Where do I begin?! What a delightful, beautiful experience. This was today, returning to this beautiful, Caring, probably the best Salon in the country certainly in the city. First of all, I know everybody affiliated with this Salon is excellent so I'm going to just tell you about the two typist I had today and again they are all absolutely amazing and so talented. Nicole did my coloring and she knew exactly what I needed done before I even explained in my consultation with her and she did exactly as she promised and I think she thinks even better ha ha! I came in with oxidized gold RG hair and walked out with the most delightful, neutral, beige, exactly what I wanted and it's still at the shiny gold highlights without having it highlighted, in the sun, and even in the dressing room, I noticed it under the lights so it still had that sprinkle of golden blonde as if I was at the beach, but it was beige and just nice and subdued, which is exactly what I wanted. I upgraded to the color choice that contained a whole lot of oils so that your hair will not dry. I'm so happy I did it and it's so worth it and the toner also was at the same company. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for me to post it but you could always call The salon and ask for the name of it if it's something you're interested in having done. Thomas and Ross are still there. I had so many years ago for 20 years! I'm telling you they are all amazing and you will never be disappointed! I was so happy to see Tom but Ross wasn't in today or at least not when I was there. Just wanted to say hello. I then had a haircut by Cameron and I gave him 100% weight to cut it anyway he wanted it as it was below my shoulder, dried out, frizzy, shedding, out of shape past five or six months due to an accident I had and therefore could not attend any Salon. I didn't want him to save any bad hair just to cut it all off! He found a way to keep a little bit of length down to the bottom of my neck, which was ideal for me and he layered gently any hair that was higher than neck length to take off all the damaged hair. I thought it would take three visits months apart and yet he did it all in one visit by just gently layering and of course, cutting off several inches of the bad hair, which I knew I needed done immediately today! Both stylist did an amazing job and both had the most beautiful personalities. And of course, there's the Manager, Vassilio, and I apologize and I will correct the spelling as soon as I see her again! I looked up the directory for over a half hour so I did try to get it correct! Anyway, she is lovely on the telephone and so helpful and just beautiful in person, inside out! The whole entire experience was such such a joy and I had an accident about a year ago and looked forward to this day all year long. It was one of my happiest days in a long time so thank you John Barrett Salon, and those I mentioned and the lovely people I met in passing and the people I knew from a few years back. It's a fairly long review, but I hope it could help some people make a decision and it shouldn't be difficult to know that a salon that was at Bergdorf Goodman all these years, has to be at top Salon! Every year for 10 years (1998-2008) my late husband treated me to a weekend in New York City. Stayed at the Park Lane Hotel and always had my hair done at John Barrett salon. It was colored, cut and creative. It made look ready for High Society. I cannot remember the stylist name but she was American and blonde and and located in the second chair from the left of the front door. This relaxed me as every October for my birthday. Asked the price of a HC when I booked AND when I confirmed. $310.00 is steep, but I agreed to go in. WAIT for it ... I was charged $420.00 for the WORST HC of my life! And mind you, my hair was not even shampooed ( as I had washed it the night before ) I ended up HAVING to go back and request the stylist cut my hair AGAIN! I have been seeing Thomas at John Barrett since 2014 for my hair color -- base roots and balayage. Now, you might call this "punching above my level" (or whatever boxers say -- I only saw Rocky once, even though I am from Philly!) or maybe "dating out of my league. I'm a nice sensible professional woman -- not one you'd expect to spend $300+ on one haircolor splurge. Let's just say if Martha Stewart and I are here on the same day the only headlines about me will be on my own Facebook page! Oh but how JB and Thomas are worth it. My hair, originally red and now sadly mouse beige, white and sandy, is a dazzling explosion of light copper base and bright blonde highlights. It's soft and looks like it might have if nature had dampened the red as it should have. It fades beautifully into a lovely golden blonde and I feel great for 4-6 months. Yeah. That's right! I only do it 2 and maybe 3 times a year! So worth it! I only had one bad experience where I went too soon (3 months) and the highlights were too bright and fried my hair. Be careful if you're playing w mega bleach. The underlayer of my back looks like bride of Frankenstein but i blame myself for going to soon and then washing w strong dandruff shampoo for 3 months. (Can you say "bad idea?" But it's all good. Bottom line: you want incredible color, you go to Thomas. I am not your typical John Barrett client. Like, you can see Martha, Hillary or many quiet affluent nyc or suburban women. I'm silly, outgoing and it is what it is. Haute salons don't always love that but Thomas is always happy to see me and I'll say his jokes are worse than mine, while his color is incredible. LOVE HIM and it's a great experience!!! 20 stars for the thousands of compliments I've received on my "beautiful natural color." Love it. Many thumbs up!!! read more

Well I for one was impressed and had an absolutely wonderful experience this afternoon at John Barrett salon. I'm in NYC on business and was in desperate need of a haircut, and thankfully was able to get in for a cut and style. I walked in and was immediately impressed with how large, clean, and well lit the salon was. What's wonderful is that they give you a robe to wear while having your hair washed and cut to protect your clothes, soooo much better than a smock. The lady who washed my hair was super nice and kept asking if I was comfortable, if the water was too hot, how many shampoos I'd like to have, and how I'd like my hair conditioned. I wish everywhere asked that! Ashley Ohman was my stylist today and I cannot even begin to tell you how wonderful she was. Very nice, very attentive, she listened to what I was looking for and then asked me how I typically wear my hair, where I usually part it, and what I was thinking about having done. All too often when I get my hair cut the stylist doesn't listen, and that is not the case with Ashley at all, she's one of the best stylists that has ever worked on my hair. And I have wicked curly, Mia Thermopolis comb breaking hair usually, to give you an idea of what stylists have to work with. Ashley provided me with really helpful suggestions for upkeep and maintenance and used amazing products. I basically flew in looking like a frazzled hot mess and left with a beautiful Taylor Swift hair style that even T Swizzle would be jealous of. It goes without saying that next time I'm in the city, I'll be coming back and booking an appointment with Ashley. And if you live in the city, book her stat because she works magic. Seriously. This would have been a five-star review if I hadn't had such an unpleasant experience buying a necklace there. It broke as soon as I brought it home and it took more than TWO YEARS to have it restrung and returned to me. The communication from the merchandise manager was absolutely awful and I will never buy a product from them again. Now for the good part---they have the best hair stylists anywhere. I've been a customer for more than five years and have always walked out looking like my hair belongs in a magazine. Their colorists are first-rate as well. Coley is an absolute godsend! I have been with her for years and will follow her anywhere for my color. She does an amazing job at listening to what I want but still making sure I'm getting a color and cut that are well-suited for me. At first, I wasn't impressed. The person who was cutting my hair (Robbie) was 20 mins late and the front desk people (Laura) basically just let me sit there. I finally asked for a coffee (oh yes of course) and they happily obliged. They did want me to put on a robe but I really wanted to wait until Robbie got there. Once he got there, he was apologetic. I then had to wait to get my hair washed (not thrilled about that) -but Robbie did a very nice job shaping my hair (to the neck). He did a beautiful job blowdrying it as well. I was brought over to Joseph to do my makeup (again I had to wait). He made my make up very nice for day into night. During my recent stay in NYC I was in desperate need for a cut - and I was highly recommended by a friend to schedule an appointment with Paul Totilo at John Barrett. She's as particular with her hair as I am and she spoke very highly about him, so I didn't take her word lightly. And she wasn't wrong! My beginning to end experience was incredible to say the least. The salon is beautiful and there's such an appeal about going through Bergdorf's to get to the 9th floor where John Barrett is located. Paul goes above and beyond. He takes his time and makes sure you're relaxed. He's extremely detail oriented, knowledgeable, and he tells you what he's doing and why he's doing it, which I am so appreciative of. I am 4'11, petite, and my face is round; so I'm always looking for new ways to complement my facial structure. His work is simply UNMATCHED, but my overall favorite thing about Paul was his exceptional service and character. He is kind, accommodating, and makes you and your hair feel and look beautiful. (P.S. he also offered me chocolate imported from Belgium.. I mean c'mon!) You can tell he really spoils and cares for his clients even if it's your first time or 100th. For that, I believe that's what makes him amazing! Now, I have no idea what I'll do for my next trim. Guess I'll just have to wait until my next trip to NYC. More than 5 stars for Paul if I could! This review is based on the front of house and management of the salon. The haircut itself was great! I received an amazing haircut today at the salon. When I called to book my appointment I was quoted a price for a haircut. After my cut I walked to the front of the salon and waited at the register while 2 of the 3 receptionists were talking amongst themselves in Spanish and didn't even acknowledge me or apologize that I had to wait. When they finally helped me they told me the price of my service was 70% higher than what was quoted to me on the phone. When I asked to speak with the manager about the bait and switch (mind you prices are not on the website or listed anywhere in the reception), they told me she left for the day and called her so she can speak with me. They had me speak with the manager on the phone in the reception, and then a CUSTOMER asked me to take my conversation somewhere else bc she "didn't want me to ruin her experience" - so I shuttled myself to a back room to have a conversation with the manager. The manager proceeded to defend her staff and didn't even seem to care that her staff embarrassed me - a paying customer! She honored the price of the cut at the rate I received 3 years ago when I last visited the salon. I understand that this is one of the top salons in NYC and people have certain expectations. Despite the bad reviews, I had a gift certificate to this salon, so i said I should give it a try. Scheduled an appt. for hair cut and highlights. Trimming the hair, not using any conditioning, just shampoo cost me $120, and it last it 15 minutes from the minute i walked from the reception for the haircut, until I was sent to pay. I was told the person in charge with my highlights was overbooked, so I was told I have to reschedule. Imagine what a terrible service for such a price and location. Places like this should not stay in business anymore. Is a very competitive world, and these kind of businesses should make room to ones that work hard and are more dedicated. I have to have a real clear understanding what's going to be done. I thought I did... Originally when I met with Alexis she said she was going to put color in my hair, Golden pieces throughout my hair, and said no highlights... Day of service, she says she's going to take a different route and do highlights and make it look pretty. When I asked are we doing partial or full highlights I got a response "we're just going to do what we need to do" (um okay). She did full highlights! Not sure why she couldn't just say it. My hair is super fine, a partial would've been the better route. Also my baby hairs were highlighted on the sides. Yep that got highlighted and it just looks so ridiculously silly, fake, unnatural and cheap. Another colorist agreed with me that it looked bad. I showed her three pictures of what I like in the beginning and None were of streaky bright highlights. I only stressed I didn't want it to look brassy. I was beside myself after looking into the mirror. She said she can fix it and she would go more golden (which was my understanding that's what we were aiming for originally)... here we go again more chemicals... second time looks almost as bad. To make a long story short I really don't like my hair even after a week. I dread looking in the mirror. My hair looks damaged, over processed, now I have frizzy hair (I've never had before). Ends are beyond dry. I didn't expect this. It's completely my fault, I should have left after she said we're not doing what She originally suggested... A stylist should be able to describe exactly what she's doing, partial or full, describe exactly the color she's giving you based on a picture or show you a similar look. I should've been worried when her previous client came up to her and said that that's not the color she wanted, she wanted a honey tone. Ha. When she walked away she made a comment which I wouldn't have made. Sometimes it's better to keep quiet. My scalp itches like crazy especially at night and I have weird flakes. This has been an awful experience. However, I have to say that management handled everything professionally. They tried to fix the situation the next day with another colorist to tame down the streaks. They were beyond courteous and beyond nice! They tried to defend her and said "I should have asked for balayage" but I showed her pics of what I wanted! I forgot the name of the guy who did my blowout but he was amazing so gentle and made my hair look good (given the circumstances). read more

just visited paul totilo again for a little end-of-summer clean-up and felt compelled to update my review -- something i rarely do, but after a few visits to here now, i've noticed something that i think is worth calling out. given john barrett salon's location -- nestled inside the iconic bergdorf goodman -- i can see how some might assume that it only caters to a specific crowd. however, for every woman there decked in hot rollers, pearls and top-to-toe chanel, there's another (like me) who lives in the single-digit streets / alphabet avenues and may or may not be wearing gym clothes (definitely me). the common thread? all of these women are committed to john barrett because it is a salon that truly lives up to its reputation. all this to say: i'm impressed with the balance this salon has created, making it an attractive option for a breadth of clientele. i think this versatility is, in large part, thanks to stylists like paul, who are experts in their trade, but also bring a unique and fresh perspective. all while upholding the professionalism and top-notch service this salon (and bergdorf's overall) is known for. paul has become my go-to for regular trims every few months. to me, it's just as important to have a stylist with a good eye, experience and talent doing these routine touch-ups as it is for a drastic cut. i need to trust that this person understands what i'm looking for (even when i'm not great at putting it into words) and can make the (seemingly) subtle changes necessary to bring my hair back to life. paul has this in spades: i feel like i'm to the point where i just speak to him in charades -- pointing to different areas, holding my hand up to about where i think the length should be while shrugging -- and he just gets it. thank you, paul and all of the amazing staff at john barrett for always making me feel posh and pretty, even when i roll in in sneakers and a hoodie. read more
