OKie, My first ever Korean barbeque in Australia. Not bad. But the experience didn't blew me away…read more I was there with a couple of friends along with my family, no prior booking, but we managed to get seatings anyway since it's a Monday. The place have about 10-15 tables, a decent size place. The Koreans are polite, even though initially I have some issues understanding them, but they were polite and patient to explain how to order and stuff.. For our barbe, as we have a Muslim friend around, and he can't consume pork, we ordered a plate each for all the rest of the meat (Beef and Chicken). I like the marinated chicken, both versions are really tasty. And the good thing about them is that they provide a scissor for you to cut those chunky meat. A nice touch there. There were other pre-prepared food near the entrance, much like a buffet spread. There wasn't alot of choices, but at least you are not just limited to eating barbeque food if that isn't your thing. Overall, I think the experience is fine. I feel that the price for an adult is reasonable. However, I paid half price for my older daughter, and I felt that it is really expensive when her portion is included in the overall bill. I mean at age 4, she didn't really eat that much to justify even $10, let alone $15(or $16, can't rem the actual cost). I will probably visit other Korean barbeque joints before considering returning. Need to eat out at other joints before I really know who is better. :)

(I think there might be a one hour time limit for ordering, and a two hour time limit for eating, for those who want to pace themselves.) There is a penalty for leftover food, so don't go overboard. Some of the highlights included the japchae (sweet potato noodles) and the ju mok bap (rice balls) (which you roll yourself - you'll get given some plastic gloves to do this - definitely worth it!) The meat was really good too. Staff were friendly and efficient. It's worth checking out if you like Korean BBQ.

My partner introduced me to this restaurant as one of his fave places to go to for work lunch. Bibimbap is a really addictive meal. Especially when you have the option to style it the way you like. In fact, when you order your bibimbap here you are given a sheet of choices for your vegetables, meat & rice. You just tick and choose what appeals to you. You can add extras for little extra cost. But, the meals is super cheap anyway (under $10) and are quite filling. So I guess it depends on how hungry you are when adding extras. For the health conscious, you can choose brown rice or half/half brown & white rice. All of the veggies & meat prepared are cooked to order. So they are fresh! I went for the chicken and a range of veggies. The chicken was cooked with some lovely spices and sauce. Once your meal has been cooked, you can add sauces, oil, seaweed, nuts and have a serving of Kim chi. The trick is to mix it all up and enjoy! This is such a simple and well balanced meal. Nothing complicated in flavour, it is just so yummy. The Korean fermented chilli sauce is what makes it so good. Oh, and I saw on the sign outside that they cater for events. This would be an awesome alternative for a corporate lunch instead of boring sandwiches. I will keep them in mind for catering for sure!

While…read moreit is very nice, I found out that it's not real bibimbap and really should be called a sushi bowl with salad greens. Therefore I've been a bibimbap noob this whole time who needs to try the real thing: Korean bibimbap. Anyway, I was driving near work the other day and saw a place called Jin's Bibimbar on Goodwood Road. I knew that I needed to try this place, so popped in for lunch today. I am really happy that I did, because this place is the bibim-bomb, yo! When I entered the shop, one of the cooks came out and explained how it works. They have a form with check boxes on it that you tick and fill in your name. There are different types of rice or lettuce with no rice, cooked veggies, raw salads and meat/tofu/fish sections. You can pick a rice, 6 veggies/salads and one meat or tofu choice for $9.50 and any extras you add are either 50c or $1.50 depending on what you get. I chose chicken with mixed white and brown rice, broccoli, spinach, bean shoots, mushrooms, seaweed salad, carrot and cooked egg. The egg cost me 50c extra. They then make it up for you on the spot and you can choose your sauces and apply them to your taste. I chose their chili sauce, some sesame oil, kimchi, peanuts and some chili aoli. They also have dry seaweed, and some other Korean sauces that I didn't know. The flavour is amazing and it's a really tasty and filling lunch. I'll definitely be back.

We ordered the Kimchi Jeon (kimchi pancake), which was crispy and full of flavour. The Dolsot Bibimbap came in a heated bowl that scorched the rice that came into contact with it, rendering the rice crunchy and slightly burnt, like finding the socarrat at the bottom of a good paella. The chef herself came out to mix the bowl up, stirring in the gochujang to our diner's taste and absolute delight! The Seolleong Tang (Ox bone broth with slices of beef brisket, rice cake slices and potato noodles) was full of the kind of flavour one gets only from very, very slow cooking. We also ordered a pot of tea for two, and were told we could have it topped up when we required. The service was friendly and warm. We had a very satisfying meal, and look forward to coming back for the grilled meat dishes and the chef's signature dish - the Dak Manul (pan-fried chicken, marinated in crushed fresh garlic, with special soy sauce).

I'm pretty sure I'd seen this restaurant a couple of times before while driving up the road, but I…read morenever bothered to go in until my friend told me that there was a good Korean restaurant over on Payneham Road and I realized this was it. Being called Sushi Gallery, I originally thought this might be some small Japanese sushi restaurant, however upon further inspection it became clear that it was not... well not exactly. Now, they do serve sushi (though you have to pre-order in order for them to make it apparently) and they do have some Japanese dishes such as Tonkatsu and Okonomiyaki. However, past that, their primary mains are Korean dishes and from the way design their menu to include Korean words to how they traditionally serve Kimchi and other side dishes along with the mains, I am certain that what this place is primarily a Korean restaurant that happens to serve Japanese food as well. Either way, I'm not too fussed with the details. I like both Korean and Japanese food, so for me I get the best of both worlds. When I was there last, we ordered a Chicken Katsu, a Dolsot Bibimbap and theses Okonomiyaki balls (which were called something else in Korean but I forget the name). The meat for the chicken katsu was abit dry, but the other two korean dishes were excellent as were the sides that accompanied them. I get the feeling that Korean dishes are probably more up the chef's alley. It's not a very big shop, so during dinner time it can get full very quickly. The time I went was just before the crowd arrived so we were extremely lucky that day to get a seat. There was only one person in the front of house who was taking orders, serving and accepting payments. I get the feeling that this may be a family run operation but right now I'm just full of assumptions. The decor inside is simple but elegant and gives the place that classic oriental feel so you know that you're in either a Korean or Japanese restaurant. I'll be heading back there to scope out more of their dishes. I almost feel reluctant to write this review as I know that once people catch wind of this place, they are going to want to go to it, and once they do they will keep coming back and I may not have anywhere to sit any more because it becomes so popular. Ok, maybe I'm OCD-ing a little bit about the potential of the place, but for me, this is going to be my go to Korean restaurant from now on, and as such I'd be more than happy to keep it my little secret.

I called in to this little shopfront restaurant to get some takeaway fried rice, so I can't really…read morereview what's on offer based on that generic takeaway dish. However, there were a couple of things about the place that compelled me to write about it anyway. First, I'm no scholar of the Orient, but the three guys running the place looked and sounded Korean to me. No bad thing, since the fried rice tasted very natural and fresh without some of the flavours added in many Chinese restaurants, and it was cooked while I waited - well, the vegetable and meat parts were - rather than just ladled out of some huge wok. To while away the time, I asked the front of house bloke what Hong Bao meant. He didn't know, or said he didn't, but Wiki knows. Hong Bao was a eunuch sea captain of the Yongle dynasty who in 1421 may have sailed as far as Mogadishu and Mecca, and maybe, according to some experts, to Australia. Wherever he went, the special fried rice from his namesake restaurant is very good. So that's about it. The place is small, neat and clean. Generous serves of rice and noodles are $14, with 'cuisine' dishes $20 for small or $35 for large serves. I'm guessing that two people could share a noodle or rice dish and a large 'cuisine' dish. The menu is fairly short - nine rice or noodle dishes and six cuisine ones. Again, I'm guessing that they could knock up other dishes by request. Two Asian ladies who were dining in while I was there looked pretty happy with their lot. There are pictures of the meals on the wall to help you out, and there's a small fridge with beer in it. It appears that there's nothing too fancy happening here, but it all looks fresh and good value for money. Next time, I'll try dining here rather than just taking rice away. So, all good, but I didn't really do more than scratch the surface, thus 3 stars.
