This was a wonderful place, best selection on high end long lasting fabrics like Eddie Bauer duck cloth. Other fabric stores do not compare. Joann fabrics will be sorely missed. There is nothing like shopping in person, seeing what you are buying, not buying if not up to your expectations. Getting craft paint for $1.49 vs the same paint online and paying under $10 with shipping and handling, not to mention packaging bad on the environment, and the wait time to receive it. The majority of their items were better than average and those who sew or do crafts know better materials and products yield better results. read more

Every time I shop here, I tell myself never again. Why? Well they never have any shopping carts available, the place is always a mess, there's always tons of things out of stock, and the employees seem like they'd rather be getting a root canal than working here. Yet as a crafter, my options are limited because I refuse to shop at Joann's main competitor down in East Haven for political reasons. So here I am, once again looking for fabrics for my next quilt. Fortunately, I know how to shop the sales and maximize the coupons to my benefit enough to find what I need. I'm not quite organized enough to plan ahead and order things from better sources online, so when I need, I keep coming back here. I keep hoping that upper management can get this (and all the other Joann stores out there) turned around so it's a more pleasant customer experience. read more

Everything that can go wrong did. Buckle up. I've been wanting to buy a Cricut for over a year. I finally made the decision to buy when it was on sale for $169 (originally $249). I was on my way home from a weekend trip on Sunday and decided to order online for curbside pickup at the Hamden store. It said the store had 5 models of the color I wanted in stock. But every time I tried to check out, the website crashed. I tried this about six times over the course of about four hours. I became frustrated with the website so I decided to just go into the store in person and pick up the Cricut. There was a display but no tickets, so I asked a manager. She was very pleasant and went in the back to see if she could find one. She brought out a brown cardboard mailing box that had been taped shut with packing tape. I checked out but was a little frazzled just because the store was busy and spending a lot of money on things makes me a little anxious, so I didn't check the receipt before I left. When I got home, I noticed I had been charged the original price of $249 and I had been sold a floor model. The receipt said "display". In addition to being overcharged I wasn't given a discount for a display model. On Monday, I called the Hamden store but they were closed. I called the general Joann number but there was no answer. I went on the Joann website and sent an email. The next day, I hadn't received any response so I sent another email. After not receiving a response at the end of the day, I texted the Joann customer service line. They texted me back the next morning saying "Hello! My name is Keyra, and I will be assisting you today. My apologies, you will need to call the store or go there again for further assistance". I asked whether they could help, and they said "Unfortunately as this purchase was in the store the only who can help you with a refund is the store where you make the purchase, hope you can understand, sorry" I called the Hamden store again but there was a bad connection on their end and they hung up the phone. When I called again a few hours later, the same manager who had originally helped me picked up and said she remembered me. She said they could not give me a partial refund over the phone, and that I would have to bring the machine back into the store so they could scan the barcode, do a return for a full refund, and then I would buy the machine again for the correct sale price. I live closer to the store in Newington, so I asked whether I could return it and purchase it again there instead. She gave the Newington store a call and explained to them the situation. On Tuesday, I went into the Newington store and brought the machine in with me. There was no barcode on the box, so they just asked to see my receipt and manually typed in the numbers. Turns out I didn't have to bring in the machine after all, but my overcharge was fixed. The people in the Newington store were nice. It's Wednesday now, and I got home from work and finally opened the box. I took the machine out but there was nothing else in the box. The machine is supposed to come with a power cord to plug it in, a USB cord to connect to a laptop, a cutting mat, a blade with housing, a Cricut pen, and a few other things. I wondered whether some of those things were tucked away in the machine's storage areas but when I opened up the machine there was nothing. I called the Hamden store again. I explained to them what had happened. The person on the phone didn't offer any apologies and said I would have to bring the machine back into the Hamden store, but I would be charged a $25 restocking fee. (Lol what?) I asked for clarification, since I purchased an unusable machine, and she just repeated that I would be charged $25 to return or exchange it for one that actually has all the parts. I asked if I could go to the Newington store instead. She said I would have to call the Newington store and see if they would let me. I called the Newington store. The woman who answered the phone was sympathetic and apologized for what had happened. She said she could do an exchange(without charging me a fee, of course). So tomorrow I will bring the machine in and exchange it and hopefully I will be able to start using a Cricut. read more

Possibly haunted by the spirit of customers waiting for fabric to be cut. This is the creepiest Joann I've ever been to, and that includes some of the tiny old ones. Aisles are incredibly narrow, with tall displays, so the effect is claustrophic -- made more so when half the displays are empty. When I went on MLK Day, this store was struggling with a post-holiday switchover that most chains managed a couple weeks ago. The seasonal shelves were mostly empty, with maybe three spring/Easter items, about the same amount of Valentine's Day, no Saint Patrick's Day at all -- no winter/spring themes other than a handful of shabby chic/Magnolia Home-type plaques. I'd have thought the store was planning to close, except that next to nothing was on sale. Employees were eager to follow me around the store, so maybe shoplifters took all the spring merch? You're going to go here because it's convenient. It's not an enjoyable shopping experience, so plan for ice cream or a stiff drink afterward. read more

Never have been a big fan of Joanns in general- I usually only shop there to get sewing notions like needles, thread, etc. Their prices are good for things like that, especially with coupons. There is not a great selection of fabric and the quality is not great. This store seems really run down compared to other locations in the area. read more

Looooooveeesss iiittt!!!! The Jo-Ann I'm used to is fabrics. Just fabrics. So unless I was picking out a fabric to make my dog a sweater, I didn't go. But this Jo-Ann's! It has crafts! Not just a little bit of crafts but enough to allllmmooosst make me stop going to Michael's all together because this place is so close and has everything I need! I just dropped $40 on Jolees scrapbooking decals because they were all 30% off. So good. K I sound like a crazy old woman now, but this place is great. I'm glad I discovered it! read more

Run of the mill Jo-Ann's. Nothing special, but one of the few places that sells fabric in the area. They have a wide arrange of threads and notions. However, why is there never anyone in the fabric area when I need help or if I have a question? There is always a line in the cutting station and it takes FOREVER. Hint: Make sure you sign up for the coupons. read more

Overall, always have great items and the prices are decent. You should always make sure to look in the Saturday/Sunday paper and cut out their coupons or go online and print them. They always have 40-50% off coupons on any single item and 60%off custom framing! I think the only downfall of this place is there is never enough people working. The ones that are working are super friendly, but they need more staff in order to make this place run a bit smoother. read more

The man in the fabric cutting area was very rude and his entire demeanor was appalling ... this isn't the first time customer service was an issue,. I frequent the Milford location and they can't be more accommodating ... It seems like they have to go out of their way to offer customer service. I have shopped at Jo-Ann Fabrics in Hamden, CT a lot. I usually don't require help from the staff, but today I did, and I was overwhelmed by how unhelpful and rude the staff was to me. I was buying some foam cushioning and fabric to make a window seat cover as a birthday present for my best friend's daughter. I assumed I could have the foam cut to the dimensions I needed. I was told by an annoyed employee at the cutting counter that she could only cut the length, but not the width. I asked if I could cut the foam at home with scissors. She said no. I (very nicely) asked to speak to a manager, as I wanted to buy the foam, but just wasn't sure what to do if I couldn't get it to the size I needed there and couldn't cut it, myself, at home. I thought there must be a solution. The manager was, at least, able to tell me that they use an electric carving knife. I have one of these at home - great! However, she met me with a scowl, although I met her with a smile and she treated me like the enemy the whole time, rather than as a nice customer who was spending $40 on a small bit of foam, plus more on fabric, and just didn't know how to go about making the project work, as she'd never done it before. The reason the manager gave me for not being able to cut the foam's width was that it would take too much time. There was no one behind me in line. Meanwhile, the first cutter had gone on to help another customer, and another employee came along to cut my foam and fabric. When I told him how much fabric I wanted, he said, "Oh, that won't be anywhere near enough!" I had already measured, planned how I'd cut the fabric, calculated the total, including seam allowances. I explained that I still had to cut the foam smaller and told him how I planned to cut the fabric. He still insisted I needed more. Exasperated, I said I would take however much he recommended. It turned out there wasn't even enough on the bolt for what I'd originally asked for. All of a sudden, he was telling me it was enough. Knowing I'd over-estimated what I actually needed, I took it. I seriously would have just given up on the project if I hadn't already committed to doing it for my friend and discussed the fabric choice at length. To culminate the whole experience, when I walked up to the registers to pay, the two cashiers were talking and no one was behind any registers, so I wasn't sure which register to go to. I stood there waiting to be noticed. One of them finally turned around and told me to go to register 5, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world and I was an idiot for just standing there. I think all of the employees at this store, including the managers, need some serious professional development on customer service! It may seem trivial, but being treated rudely can permanently change a person's impression of the store. As for me, I will be looking for a fabric store with better customer service for future projects. read more

I come to Joanns because it's very convenient since I live down the street. If youre coming in here knowing what you need and where it is you'll be fine. If you need help GOOD LUCK. I have worked retail before on the sales floor and it taught me a lot about being nicer to people. If someone is asking you where something is they are looking for your help, not looking to bother you. I wish i knew this womans name but i will just describe her. Shes about 5'5", heavy with brown hair and is just plain RUDE. I try to be really nice to people especially in retail because i have been in their shoes and i understand customers can be nasty.... but if someone is nice to you... what does it do for you to make them feel like crap for asking you where an item is? I have dealt with this nasty woman more than once and every time i keep a smile on my face and be as nice as possible because i truly am looking for some help. That being said, there are two older women who I usually see at the register who are as sweet as pie and super helpful. I used to come here once a week, now maybe i go once every 2 months. I much prefer Hobby Lobby in East Haven, their staff is much friendlier and way more helpful. read more
