I love this place. While in grad school I decided I wanted to get back into martial arts, but I wanted something that would be effective in self-defense situations as well. This led me to Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, but I didn't have time or money for it until I came back to Columbus.
Upon returning, I realized this was a golden opportunity to start training, so I started looking for gyms. It was really important to me to find one that was credible and focused on more than just competitions. Though there were a couple other places I considered, I was really impressed by Jason Keaton's credentials, and by the fact that he teaches Combatives on base at Ft. Benning. Even with my very small amount of experience, it was clear to me that he had extensive experience both at a competition level and in real-life scenarios. I also liked the fact that it was a privately-owned school. I like the vibe that gives.
Anyway, I signed up for his free private lesson special to see what it was like, and decided to give it at least six months and see where I was with it at the end.
I've reached the end of my first six months, and I'm excited to continue. I have to say that although I was excited to start, my appreciation for BJJ has only grown since I've been at this school. It's a very special environment, very family-like, and I feel like I've gotten in on the ground floor of something awesome. They're still pretty new and establishing a reputation, but already classes are growing and word is spreading.
Jason is a very good teacher and an incredible coach -- every time I've gotten to work one-on-one with him I've come away with so much. He really fosters a positive atmosphere in the school and encourages an attitude of giving back and constant learning at all levels (even his!), which I really think impacts the overall feel. You will always feel welcome, even if you just walked in off the street and are completely new to everything. He'll make sure you're looked after and have someone show you things so you aren't lost. His pricing is reasonable, especially considering the fact that there is no limit to the BJJ classes or open mats you can show up for. I chose to take full advantage and come in 3-4 times a week when I've been able. It's really paid off!
Jason will not give you "easy" promotions or empty praise. He expects you to work hard, and while he is positive and encouraging, always willing to clarify something you're having trouble with, he doesn't throw around compliments carelessly. But when he does say something or promote you, you'll know it was because you earned it -- even if it comes as a surprise! I have been in situations where martial arts teachers didn't challenge me and complimented me far too easily when they should have been pushing me to do better, and I can assure you the praise means so much more when you know it's not just thrown around. It motivates you to work hard and not get hung up on flattery or status.
Professor Jason's also fantastic with the kids...always a delight to watch his children's classes because he just gets them, and they respect him and clearly love being there. I see so many life skills being instilled, and it makes me happy.
I could probably ramble all day, but the point is that this school is rock-solid, because Jason is rock-solid. It will teach you more than a set of physical skills...and there's a good chance it will hook you on jiu jitsu! And you'll make some pretty neat friends while you're at it.
