Unfortunately, it appears that the Docent of the Raney House Museum has taken it upon herself to re-enrich the City by shaking down tourists. We were surprised when the Docent greeted us with a curt, "Each person needs to donate $5 dollars to see the house." All materials on the Raney House say "Admission is free, donations encouraged," and although my family always donates to non-profits like this, our party of five would not have come if we knew it'd be $25 for a 10 minute tour. I guess my Mother thought the same thing, since she put $10 in the glass vase and turned to the Docent to begin the "donation-optional" tour. The Docent stayed silent, seeming content to stand there staring until more money was put in. The awkwardness was so profound my 89 year old Grandfather (it was his birthday) shuffled out of the building. "I'm not married to taking this tour in the first place," he said as he took a spot on the bench outside. My Mother put $10 more in, which activated the Docent like a quarter in a pinball machine. Unfortunately for us, her tour was dry, full of "Did I already say that?"s, included no new information, and did not include the kitchen or upstairs. We walked out of the building 10 minutes later, $20 bucks poorer and feeling like the victims of a scam. If you're interested in Appalachicola history I'd stick to the Dr. John Gorrie State Park or the Orman House Historic State Park.

It's very clear that everybody working here has such a heart and a passion for the reptiles, marine life, animals, birds, that they help in represent here in the community. This annual fundraiser for Gulf Specimen Marine Lab is such a fun way for all of us to try to drum up awareness & support for the mission here while getting to have a wonderful time playing dress up & bidding on really cool things at the silent auction. This year alone in our area they helped take care of hundreds of stunned sea turtles when the weather got well below what it typically is persistently for this area and that mission alone is more than worth heading over for a visit getting to learn about the wildlife in this area and supporting their endeavors! Not to mention the fact that there are so many, very interactive ways for both adults and kids to be entertained here while learning about our local wildlife & conservation!
