Took me a while to write this, but I came back here because I had a good dinner here and decided to do a Korean bbq closer to my home. We were even greeted with a welcome back and given a welcome back coupon, which I loved, so the night started out well. Now for context to my frustration, last time we went here, our server cooked everything, so we only came back because we wanted to go to a Korean bbq specifically where they cooked the meat for you as well. Apparently, that isn't the norm. We ordered drinks and then waited a substantial amount of time before the servers came back to ask for our food order. Literally the table next to us ordered before us and we're basically near the end of their meal before we even ordered. Mind you, we were seated right in the thick of where the servers go in and out of the kitchen and you can see everything going on (or lack of anything). Drinks took forever to come and they started cooking one of the meats and then never came back. They kept walking past our table and not saying anything. We had to tell them that we needed help and asked if someone was going to cook for us. They apologized and would start cooking again only when we complained, but then would proceed to leave and not come back until we asked again. They kept giving us excuses that they were short staffed, which is understandable, but not when we can see them literally doing nothing about it. There was no sense of urgency or trying to work harder since they were understaffed. They would stand at the little computer at the door to the kitchen looking like they were doing something, while the rest of the restaurant was being ignored. We mentioned to them multiple times that we were being ignored and they offered to take care of us with dessert or maybe comp something at the end. At this point, I'm quiet because I'm visibly annoyed by the incompetence and got to the point where I didn't even want to talk to the staff anymore. I kinda have RBF, so I know they were feeling my frustration. We were almost done eating and were waiting for them to start cooking the shrimp, which was the last meat on our combo, and the server came by and asked if we wanted the check. I was like, "we aren't even done eating, we were waiting for someone to cook the shrimp." Now if they initially told us that we would be cooking, this all wouldn't be a problem, but we were under the impression that they would cook our food, which was the root of the entire service problem we were having. Finally, they came by with desserts that were on the house, even though I really wanted them to just comp something instead, but they didn't give us the option. We didn't even want dessert, but were forced to eat it because they felt it was a good solution to the problems with service. They even asked if we wanted a shot on the house, but I didn't want to drink alcohol that night, and when I refused, they teased me about it. It's my business if I want to drink or not, but don't assume everyone thinks alcohol solves everything. That left a sour note in my mind and sealed the deal that we won't come back. Not our first time but the time where we took pictures. :) We came for Mother's Day, or at least the day before. 3 of us with a pretty high tab, would say that this is not an inexpensive experience. It was a treat for us, so no holding back. We ordered 2 portions of the premium dinner and a couple additional items. The meat was excellent, definitely really great cuts compared to some other locations we've been to. Folks are spot on, the drinks are superb! On both our occasions, we really enjoyed the drinks - even having the bartenders make something based on a few hints and it was great. When it comes to the price there were some items a bit unbalanced. For instance, we ordered the premium portions which included 4-5 meat types and 3 pieces each per a person was a nice variety. I made reservations ahead of time but still had to wait about 20 minutes, which wasn't too bad since I wasn't in a rush. Joa is not the most authentic Korean bbq place but it's a great place to enjoy Korean bbq in a fun, casual but upscale atmosphere. The meat quality was good and the banchans that came out were good as well. Price was adequate, considering the quality and the service. They don't serve kimchi unless you ask them so dont hesitate to ask for some if you want! There were times when I wanted to just take over cooking the meat but the server didn't seem to like that so I just left it to the server lol. The meats were very good and everything was elevated from the sauces and accompaniments to the garlic cloves that are grilled in a sauce. I would also suggest double checking your bill before you pay. I footed the bill for our large party and didn't realize until after we left, that we were charged for an extra dish they were out of. They split us to two tables so I didn't hear the waitress tell that half of our party that they were out of the item, so not sure why it ended up on the bill. So I called, they let me know it would be removed off the bill the next day. That never happened. Which is frustrating. So just double check so they can remove it on the spot. read more

Absolutely worth every penny. I'm used to the thin AYCE kbbq so I wasn't sure about JOA since it cost more but it was 10000% worth it. We did the Texas set (serves 4 ppl) for $199. That's around $50 per person before tip and it's honestly not expensive if you truly think about it. The set came with salad, rice, soup, ice cream and unlimited side dishes. And everything was soo good. I was expecting the salad and soap to be okay but they really put in tons of love and care to every dish. (You have to ask for kimchi on the side/no charge) there was also so much meat and our server was kind enough to do most of the cooking for us. Got the corn cheese and "kimichi" salad. Air quotes because there's no actually kimichi. It's just a salad mix tossed in some sesame oil and tart dressing. It was a good pairing and balance for the meal tbh. Service was excellent. We made a reservation ahead of time cause I didn't know how busy they'd be on a Thursday night. Got seated right away and our server was very sweet and attentive. He stopped by frequently, answered our questions, and made sure we had everything we needed. They do cook her for you which is nice. We were starving so we opted for the Taste of Joa, which the menu states it serves 2, but comfortably fed 4 of us! All the meats were fresh and delicious. We also ordered the Mountain Bulgogi Hot Pot which was such a fun dish to eat! I would love to go back and have this again in the winter time. The meat, noodles and rice cakes soak up all the flavorful broth around the base. Pork jowl is my fav and I'm so glad we added a side of this. Our server, Peter, cooked it to crispy perfection. We decided to share everything (besides my drink of course, ha)! I ordered a yuzu mojito, and it was so good I ended up going to Total Wine the next day to by Yuzuri yuzu liquor! The service here was outstanding too! We ordered the Taste of Joa: Prime short rib, Black Angus hanger steak, Black Angus marinated bone-in short rib, Black Angus ribeye, and shrimp. This also came with banchan (the favorite was the radish and jalapeno pickles), rice, onion and scallion salads, soybean soup with beef and tofu, and a chilled cucumber soup for a palate refresher. We each got a sauce plate with ssamjang, sweet soy, and salt. The grill got a little bowl of garlic in sesame oil which got amazingly soft like garlic confit as the grill cooked it. This was an amazing addition to our meal. We also ordered steak noodles with black bean paste which was also very tasty. Banchan and salads were refilled throughout as requested. The staff helped us cook the meat, but this family does not like same doneness for our beef, so my mother-in-law barely cooked hers, and Eric R. and I had more cooked beef. I think we all liked the hanger steak and marinated short rib the best. We were very satisfied and stuffed. When we got seat it took a long time for our server to be right with us... we even had to ask another server. This place is still working out the kinks of service. A review of Joa minus the Taste of Joa experience. I did not get this since it was unavailable until the following week. Went early on a Thursday and service was nice and prompt. Helpful with allergies for my table and another table. All the table Banchan was fantastic. As was the provided free barley tea. and water if requested. Kimchi fried rice for $14.90 leaves MUCH to be desired. Lacks in the kimchi department and the traditional lovely Korean ingredients such as sesame oil fragrance. Weakest link to the menu. Steak Noodles for $12.90 was the most anticipated dish. Came out piping hot and smelled good! Noodles are generic instant noodles. Lovely onions that came with it. Steak was a bit too smoked with the torch. Had a good crisp to it. I recommend cooking it to a medium, not well as it was provided as is. Black bean sauce was flavorful. Pork Gochujang Jjigae for $12.90 was pretty good compared to the other dishes. Pork belly was somewhat soft. I enjoyed the strew since the broth notes were on the spicier side of things. Potatoes were perfectly soft. JOA has always been my go to. I rant and rave to everyone about how they have to try it. This weekend was restaurant week and they had a course menu. We actually wanted to get the Bulgogi tower and the Matcha Monte Blanc dessert. But the set menu had it included so we decided to go that route. When asked if we were ready for dessert I double checked that it was the matcha dessert and was told yes. To my surprise it was just a store bought cheesecake (FROZEN...) and I only got a "It not my fault" from the server. Apologies were accepted but when promotions are in place letting guest know when things are out is important.
