Casa Mexico is a great little spot. The ambiance is excellent when I went on a Friday night with a live mariachi band performing for a couple of hours. I'm not sure how other days compare but I do love live music! The food is reasonably priced and flavourful by Ottawa standards. It's a good spot for Mexican. The shave iced drinks are delicious (sorry forgot a pic) for $5 and the best value on the menu. I'd skip the queso, but the Gordita & tacos were both good. I've had the nachos before and I also enjoyed them. Service is quite slow, so set aside a good chunk of time. Also they gave away my reservation by mistake which wasn't ideal but mistakes happen. Definitely worth trying and I'll be back.

How have I not written a review yet for Casa Mexico?! I've only been once in person a couple of years ago, but have ordered a bunch for delivery over the last year and a bit. When I was there in person, the first thing I noticed was the bright and colourful decor. The night we went happened to be really quiet and our server was super attentive. He told us a bit about the menu and helped us pick out some dishes to try. My friend and I shared the guacamole and chips and added chicharron (pork rinds), and while they were all good, we could've eaten those chips plain all day. I also got a lengua taco and a mole tamal for appetizers - more on those later. I got the ceviche Acapulco as my main (I don't think it's on the menu anymore), which was tomato based and had peas and carrots, and it was much sweeter than I expected and so I couldn't have very much of it. We also shared the churros with condensed milk (came with two), which were a lot crispier and not at all doughy, but great end to our meal. Since I've been ordering delivery and especially during the pandemic, I've definitely stuck to my favourites - tacos, tamales, elote, and the occasional tostada or gordita. Guess I love the street food! I think they have 15 different kinds of tacos with gluten-free options. I've tried all of them, and I usually switch it up because they're all great, but my favourites are the pastor (pork adobo with pineapple, cilantro, and onion), papa con chorizo (homemade pork sausage with potato, refried beans, and cheese), lengua (shredded beef tongue with cilantro, onion, and tatemada sauce), pescado (battered fish with pickled onions, chipotle-mayo, cilantro, and lime)l, and quesabirria. They started doing birria tacos recently-ish, and even better for a cheese lover like me, quesabirrias, which are tacos that not only have the delicious chile and spice stewed beef with consommé, but also adds melted cheese. DROOOOL. The tacos come individually wrapped in tin foil for delivery, which isn't the best environmentally, but does keep the food warm and filling enclosed for each taco. I don't think I've placed an order with just one tamal and usually get at least two or all of them - mole (shredded chicken in mole sauce), rajas con quest (green pepper and cheese in mild red sauce), verde tamal (shredded pork in medium spicy salsa verde), and vegan (mixed veggies, beans, and epazote). I do love mole, so I might get a mole taco as well, but I think the vegetarian rajas con queso tamal is my favourite (did I mention I love cheese?). They always come steaming hot, too! The tostada is a nice change from the tacos, especially in texture because they're baked crispy, rather than the soft tacos. They can be a bit more filling as well, just messier to eat. They're gluten-free and they have a vegetarian and vegan option as well, with potato, tomato, onion, and jalapeño, or you can get shredded chicken or beef. The gorditas are also gluten-free and stuffed with either carnitas (shredded pork) or chicharron prensado (pressed pork rinds). Definitely not the ones you may have had at Taco Bell! Can't forget their elotes (ear of corn that's steamed here, not grilled), which I can never place an order without. They use a chipotle mayo and I think Tajin with the cheese. It's perfect, I always crave it, and I could eat SO many, but have to stop myself. They also now have a mangonada, which is a sweet, spicy, and tangy mango smoothie with Chamoy and Tajin. I'll definitely have to try it next time!

    Taco and Gordita with carnitas

I found it good but no where within striking distance of being fabulous. I've had a lot of Mexican food during the 20 years I lived in California and sorry but I've had better for considerably less money. For $50, we had a taco, a Gordita, a bowl of soup and 2 lukewarm teas. On the positive side, their carnitas, despite being on the dry side were very tasty and I had a generous amount on my taco. My husband really liked his soup as well. Can't say I was wild about the gordita. Our server was very nice and helpful. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't rush back at their prices.

I had lunch here with a girlfriend today and we both really enjoyed it. The place is super colourful and has lots of Mexican paraphernalia like the masks that Mexican wrestlers wear, sombreros, day of the dead skulls, etc. Staff were really nice and so patient with us when we were so indecisive. I finally decided on the Comida Corrida ($20) which is essentially a combination plate. It's only available Monday-Friday and you get a drink (horchata or tamarindo), tortilla soup or cactus salad, 4 mini tacos, and a dessert (selection of cakes or cookies). My friend got a small tortilla soup with chicharron ($6) and the Pollo Asado ($20), which was half a roasted chicken, rice, refried beans, salad and tortillas. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal. It was my first time having cactus and the cactus salad was interesting. The texture was a little slimey for my tastes, but it was not unpleasant. It tasted to me like a cross between marinaded red peppers and marinaded eggplants (you know, the stuff you get in antipasto). I do love trying new foods, so I don't regret getting it at all. The tacos were good. They were indeed mini tacos because each taco was about 2 bites, but I liked it that you could try 4 different types. You can pick any taco on their regular menu except the beef tongue and the fish. I got the rez (beef), pastor (pork), carnitas (pork) and papa con chorizo (pork). They were all tasty and I liked the soft corn tortilla shells. I got the horchata, which is a cinnamon milky drink. It was slightly sweet and a bit creamy. I liked it. I really wanted the tres leches cake (3 milk cake) but they ran out so I got the pastel de dulce de leche (caramel cake). It was just a regular cake with some caramel icing (it's like the ring shaped coffee cakes you get a grocery stores). It was ok but nothing to write home about. However, it was nice to end the meal with something a little sweet. My friend liked her dish and said that the chicken was flavourful. She really enjoyed all the different spices and textures in the tortilla soup as well. Casa Mexico is in a strip mall with other businesses. There is some parking out front, but much more parking behind the restaurant. I'm a fan, I would go back for sure :)

    Pitcher of horchata

Standout was the horchata!!! It was so gooddd. Also got the carnitas tacos, tacos al pastor, quesabirrias, and tamales verde. Was very tasty but everything was weirdly dry. Had to ask for sauce. Ambiance was great too and the server fernanda was super nice. Will be coming again, especially since we missed the live music this time.

I came here with a friend on a pretty quiet evening, and we had such a great experience. Our server was so great. He was attentive, gave us great recommendations, and told us about the cool and more lively happenings that go on for other evenings throughout the week. It really felt like such a welcoming and personal experience, like we were part of a family and not just paying customers. So, admittedly Mexican food is not usually one of my favourites but I had a craving and this definitely hit the spot. My friend and I shared the guacamole and chips with chicharron to start. I enjoyed the guac, but honestly I could not get enough of those chips. I don't know what it was, but I was just chowin' down. For my main I had the enmoladas- I had a serious hankering for the mole, and it didn't disappoint. I'm not usually crazy about tortilla, but the sauce definitely helped me get past that and I quite enjoyed it. The rice and beans wer really good, too. The portion was hearty but not overdone, so I felt satisfied but not stuffed... just right to leave room for desert! We couldn't pass up the churros, so we had the choice with condensed milk. Awesome. They were crispier than I had expected, but so flavourful and it really rounded out the meal nicely. One order comes with two churros, perfect for sharing! I really loved the atmosphere. Even though it was a quiet night, the decor and colours really made the place feel lively and vibrant. I would definitely go back again!

    $9 chips n salsa

Disappointing. Because the menu looked great...the people are authentic...and the scene is set correct. The food was subpar. Almost less. We ordered the overpriced chips and salsa. You all know how I feel about paying $9 for this shit. At least they gave us a decent quantity of chips. They just happened to be too thick and we didn't find them fresh. Pico was ok. I ordered 3 tacos. Chorizo (was ok), pastor (was ok), fish taco (awful). Wifey had cheese enchiladas with rice n beans. Was ok. As someone who lived in LA for many years, I'm exceptionally critical of all Ottawa Mexican food. I've been spoiled. Not sure why those who have come here can't duplicate what is made in their homelands. I know you can't compare when it comes to product but most of the key Ingredients seem to be available...the special cheeses and other stuff can be found at some Latin markets. Not sure if they are just Anglofying it for Ottawa taste buds. Anyway - disappointing. I won't be back.

This place blew me away! Plain and simple downright amazing food. This is now our new fave place when we're in the neighbourhood. Which is great because we live a 10 minute drive away! Lol There are few really good and authentic Mexican and South American restaurants left in Ottawa. There are some however, and this one is now added to that list! I had a drink called "Conga" and it's so good I'm going to make it at home. Fresh juices were a pleasant surprise. We had the Queso Fundido for an Appetizer as this was my go-to food when I lived in Mexico. I don't know what cheeses they use here, but there they generally used Chihuahua cheese (from the State not the doggo). This was really tasty with an overlay of mild spiciness. If I had to say anything is that it was a touch (just a wee bit mind) thick. My entrée choice was the chicken Enmoladas and my partner's was the Nachos Casa México and 2 Mole Tacos. So the first thing you notice is that all the flatbreads are corn! I don't know if they even offer wheat flour one. And I didn't care because I was in heaven. I love corn tortillas. I'm not going to list all the wonderful things about all 3 dishes, but everything was basically mind-blowing! The mole sauce was exceptional. You'll just have to find out for yourself! All I can really say is try it yourself! You won't regret it! I promise.

I came on Tuesday evening for their $3 taco special, and was surprised that all tacos (including the ones that are normally $6) are $3! Not amazing, but better than average, and ok for $3 each. I got 3, and was still hungry, so I think 5 (at $15) would have been perfect. I wouldn't have paid $6 for the beef tongue/fish ones, as that's basically the same price as El Camino. I tried 8 out of 9, and the fish taco was definitely the best; it was the most flavourful. I tried cactus for the first time, which was an interesting slimy/tender texture, salty, but pretty good! The pork/chicken ones I found a bit dry, and I had to add hot sauce to each...lucky, because they have 4 different types of hot sauce on each table. The xxspicy one is actually insanely spicy, I tried a bit on the tip of my tongue and it was on fire! I got horchata as a drink, which was rich and milky, and helped pare down the spiciness. Service: was friendly and quick enough, no complaints. She refilled the water periodically. Atmosphere: probably the most fun part! There's an insane amount of decorations, which makes the interior super colorful and fun. The kitchen is also open, so you can watch them at work. Next time, I'm thinking of trying one of their plates, although they looked pretty "typical" on other peoples' tables.

Tasty Authentic Mexican food? Yes!! First of all let me start off with the decor....! Super colorful and fun! Tacos: Went on a Tuesday and it turns out it was Taco tuesday (3$ per taco) instead of the usual 4.5$ to 6$ We ordered 2 chicken tacos and the beef tongue. The corn tortillas are made in house and love them! I had the chicken taco and the meat was very tender. Ceviche: This is a seafood dish! The crispy bread chips complimented the fish well. Not the best ceviche I had but it was good none the less Enchiladas: 3 chicken enchilada rolls served with refried beans and rice -- it was good not crazy excited Tamale: On the flavor side it might have been a little bland Overall food was very fresh and delish!

The added tomatoes were nice. I ordered 3 tacos - the beef barbacoa was fine but the portion of dipping jus was tiny for 3 beef tacos. The best taco for me was the tuna tartare crispy taco. Loved the flavours and the fish was just delicious! My friends had the chicken tacos and said they were spicy but they liked them a lot. However, I did not enjoy the ox tongue taco and didn't finish it. I ordered it because all the reviews about it were so positive, but I didn't like how they just put two huge pieces of meat in a taco. It tasted very gamey and I didn't like the spongy texture either. The piña colada cocktail was yummy - I could taste fresh pineapple and it was very creamy.

However, I ate at countless Tex-Mex places prior to that experience and also since that time and it never happened again. So I decided to live a life of danger and go back to a Burrito Gringo without an Epi Pen, haha! I am happy to report that I had 3 tacos and no reactions :) I like how you can choose between hard and soft tacos, and with soft tacos you can choose between corn or wheat. I got 3 soft corn tacos ($10.75). You can get different meats on each taco, so I got chicken, steak, and pulled beef. At most places the taco toppings are just the protein, salsa, cheese, lettuce and sour cream, but here I was also able to add rice, beans, and sauteed vegetables, hurray! There was just 1 type of rice (lime rice), and sauteed vegetables (onions and peppers), but there were 3 types of beans: refried, black, and pinto. I got the pinto beans. I loved how the tacos were full of toppings. They were super messy to eat as a result, but I didn't mind, I just used a fork. The tacos tasted ok. I didn't get any real strong flavours, it's like the flavours were muted. The food wasn't bland as they used adequate salt, it just lacked oomph in the flavour department. And lemme tell you, they did not hold back on the grasshoppers. I thought that they would sort of be sprinkled on top or something, but nope, they really went for it! It honestly tasted more roasted than anything, and they were whole, so they were crunchy, but other than that, the lime plus the medium and extra spicy hot sauces I got on the side added the most flavour. The hot sauces were vinegar-based, not burn your mouth kind of hot, and had good flavour. The extra spicy was spicy but not overly so. I also tried the carnitas taco and it was delicious. The pork was very tender and juicy. It came with radish, guacamole, fresh salsa verde, and it was supposed to also have homemade pickled onions, but I didn't see or taste any. I believe they make their tortillas in-house, so that added to the flavour of the tacos for sure. I was excited about the tamales (one order comes with two). Every time I order tamales they sort of just come on their own, wrapped. These came served in the banana leaf, but unwrapped and topped with sour cream, queso fresco, and cilantro. They were vegetarian, stuffed with chipil, which I've never had before. It's a leafy green vegetable and Google says it's like a cross between watercress and spinach, and I'd say that's pretty accurate. To my surprise, there was also a big piece of cheese in the middle (lengthwise). As a big cheese lover, I approve haha! The tamales were so, so good. Nice change from what I normally have. My husband had the nachos with chicken - protein was an extra $6.50 but guac (two scoops!) was included. They were also topped with beans, cheese, pico de Gallo, pickled jalapeños, and sour cream. They were the most expensive item (already $20 without the chicken), but they were tasty. My husband's not into guac, so I ate both scoops and I can't complain lol. He got the Mexican Coca-Cola and I got the cafe de olla (Mexican coffee). The Coke is different because it's made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and it comes in a bottle. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I did enjoy this one because of the different spices in it. I also wanted to try the Mexican hot chocolate but they ran out. Next time!
