Just had the best wine tasting experience at the John Anthony tasting room! Miguel did the pour and, next to the delicious wine, was the best part of our experience. He was extremely knowledgeable about the wine, the history of John Anthony and just all things wine related really. He wasn't overbearing and tailored the wines to our individual tastes. He didn't do a "hard sell"" and let us take the time to really enjoy the tasting. Without hesitation I would have to say it was my favorite wine tasting experience. L-O-V-E-I-T. Can you feel me? Love it. Located on First Street right next door to the Avia Hotel JA Wine Tasting Room is cool, fun, chic and welcoming. We wandered in by happenstance as a result of its location (next to where we were staying) and that chance first wine flight started off what would become popping in to say hello, stopping by to buy and drink a bottle while hanging out and watching the SF Giants, whatver. JA himself seems to be a nice guy and is there every once in a while. He is approachable and enjoys talking about wine and winemaking. The wines are very nice. The Sauvignon Blancs are very good. The Syrah is equally impressive. Helen and Vanessa, both of whom work there, are just absolutely delightful. Down to earth. Nice. Friendly. Vivacious. We stopped in to see those two to say hello and tell tehm our plans for the day just as much as we stopped in for the wine. Those two are wonderful people with whom we expect to stay friendly with for a long time. read more

The servers chatted with us about college football as much as their wines. I learned about their product placement on Entourage. We tasted different vintages of the cab. Overall amazing experience. While the wine we had was good, the service was unacceptable. First off, $10 for one 2-ounce pour is ridiculous. I don't care if you're in Napa or Paso or Willamette. It's stupidly overpriced for what was a just a good bottle of sparkling wine. Second, the server failed to set out a third tasting glass and rather than admitting that he may have made a mistake, he instead accused a member of our party of stealing a wine glass. When another member of our party joined who was in the industry, he insisted on her proving she was. It's clear whoever runs the wine room here doesn't like women as he treated like we were a bunch of 20-year old sorority girls (4/5 of us were 50+). read more

The new downtown Napa is coming alive. JA wine tasting room and lounge is great. Awesome wines, nibbles and company. The staff is friendly, fun and eager to show you a good time. The bites are yummy, and did I already say the wine is awesome. Two off the hook Sauvignon Blancs, one 100% steel barrel fermented, and one 80/20 stainless/oak. Both great. Awesome Syrah, one of the best in the Napa Valley, and some amazing Cabs as well. Oh, dont forget to try the late harvest Sauvignon Blanc too. Different and tasty! Next time you are downtown Napa, even if its at Midnight, you can wander into John Anthony's new tasting room, since they are open until 2am! What? In Napa? Yes! I love it! This was our 3rd stop..its very pretty and cool at night..dim lights, cool furniture, just a cool vibe. chelsea was our host that night and she was awesome. Mu hubby and i did both pairings. I'm not sure what we loved more the superb wine or the very knowledgeable Miguel who captivated us for more than an hour. My favorite is always Pinot noir and I can honestly say this is the best Pinot noir I have ever tasted in my life. We even loved it so much we shipped some home. Miguel is so knowledgable and so passionate about what he does and John Anthony's mission that everyone in our party of nine were captivated by his knowledge. We learned so much about wine and it was the perfect last night of our Napa trip. We can honestly say we tried a truly superb one of a kind Napa Valley wine. read more

Great wines, great atmosphere, and outstanding service! Located right on the main drag in downtown Napa, this is a neat stop that is easily accessible - no reservations required! (On that note though, I'm not sure if they require reservations for larger bookings). Minimalist decor - comfy couches, bar, cocktail tables - take your pick. The tasting room is not your traditional winery tasting room, but rather set up to look like a lounge, which would make it a great spot for a late night glass of wine! The wines? Fantastic (the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc & Syrah were my favorites), and our host - Kenzie - was extremely knowledgable and friendly, and made for a very pleasant visit. Definitely will be stopping here again next time I'm in downtown Napa! read more

Great service and even better wine... Did you think that was possible? I shared a Napa Valley tasting: 2 whites and a red. It was a perfect tasting for $15 (no waived tasting fees with purchase, but some reasonably priced wines that help offset this fact.) I recommend buying the off menu Butter (Chardonnay), Jam (red) and Toast (Champagne) if looking for a creative gift. I personally got the Lloyd Chardonnay, Butter Chardonnay and the Napa Valley Cab. read more

First time here at a recent event and I was blown away! First of all, the atmosphere is sleek sophistication without the hype. The crowd was fun and the tasting staff was both personable and knowledgeable. They clearly enjoyed being there just as much as we did. And then, there was the wine! OMG - sleek, silky, well-balanced, and dare I say sexy! Nick P. called them off the hook and I must say I agree whole heartedly. I will definitely recommend that my tour guests who stay in Napa Downtown check this place out. They will not be disappointed. This is such a chic bar in a cute little section of town. The staff is friendly and above all, informative. The decor is clean and gorgeous - and most importantly, does not distract from the FABULOUS wine. While its after-hours downtown Napa vibe is so worth checking out (SO worth it) the wine is the focus and best part of this place. For all bars, i like when the proprietor is there - nice to see JA himself pouring on occasion. This is THE spot to go after a dinner with a crew of people who are just not ready to go to sleep. Some of the best wines that I've ever tasted. The harvest wine is a great sweet wine to have with dessert. My favorite red is the Syrah and my favorite white is the Church Vineyard. I met Jeff a week before and he said that if I return to let him know. I let him know and he put is in the tasting room with some cheese. The atmosphere is excellent--contemporary chic. A tasting room that opens till 2AM? Fabulous! Now I don't have to cram my day between 10AM and 5PM. I stumbled upon this place while staying at Avia. It's a relaxed atmosphere with cozy seating, friendly servers, and best of all, food. I like to linger over a glass of delicious wine and standing around a bar with some stale breadstick is not my idea of the ideal tasting experience. I want to feel welcome and not rushed. John Anthony scored in that respect. They offer a wine and cheese pairing that was lovely in addition to table and chairs. How novel! The best pairing was the merlot and Barely Buzzed cheese from Beehive. In fact, this was one of the best cheeses I've ever had. Yes, this is a little more expensive than your average tasting but it's really nice to have something to nibble on along with your wine. It makes the experience much more pleasant and authentic. Merryvale also offers a wine and cheese pairing but I haven't been to that one. I'm giving it 4* because I enjoyed their wines but didn't love them. read more

I have been to John Anthony Wine Bar twice already and love it! This is a great winery to end a full day of tasting. It's located downtown in a very picturesque area. Not only does John Anthony have delicious wines - Side Note: I typically do not buy wines over $40, unless I absolutely love it. My fiance bough a bottle of yummy Muscato which was $52. This says a lot about a winery if we can for go our purchase limit. Anyways, where was I? Oh yes! They not only have wines that are pleasing to the palette, they also have people who seem to love what they do and are very genuine and fun at the same time. Both Tess & Dave are top notch individuals. They are what you want when you come to a relaxed, non-pretentious winery. They laugh & joke with you, and are also extremely knowledgeable about the wines and winery. Can I also add that the first time I visited, I was amazed by the way the employees go above & beyond for their guests: I requested if we can get soem cupcakes brought there for a birthday surprise and they did it! They took time out of their day to pick up the cupcakes and have it ready in a beautiful presentation for us by the time we got to the wine bar. On my most recent visit we were lucky enough to meet the Wine Maker and owner himself, John Anthony. He was a very friendly and up-beat person which was also nice to see. Pros: fantastic red wines. Cons: wish I could afford to drink them every day. We stopped by John Anthony after a personal recommendation. I had not heard or read anything about the wines. So after spending the earlier part of the day tasting wines around Napa, we stopped by without any expectations. We were all red wine drinkers so the first white went without much notice. The atmosphere was great, good calm music playing, and Jesse was very attentive. The first red served was the Syrah. Everyone took a sip and no one spoke. We all kept sipping it to make sure it actually was this good. The reds just got better from there. The culmination were the two red blends, which were outstanding. Personally I thought the Reserve was a little young and probably needed to rest a few more years as it couldn't stand up to the Magnum. We bought two bottles of Merlot and enjoyed them 4 days later after tasting wine all over Napa and Sonoma. Still by far the best. read more

We were a small group of guys who came up here for a gentlemen's bachelor party weekend in Napa. We did some wine tours in the morning and finished up here at night. This place was the perfect place to host a small party of 4-12 friends. They have a private room you can request in advance for no extra charge and this private room is what made our event incredible. The private room seriously feels like a VIP club lounge room where you just paid top dollar for bottle service, yet it has no extra charge to use the room. Btw, I contacted about 8 other wineries/tasting rooms in downtown Napa and this place was the only one with a private room. We sampled a few wines, but the Syrah (about $75~) was by far our favorite. This syrah did not have the heavy bite that many syrah's have. This syrah was VERY easy to drink on its own, but we still had some cheese/deli meat as well. The service was fantastic and they were incredibly accommodating. They brought out plates and a slate cheese board for our cheeses and deli meat that we brought along with us. They had the perfect balance of coming into the room to serve us while giving us our privacy. If you are having a bachelor or bachelorette party, reserve the room at John Anthony Vineyards, have a few bottles of wine here and prepare some intimate toasts among friends. The atmosphere and intimate words we shared with one another made this place our #1 experience in Napa this weekend. We were able to drink, laugh, and share tears with one another as we reflected on our friendships. We were here for 4 hours, yet it felt like the time was too short. read more

The tastings were okay. Nothing really stood out out of all the pours, but I think it's because I'm comparing it to ... "Napa" standards (as there are just so many different types of delicious wines out there there). Although nothing in particular stood out, this place is great for just kicking back with friends if you are already in downtown Napa and want to get a tasting in. The service was also okay. Not bad and not overly friendly, just right in the middle I'd say. Fabulous novel idea for a wine bar/lounge in downtown Napa! It's a fantastic addition to Napa's night life (which there isn't much currently)! Very upscale & modern "hang-out" wine tasting bar/lounge. I recommend the cheese board which came w/ four cheeses, salted almonds, salami, cranberries & olives. A more relaxing wine tasting environment that's on a popular downtown Napa area. However, service was just okay. Our server lacked personality and was not very attentive during our wine tasting. Hope they will retrain their staff. Note: 1) an employee told me that they're in the process of opening a John Anthony Restaurant next door to this wine bar. 2) They're now closed at Midnight, instead of 2am. read more

I've been here 3 times. I think John has been my pourer each time. Tastings are on the expensive side ($25-$50), but this is a quiet place with good conversation from the pourers, extra pours, and they usually waive a tasting if you buy a bottle. The bottles themselves are not that pricey ($50-$125 for most) . This is not a very "fancy" experience because it's a little tasting room downtown, so maybe not the best for people who want to come eat grapes off the vine and lake photos, but a hidden gem of an experience for those who like wine. We just left John Anthony after a recommendation / invitation from Lexus. We went in blindly having no idea what to expect. From the first step inside, we were impressed with the comfortable yet elegant decor. The service - EXCELLENT! Jeff Wright... knowledgable but not overbearing. Now for the best part, the wines: we had the best Cab of our lives.... the 2005 Reserve! A close second was the '08 Oak Knoll Cab; although hubby feels the '06 Cab might be slightly better. Fantastic tasting on Monday, July 4th with Ted. My wife and I shared a couple of tastings and really enjoyed his approach to walking us through the wines, the story of the winery, and how he included details of the wine growing and production process along the way. Very entertaining, educational, and enjoyable! And since this is a winery, we should spend a moment on the wines themselves - they were exceptional from top to bottom. The Chardonnay was not our favorite, but we LOVED the Church Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc and the Syrah (walked away with bottles of each) and the Merlot was really good as well. The three Cabs we tried were very good, lots of fun and really different from each other. When we come back (and we will come back) I want to try the Cab terroir tasting and the vertical Cab library tasting to continue our wineducation. read more

John Anthony Vineyards/Wine Bar was a really cool spot to stop at prior to my dinner at E'toile @ Domaine Chandon. It's located in downtown Napa and provides a very trendy yet cool and inviting wine bar run by a bunch of really cool guys. My cousin frequents this wine bar and had me try a few of their wines while I was there. I was pleasantly surprised with the wines that they're presenting in addition to several other wines by the glass from local vineyards. Apparently there are several spots that close early in downtown Napa and/or at 5pm so JA Vineyards/Wine bar is a very welcome addition to the town! Go and check them out!!! I didn't hate this place, but i didn't love it either. I thought it was a very cute little place - very trendy and the decor was nice. We tried the wine flight tasting. It was nice that it came with meet and cheese, but i still think it was pretty expensive for what it was. The wines themselves were good but also too expensive in my opinion. There are many other wineries in the Napa valley area that were more worth the high price. I do think I'd try this place out again though next time in downtown napa, but maybe as more of an evening hangout. It does seem like a nice place to go to with friends as opposed to a quick tasting which is what my husband and I did. i'd just plan to bring more more money next time I guess! read more
