The day before I leave my battery starts to show signs it's dying. The local HD store is closed on Monday so I called and spoke with the head chief here. He told me to swing in and they could set me up with a new battery if I hustled over. Trust me when I say the Blue Ridge Parkway is NOT the place to find out your battery just died, so I hustled over just as fast as my little bike could take me. It took them a bit longer to install the battery than he thought it would thanks to Harley over engineering everything, but he only charged me the quoted time for the service which was nice. He's a very personable guy as well. They also have a lot of riding gear to check out and I walked away with some additional rain gear which I probably should have picked up a week ago. Their prices are right to be sure. Their showroom for bikes isn't large but there is no question they just earned a customer for life on their service side of the spectrum. Most dealers wouldn't care what your emergency was, but a real service department gets you back on the road because they know those rides just won't wait.

Rusty at D & Sons does a great job of explaining what's going on regardless of your skill level with cars. I've been to other places that either throw a bunch of jargon at you or on the flip side act like "oil leak" will go over your head. Rusty always explains things and gives the options so that I can make an informed decision about it. As a woman, there've been a number of times where I went to other mechanics and got the feeling that they were ready and waiting to take full advantage of my naivety by using jargon to justify a 500% price increase. Here, on the other hand, it feels like they go the extra mile to help me understand the issue, my options, and offer professional recommendations based on what's best for me rather than what would make them the most money. That's the reason I recommend D & Sons to all my friends in the area -- because they are trustworthy, which is priceless. At one point I thought I needed new brake pads (Google was very convincing) so went in to get them, expecting to pay about $500 or so. They took a look and told me they still had a lot of life left on them and explained the noise (if I remember correctly it was solved with a couple of nuts). Even in the rare situation where life happens and they miss something, they take good care of me - I had an alternator go out, they replaced it, then the replaced one went out too. Turns out there was a wire with a short. They fixed the wire and put in a new alternator at no extra cost to me. They don't try to upsell you, aren't pushy, but if something is important they'll let you know. Since it's getting to the point where some fixes would cost more than my car is worth just in parts, if we run into those they let me know my options and if that issue isn't a concern for safety or passing inspection and won't significantly impact anything as long as it's monitored, they'll let me know that not fixing it is also a viable option. In general, their prices are more affordable than most other places I've been or at the very least on par. Altogether, D & Sons is a place I'd recommend to anyone needing car work done.

We were only about 7 miles out from our hotel, but we were worried we might be looking at a transmission replacement as it seemed like the transmission went "limp" and wouldn't change gears while driving! The team at Budget Radiator and Automotive got us in quickly, took the time to thoroughly diagnose the problem, and didn't jump to conclusions or try to sell us unnecessary repairs. They found that the alternator had failed, but they didn't stop there. During the repair they discovered the serpentine belt and tensioner were also failing because the belt kept slipping off. They explained everything clearly, showed us what was happening, and made sure the repair was done correctly. After replacing the alternator, serpentine belt, and tensioner, they checked the transmission fluid at my request, (which looked great), then test drove the van for about 20 miles to make sure everything was working properly before calling us. That's the kind of attention to detail and professionalism every customer hopes for. The van now runs beautifully, all of the warning lights are gone, and we have complete confidence driving it home. When you're traveling and your vehicle breaks down hundreds of miles from home, you're putting a lot of trust in a repair shop you've never met. They didn't show me the scan results afterwards. Someone tell me, a former ASE certified transmission mechanic why a transmission completely locked up because of their claim of a bad EGR valve. A year of training for an ultra marathon shut down due to the expenses. Thanks a lot guys. My engine runs like it should. Warranty or not. The transmission completely failed in less than a year.
