We found Joey by calling the number listed on a property we were interested in seeing last January. We made it clear that we were just looking and probably wouldn't do anything until March. He was great, not pushy at all and didn't make us feel like we were wasting his time. At the beginning of March we called him again. Now we were seriously looking. While he sent us properties to look at, we pretty much knew what units we wanted. We were deciding between two properties and even though his commission would have been substantially higher for one, he advised us to go with the lower priced property. He said it was a much better value and was in better condition. He was fearless in his negotiating. We were able to close a week early which was great because we're doing a complete rehab and our contractor could start sooner. Unlike so many agents, he picked us up and drove us to our closing. (tl;dr Knowing he wasn't getting a huge commission at our price point, Joey stuck with us for over a year as we looked at foreclosures. We finally closed in 2/2013 and got a note through the mail slot a day later offering over 30k more than we paid for it so yeah, we're pretty big fans.) My wife and I began looking for a house soon after we moved to Chicago a couple years ago. We knew almost nobody here and had no real estate agent referrals. We called Joey because on a pre-move fact finding trip to Chicago, we had wandered into an Open House he was having, just to see what places looked like here. Knowing we were not in the immediate market, Joey still spent a lot of time talking to us about the market, what we could expect for different price points, etc. We figured a guy who was that cool about helping obvious nonclients would be pretty honest and helpful with actual clients. This review was 15 months, 11 offers and 5 times "under contract" in the making. Joey stuck with my wife and I through all of that , leading us through the process of buying our first home, a foreclosure in Logan Square. That he hung in there through so many weekend showings of gutted hell holes ("Watch out, the floor is gone here" was said in at least two places we looked at), confrontations with angry tenants in falling down multi-family termite lairs and ever-more-farcical ways for deals to fall through is a tribute to his character as a person, not just a realtor. We don't know how much he made on our final sale, but knowing our price range, he must have made something close to minimum wage, if that, after all the hours he put in, and he was chipper and positive the whole time. If it sounds like we are reviewing a friend, we kind of are at this point, since we ended up spending hours and hours with him over such a long period of time. I would never wish our experience on another home buyer, but if you are just starting to look, our advice would be that you just cannot know how long it is going to take and how stressful it can be. It is, as Joey warned us at our first meeting, an emotional roller coaster, and when you get on a ride like that you want to be sitting next to someone who not only knows the ride, but that you like, because you can end up spending a lot of time with them. You are, however, hiring a RE to be the person who helps you make the largest purchase in your life, so being nice is important to your mental health, but not your wallet. We knew almost nothing about Chicago and its neighborhoods when we moved here. Joey talked to us about the kind of lifestyle we wanted (restaurants within walking distance, diverse mix of people, a neighborhood bar to go to but not a nightlife area, public transit access) and helped us narrow our search to a few neighborhoods while talking us into looking at outlier spots that were especially good deals or close to parks that are about to be developed but not built yet. He has an extensive knowledge of many different areas of Chicago and how they are changing. One thing they never tell you: it actually takes a team of people to do the final buying part. Lawyers, finance people, inspectors, etc. Your RE can be a kind of gateway to them, and the people Joey recommended shared his knowledgeable, friendly demeanor. When we didn't hit it off with one loan guy-our phone calls just seemed kind of awkward, like we were talking past each other-Joey told us "Hey, if it doesn't click, no problem, we'll find someone else." This is our first home, and after a long, long process, we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. At first we thought this was how all buying agents were, but having heard a bunch of stories from other folks over the past two years, we feel we really got above and beyond service from Joey and could not recommend him more highly. read more
