This Joann is located in Ashbridge Square mall in Lancaster Ave Downingtown and near to hom2 depot, staples, etc. The store has shared parking and plenty. This location is huge and contains fabric, arts, and crafts that you might need for your variety of artwork and projects. I have used this place primarily for fabrics, and they have a huge collection, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable to select the right one for your project needs. They do run sales and coupons available, which is very valuable to bring the price down. Recently I shopped for some arts work and the collection is great too. I have shopped at this store for several years, but I think it has gone down in quality and stock in the past couple of years. I can usually find what I went for, but the store is looking poorly stocked in spite of "being completely renovated" recently. It is nice to shop there because it is rarely crowded, but I worry that it may not last much longer at this location because it seems to be phasing most of its stock out. Last time I was there (February 2024) they were still selling Halloween items. I enjoy shopping their fabric remnants and a few other sewing items, but even the make your own jewelry section is more empty than full. February 6, 2023, I went to the Downingtown, PA store to return a piece of fabric I purchased the week prior because it had been cut incorrectly. The following incident occurred and I am extremely upset!: I took the fabric I wanted to return to the cutting desk and explained to the salesperson that I had on my previous visit, asked the gentleman who had cut it for me for his help in determining how much fabric I would need to remake cover for a baby bouncy seat, and I handed it to him so he could determine the yardage I needed. He was not very kind or helpful and acted as if I was bothering him because I asked for his help instead of just TELLING HIM what I needed. At any rate, I handed him the bolt of fabric I chose to use and he cut it for me. When I got home to use the fabric for my project, I realized that he had cut it too short because he did not take into account that the fabric print could only be placed lengthwise (up and down) and not widthwise (sideways) and therefore cut it too short. As a long-time employee, He SHOULD have known that!!! (I frequent that store and know that he has been there for years). So, on February 9, 2023, I had to drive back to the store (10 miles from my home) to return the fabric and get the correct yardage. I went to the cutting desk and explained my situation to the salesperson, her name was ZUZANA. I told her that the gentleman who had cut it for me seemed disinterested in helping me and asked her if he was the manager, and she told me that there are four different men that are managers there (although I've never seen more than one male employee in that store who cuts fabric.). I said "Well, I can't recall his name, but he was a black man", (there was no negative tone or inflection whatsoever in my voice) I was simply identifying him. She replied "You mean African-American!" and I replied "Yes, OK, whatever term you want to use" and she said "NO, it's NOT OK and it's NOT whatever term I want to use, it's African American and you are a racist!"! I said "I did not mean to sound racist and was only using that term to describe him to you" and she said "That was a very racist remark you made". I said "I am an Italian American and do not go around calling myself an "Italian American". She said "Well, I'm a Slavic American and I DO and I'm NOT having this conversation with you, I'm just not" and she slammed my intended fabric purchase down on the table and tried to wrap it up as if she was not going to wait on me. Then she said "I'm not waiting on you, I'm just not, you're a racist, just leave the store!" I replied "I'm not leaving the store because I need that fabric and I told you I didn't mean anything by my description and it's none of your business anyway how I referred to him". She proceeded to argue, saying "It IS my business and you are a racist!" She must have then realized she was the EMPLOYEE and I was the CUSTOMER and proceeded to cut the fabric for me. When done, she made another remark under her breath which I did not hear and I asked her to repeat it, but she would not. So, I looked at her name tag which she saw me doing and she said "Go ahead, look at it, my name is Zuzana!" I told her I surely was looking for her name and surely would contact her employer to which she said "Go ahead! You made a very racist remark and I'm not having this conversation with you, leave the store, JUST LEAVE THE STORE!!" In addition to her accusations and insults, she was very LOUD to the point that I wanted to ask her to lower her voice but figured she would just hurl more accusations and insults at me, so I didn't bother, but I was mortified and embarrassed. I paid for my purchases and left the store in tears with my heart beating out of my chest and my hands shaking!! I am 63 years old and Do Not need this unwarranted aggravation from an EMPLOYEE at Joann Fabric who is supposed to be providing customer service and satisfaction, not to mention minding their own damn business! I will NOT tolerate this behavior from ANYONE and will surely make public this occurrence! read more

Don't shop there in the winter. It's always very cold in there. Even the people working there are always wearing multiple layers. It isn't a one time thing. It's like that whenever it's cold weather. Makes we wonder why they don't all call out sick. read more

I have to agree with some of the negative reviews here. Customer service at the store leaves for better to be desired. Checkout lanes can get ridiculous at times. In fact, I am writing this review now while waiting in a checkout lane;) The wait in line to get your fabric cut can be outrageous. At one point I was in line for 20+ minutes to get my fabric cut and ready, and then another 20 minutes in a checkout line, so needless to say I was not a happy camper;( One thing I noticed is they have more sales associates in the evening and on weekends. So you could just have to go against common sense and shop during 'busy time' to avoid lines. The positives: The store is always clean, well lit and very organized. The selection, especially for fabrics, is amazing. If you do manage to get hold of a sales associate they are pretty helpful. read more

After reading the earlier posts I feel compelled to comment. I have shopped at JoAnn fabrics for years. I do not shop there on a weekly basis, but frequently enough to be very familiar with the store. It is the most convenient fabric store to my home, and I regularly shop there for both sewing and craft materials. Especially with craft materials I comparison shop, if I have time, at competitors in the area. I have experienced light staffing issues at times. However, with the exception of one male employee, I have found the employees to be helpful, friendly and curteous. The one male employee has been has been rude and condecending when I have interacted with him. I have thought of saying something to a manager, but never have followed through. There usually are other employees who are interested in helping you, and I just avoid interacting with him if at all possible. Not speaking up has been my issue. Also, I do think it is unrealistic to expect all employees to be versed in all types of crafts and sewing, especially if they are young. Lately I have noticed several new employees who are learning the system and store. In my experience they have called for assistance when unfamiliar with something. My suggestion for people lacking in knowledge about some departments, is to provide some training to help them be better able to assist customers. I have never had any difficulty or experienced bad attitude when returning items. Recently, I was surprised to learn that fabrics that have been cut from the bolt can usually be returned! We came last night to get supplies for our class today. First customer service girl pointed us in the right direction, but little more than that. Second time around,( we had trouble matching colors) we really nice, complimenting and encouraging. My 9yr old daughter took a sewing class. It was GREAT! **Shoppers Beware** I've been a frequent shopper of Joann's since I'm a big time crafter. However after my recent experience I will never shop here again. Please note to NEVER buy big ticket items like a Cricut from Joann's because if by chance you change your mind and want to return it, they will only offer you a store credit even if you have your original receipt. Their "Hassle Free" policy states they will return any items with a receipt and will give original form of payment with a smile. Such a lie! My husband purchased a Cricut Maker ($400 machine) and tried it return unopened unused with a receipt and was told they did not have enough money in store and can only offer a store credit. Right now I have to deal with corporate and will have to ship this machine to them just to get my money back. Also, I was told the DM was going to call, but now he or she is not. This has been the worse experience ever. Their "Hassle Free" return policy has been the biggest hassle. So I advise you to only make big purchases from Walmart, Michaels, Amazon, or A.C. Moore. I was looking to purchase some fabric for a project I have in mind. The new JoAnn's store popped into my head and off I went. The store seemed huge and while I am sure they have more merchandise than the store in Devon, I didn't really like the set up. For one thing, I spent a while looking for interfacing but it's kept behind the cutting counter. I didn't realize that interfacing is such a hot ticket item for shop lifters these days... This was my first visit to this Joann's. I picked it because I live equidistant between here and the store in Newark, DE and thought I would enjoy the drive more vs. no sales tax. I was right about that. The store was clean and neat. I had a list of things I needed and found all but one item. I stopped being impressed when I began interacting with the totally disinterested staff at the cutting counter and checkout. I was the only customer at the cutting counter, but had to wait while two clerks finished their personal conversation. The worst customer service ever!!! I saw a Christmas print that I needed that wasn't available in the Joann's by me. So online it said that this store had 8 available. My husband and I drove an hour to this store and I asked the sales associate if she had that print because I didn't see it on the shelf. She told me "if it's not there, then we don't have anymore" So I told her that it said that it had eight available so she went into the back room and checked and she said that they had them but they were behind some boxes that were not open and she couldn't give them to me. I have to agree on the poor customer service. There are a few nice and helpful people (one is a young man who I've seen a couple of times), but most of the ladies are not at all helpful. It's like they're doing to a big, fat favor if they even acknowledge your existence. I don't know if they just know nothing about sewing and crafting or if they're just plain surly and rude, but I think it's the latter. For example, I was looking for a certain size piping once, like two feet away from the cutting counter I see some, but the size I want seems to be sold out. However, it didn't look like the 'normal' display (it looked like a 'sale' rack) so I turned to ask the lady about it. My father and I had clearly been talking about it and searching, and as soon as we turned to this lady, she snatched up the phone and turned her back on us, as if we're stupid and wouldn't have seen that she was trying to avoid having to help. This was just one incident, but I've had these experiences over and over at Jo-Anne's. The ladies treat you like you're invisible until they absolutely cannot avoid acknowledging you, then they do the absolute minimum necessary to get you to leave them alone. I just recently asked a price for a package of pre-cuts as they were all kind of tossed around without clear signage. The lady told me she didn't know, with this tone of voice like "Why are you asking me". She then told me I could take it to the register for a price-check. Umm... how about you offer to find OUT the price for the customer? It's a shame because they would definitely sell more if their salespeople were more helpful and encouraging. I can only imagine that they must have horrible management. So I get as much of what I need as I can at Michael's where the salespeople practically trip over one another to get to you first and offer to help you find something. They're so helpful and inspiring that I always end up leaving there with 'extra' stuff to try new projects. At least 5 people will offer to help me in an average trip to Michael's and they don't act like it's an imposition.
