I am going to rate this place a 3 simply because I've been here before and the music and vibes were good. I went strictly to get a plate of oxtails tonight which I have never had and let me just say I will NEVER order them here again. The smell was alarming as soon as she gave me the plate but with it being so dark, I couldn't actually see it. Once I got home , I realized why. I don't know what they served me (possibly neckbones) but they weren't oxtails. I cautiously ate some of it hoping I was wrong especially since the plate was over $35. i was there last night and we ordered the jj catfish alexander and the SHRIMP alfredo....what we got was chicken alfredo not SHRIMP...we even told the waitress and she said she would take care of it...however when the bill came she lied and told us the shrimp alfredo was cheaper and i believed her without fact checking that was my fault however she lied and i went with it....how do you tell a paying customer shrimp is cheaper than the chicken when you know it was not and still charge me after i told you that i wanted to make sure you were aware of that i asked for one thing and you gave me what you wanted me to have...so yes this review is 1 star for her lying straight to my face..our section bought 2 bottles so the gratuity she told me was 18 percent because of our party size. There was nothing wrong with the old location but they really nailed it with the new one. Vibrant, bigger and better! Drinks are still strong and food is still good, they didn't miss a beat. Food: The catfish and wings are both delicious and the portions are generous, enough to share which I didn't want to.... So we ended up ordering more. Cocktail service: They pour em good, strong and quick. The bartenders are in their working hard and doing their thing. It's a nice sized bar and they cover it pretty well, even with a full house. By far the most abysmal collusis of a late night extravaganza I've ever been to. Firstly I was frisked like I was at the airport dealing with TSA. THEN I paid for one drink and I was charged for two! Blackened catfish was great. Collards were dry lacking pot liquor or meat taste. Oxtails were one of the best I've had. The bartenders were friendly. On the other hand, when the crowd thickened, they basically serviced the front of bar. Horrible food service. We sat down at 7:40pm and ordered right away. Most people in the place were just drinking not ordering food so I assumed the food would be out rather quickly. My husband had two drinks while waiting for our food one beer tasted funny. After checking the expiration date, it was indeed expired. My first time visiting was last night with an invite from a group of friends as an alternative meet up location. I actually yelped it first saw the reviews that weren't so good with limited details. I usually dont pay much attention to complaints about weak drinks, because there are many factors- alcohol tolerance, bartenders, selections. They served food & drinks & we've never gone before. The food was the deciding factor if we should go or not. We were hungry, all 4 of us. Hey let's give it a go anyway. Now this is where it goes downhill for me. Upon entry at 1am, we were required to pay $10 each. I, not hearing the hostess at the door, showed my ID she just said "you're good" my hunk of a man passed over a $20 to her. She hands me a ticket stating I can use it to either get a free plate from the buffet or a free drink from the bar, my Mr gets one too. I'm waiting for change because surely we are not paying $10 each to get into a bar. And there wasn't any change! I've never paid $10 to get in a bar that could fit about 100 ppl. A club, Yes! Bar, No. Bars are usually free or $5 entry. So this is a red flag for me- I'm no restaurateur, but that door price screams desperation & struggle. Which sucks because for it to be a small place it was really nice. The Mr. Assures me it's okay because he's ready to eat & drink. We take our struggle tickets to the bar because black folks, (and I'm sure other nationalities)don't eat from unattended buffets in places with people they aren't familiar with. We had no idea how long the food had been out, if it was warming or cold or overcooked from warming. We'll order fresh food from the bar, No biggie. We are told by the bartender they aren't serving food, it's only the buffet that you can use the ticket or pay another $10 and eat from buffet (if ticket had already been used). STRUGGLE & DESPERATION. They couldn't find food from their regular menu that has a 15 minute cook time? The place wasn't packed (about 40 ppl tops) this told me there wasn't a process in place that allowed them to serve people or they were being lazy. Either way, I'm not impressed and ready to go. We order drinks, the Mr. Starts a tab as usual. The music was cool. I liked the DJ. No complaints and despite the desperate tactics, the bartenders were nice and attentive. Which I appreciated and eased the let down. It's now 1:38am, we've ordered our second drink. People start to leave before we noticed the time. And almost immediately the employees start cleaning up-putting the chairs on the table & cleaning off the patio. Now we gotta throw our drinks down before we have to throw them away. There was no last call. Overall, I don't feel we got our money's worth. The door price is too high for that environment with no selection of food. Avid bar goers as us usually shy away from places with processes like this because it's not worth it. $10 door price at brickhouse or park ave at least get us in a bigger space and food until 12, so it's justified. I personally didn't see the value at JJ'S. Perhaps a happy hour or regular business hours experience would be more pleasing but I'm not convinced I need to give it a second chance. Not only that, the coward refuses to come out and address me! Not only are my drinks tonight going to be free I will never spend another dime in this hole in the wall! I've been here 4 times now.. and I honestly think it was because I showed up late and I joined my two friends who had already become regulars and got along with the bartender that was there those nights that the first two times were semi pleasant. The last two times we stopped in it was just to pregame and decide where we wanted to go to set roots for the night. We walked in around 9- place was dead except for a sprinkling of singles at the bar. We stood at the door to be seated- since most of the tables had "reserved" signs or linens and decorations on them. After a few minutes the bartender walked around the bar and asked us "what we needed". Rude. We asked if they were closed for a private event because it didn't seem there were available tables- so she pointed to the far corner and said we could sit at a small round table, then she walked off. Rude. After a few minutes, a sweet older lady (she is the only reason they have a star) came to take our order. We ordered a bucket of beer, one cocktail and a shot. Waited too long- there was literally nobody in the whole place! On top of that- the sassy bartender is the one that brought the bucket of beer- which she just slammed down on the table and walked off. Uh, no.. I will cut you... Located in Arlington, This jukejoint host all different ages who want to walk through the door! from ol heads to young wanna be playas to Thots and of course the more sophisticated women just sipping on their drinks trying to look cute. So i have no idea what the age requirement is! Plus there is no one at the door checking ID's or patting you down....now either they have never had any issues or everyone who comes here has some sense! Either way you bound to have a good time! The dance floor is small as Hell! but people still managed to get out there and do the Wobble line dance among others the dj played. Now, don't get it twisted he also played the lastest jams and even threw in some 2Pac & Biggie throw backs....its then when i realized how old I was rapping the entire Biggie songs...smh.
