It has been a couple of years since I have been here and I was in the mood for some quick Mexican food tonight. Last time I was here (2014), I found the food very salty and nothing really stood out to me. Tonight I ordered the veggie rice bowl with all the fixings ($9.00 and some change), & was super impressed with the freshness and quality of ingredients. The salsas had a nice kick to them, nothing was over salted, and the food was very flavourful. I also enjoy that the veggie items include guacamole at no charge, where as mucho burrito charges for guacamole regardless now. The only downside with my rice bowl is they forgot the tortilla on the side, (the rice bowl comes with a 6'inch tortilla). I was a bit sad as I really enjoy their tortillas and I was looking forward to building a mini burrito with it, haha, but I got over it quickly. The food is very filling, and usually recommend getting the kids size burrito meal deal if you have a smaller appetite (its cheap and fills you up), plus you get chips and a drink on the side. However, I cannot justifiably give this place 4 stars because they were solid. Staff was friendly and the food was damn good. Incredible. John Juan had incredible food with all fresh ingredients. Imagine a local Chipotle where everything is homemade with fresh ingredients. Staff were great and gave some extra chips to my kids - who, by the way, loved watching the process of making their quesadillas and burritos. read more

The service is quick, the food is fresh, the employees are all very welcoming and funny. Plus there is latin music in the background. Overall, my impression is that (1) this establishment is trying to do too much (burgers and burritos?) and (2) the quality suffers. My first impression is that it was like a less-good Five Guys had a baby with a less-good Chipotle. My final impression was the same. I had a burrito bowl and ended up feeling unwell. I'm not sure why or what may have caused it as no item in the food appeared overly questionable and I've consumed all of the types of foods at different times before this experience. We walked in and it was busy! Always a good sign when a place has customers! :-) We ordered a large Carne Asada burrito to share. The half was more than enough for me. I loved their flavours and I will say their mild salsa had a nice kick to it. I can't imagine their hot salsa! Lol The employees seems super nice and we got a box of their cinnamon sugar churros! I haven't been back since the name change, but apparently it's the same owners who decided to leave the Burrito Gringo franchise and branch out on their own. Original review: My husband and I had dinner here recently. For what it is, it's pretty good. Mexican fast food restaurant chains have been popping up everywhere in Ottawa. First Mucho Burrito, then Burrito Gringo. I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before we get a Chipotle's here. Anyway, it's nice to have more options than say 5 years ago when all there was was Taco Bell. I had the small barbacoa (pulled beef) burrito ($6.95) and my husband had 2 tacos ($6.80), a carne assada (steak) and a carnitas (pulled pork). The small burrito was pretty big, I'm glad I didn't have the large one. It had a lot of meat in. I added refried beans, sauteed peppers and onions, cilantro lime rice, medium red salsa and cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheese. All the ingredients tasted really fresh. And for a fast food burrito, it was awesome. My husband really enjoyed his tacos. He got the soft tortilla shell, but you can also get the crispy shell. He said the steak was tender and not tough at all, and the pulled pork was nicely done. Service was excellent. The staff were very nice. We were standing around trying to decide what to get and they were not impatient at all and told us to take our time. After the meal as we were leaving, they thanked us for coming. The food handlers wore gloves (extra points for good sanitation!). I thought that I would definitely come back but shortly after eating the burrito I broke out in hives, so I am allergic to something I ate there. I need to get myself to an allergist pronto! I am so sad about this because I really liked Burrito Gringo and would have liked to come back, but having big itchy welts all over my body is not something that I enjoy. This is of course no fault on the part of the restaurant, so I will still recommend this place to others, I just won't return myself until I figure out what it is exactly I'm allergic to there so I can avoid eating it again. I work nearby and this has become my favourite place to go grab something for lunch. Why? First off, it tastes good. Admittedly, I seem to order the 'burrito bowl' pretty much all the times I go here, but I've always enjoyed what I have. Everything tastes fresh and home made. Secondly, its very affordable and you get A LOT of food for your money. As mentioned, I usually get the burrito bowl and I can barely finish my meal. I once ordered just a small burrito and was surprised at the size. I don't think I could eat a large as I couldn't finish it (and I'm a big guy). John Juan is in a shopping strip mall so parking isn't an issue and I usually get parking right at the door. Even during lunch time, I don't seem to have to wait in line very long either as things move quickly. All in all, I definitely recommend it and I wish they had other locations in the west end. read more

I used to manage a Mexican food restaurant like the one here so I know how one should run with its management and service. And one thing is that the owner is great. We come here and are treated great by the owner, although he seems to had hire new staff that are a few girls and they are completely disrespectful. They have made my very frequent trips a very unpleasant experience. Because of this my friend and I won't be coming back. And after speaking with others, they feel the same. All in all, the head girl that seems to be working there most of the time needs to learn some basic customer service skills and needs to stop bullying the other staff here because it's not what customers need to experience when getting their food, and the staff here don't need that type of hostility in the work place. Food is Fantastic, My only issue is they charge $1.50 or something to get mixed meat on a burrito, is that a joke? 2 scoops of any meat is included. but you want 1 scoop of 2 different meats? $1.50. i think this is the only burrito place in town that charges for mixed meat. I usually always get my burrito's half chicken/half spicy chorizo, but no way im paying them for it. would love to see this charge taken away and would easily make this establishment 5 stars. read more

This location is in the same plaza as Food Basics. I usually take the burrito bowl which consist of rice, beans, your choice of meat, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and cheese. The menu doesn't stop at the burrito bowls. They have tacos and burritos as well as salads. The food as always been delicious and fresh! Would recommend. read more

I googled "best burritos in ottawa" and this place came up. I ordered a chicken burrito bowl and found that the flavour was pretty bland. It was a very filling meal but I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I found their spicy sauces weren't as spicy and had more of a sweet taste to it. I work nearby and always like to treat myself to Burrito Gringo every once in a while. I usually go for either the burrito or the quesadilla and are they ever generous with the portions they give! I'm very impressed with how they are able to fit so much in one tiny burrito....a small gets me very full (plus a churro or a cookie!) All ingredients are fresh which is a huge plus for me. Staff are always friendly and the atmosphere is fun. I love that I can often hear the Mexican music from across the parking lot. Sunday, ordered 2 burgers, large fries and taco salad that's in the shell. My boyfriend and I and the man next to me watched as the prep girl make a couple of burritos had gloves on and practically counted how many pieces of corn she was putting on with her hands then grab some cheese then some corn then cheese..when it was my tum for the taco salad, I said make sure that there's no cheese in the corn because my daughter is vegan, cross contamination, she said she didn't do that as the 3 of us just watched seconds before AND she also used a knife that had meat juices on it to open up another bag of cheese...,I got 1 wilted lettuce on my burger and the pickles had to be thrown out because it was just hard skin, no actual pickle, fries were good, asked for no salt this time, last time fries were really salty. Best is a matter of taste but but some places are special and need to be in the conversation. Go there enough and you'll see chicken on the grill then diced, their greens in a wok sizzling or even the owner all smiles elbows deep with his great staff. Their portions aren't the filler either, a regular burrito is a third meat and stuffed dense with the stuff that's good for you too. Rice, grilled veg, choice of beans, salsa options, cilantro, corn, and more to your taste. Added to that, John Juan is presently Burrito Gringo + burgers. Those burgers start as a lump of fresh seasoned ground beef cooked in a press as you order it. The fries, like what you'd get in an old 50s style burger joint. Everything from Scratch.
