the scope of Amy Keller's training and licensing. Here is where the insurance fraud starts to kick in and Red Flag number 10. Amy Keller charges my wife $250 for her session. Red Flag 11. My wife cancels her following illegal visit (it is illegal due to Amy not being licensed and Amy committing billing fraud) and Amy texts my wife saying that this is her one get out of jail for free card Red flag 12. Amy Keller states that I have Asperger's to my wife who is seeking to understand me. Asperger's is a diagnosis that is made by a licensed medical doctor who puts a patient through a series of psychiatric analysis and tests. Red Flag 12 Amy Keller practiced medicine without a license. Red Flag 13 she failed to provide the standard of care in diagnosis of Asperger's. Red Flag 14 she betrayed my privacy by discussing her incompetent, illegal, and damaging diagnosis to my wife. Red Flag 15. Amy Keller does not provide you a receipt for your 'cash services' until you press the issue hard. Red Flag 16. Amy Keller billed for an individual service going outside her scope. Red Flag 17. She uses the wrong CPT codes and ICD codes Red Flag 18. She blames her 'assistant' for not sending me my receipts. Red Flag 19. She states that Asperger's is an personality disorder and quotes the DSM, a medical manual. The truth is that Asperger's has been always classified as a psychiatric or medical disorder. As physicians we are hesitant about any personality disorder classification. Psychiatrists that are residency trained are even hesitant about calling anything a personality disorder. Red Flag 20. I call out Amy on her lack of experience and qualifications to make any medical or psychiatric diagnosis. I then scold her on how dangerous her ignorance is and how it can hurt many people. However, she refuses to accept that she isn't qualified and states that her experience with abused children makes her qualified. Red Flag 21. I call out Amy on how to make an Asperger's diagnosis. She doesn't know. I would expect Amy to be reprimanded by the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Department of Insurance after this complaint is issued. The extent of her malpractice is another story. Red Flag 22. Newport Psychoanalytic Institute is not in Newport but in Tustin. Awesome! A therapist for people who hate therapy. I'm not a therapy person. I don't enjoy it. But my wife and I were having communication problems and we weren't making any progress. We (she) decided we needed to go see a therapist and that (after a few bad matches) we ended up at Dr. Amy's . Dr. Amy is great. She's smart, insightful, easy to talk to, has tons of resources -- all of which I appreciate, but the trait I like most about Dr. Amy is she's effective. Dr. Amy is very versatile. She was able to provide a warm safe environment for my wife to express herself, while simultaneously maintaining my need to have progress and concrete actionable advice. Very quickly we saw results and our marriage has thrived. All this said, Dr. Amy will not coddle you or enable your BS. That's not her job. What she will provide is perspective, tools, and language that can help you repair/strengthen your relationship. You will still have to do the work. Dr. Amy is positive, encouraging and creates a relaxed office atmosphere. She helped me break a pattern of being under an unsustainable amount of stress. For this I am grateful. HOWEVER, Dr. Amy's ability to help was greatly hampered by her unresolved personal issues. She was often unfocused and unprepared during our sessions. She was late more than she was on time, sometimes late by 15 minutes. On several occasions, Dr. Amy did provide extra time at no additional charge, but she later came to resent that and even went so far as to say, "I've tried to help, but it's never enough." Even when Dr. Amy was not late, she regularly took fifteen-to-twenty minutes before she settled in and became present. She often suffered from mental fatigue, trouble focusing, low energy levels, and other physical pain. More than once during our sessions, she contradicted herself, exposing inconsequential social lies. However, the main problem was that Dr. Amy was almost always several steps behind when it came to figuring out the family and interpersonal dynamics that I was working through. Perhaps she was out of her depth. Perhaps she was checked out. It was hard to tell from the minimal feedback I received. If you are looking for a therapist to help you with deep personal transformation, I highly recommend looking elsewhere. Find someone who is more present, more personally in-tune, and less burnt out. read more

There is really no other way to put it: Dr. Amy changed my life. Several years ago while going through a pretty horrid break-up, I decided to embark on the oh so scary world of finding a therapist who could help me get through the tough times. I first tried with another therapist I found on the internet, and couldn't be more horrified from the experience. I talked for 50-minutes to this doctor who spoke only to ask the totally cliché questions of "... and how did that make you feel?" and did little in terms of providing any advice or support. I tried two sessions and quit, deciding that therapy must not be for me. AND THEN, by some stroke of luck combined with finding my [therapeutic] Soul Mate, I met Amy. She is everything you'd never imagine a therapist to be- she's warm, and compassionate, and hilarious, and SO OPINIONATED, and encouraging, and inspiring. And she's a genius. She is, with no exaggeration whatsoever, a life changer. She got me through my break-up, helped me deal with changing friends, leaving my job (and career), encouraged me through my relationship with my now-husband, gave me tools to deal with my not-so-perfect family, and now helps talk me through my fears (and excitement) about having children. How does she do it? I don't have a clue, especially because our sessions feel more like coffee with a friend than they do therapy. I've seen Dr. Amy sporadically, mostly individually but also with my husband. She offers an inspiring blend of positive energy and pragmatism. It might be a false fear, or snobbery, but I dread situations where I feel obligated to take advice from someone who seems well-meaning but not that insightful. My relationship with him had ruined my first marriage, to his mother, and was threatening my current marriage. I had seen therapists before, but found that platitudes about line drawing, tough love and the primacy of attitude over reality were not helpful, at least, not to me. Dr. Keller had the intelligence and flexibility to meet me where I was, to defuse my intellectual defenses without bullying or patronizing. She is direct and firm, but also respectful and has an excellent sense of humor. Over a year we developed a workable compromise where I am supporting my son without being obsessed by him. She also helped me with my marriage, which is flourishing. She is readily available in crises, which my son periodically furnishes.
