While we expected a pain management based treatment plan, Dr. Johar was willing to make the call to refer us for PT and thankfully that has been a very successful course of treatment. I guess with board certifications in physical medicine as well as pain management he really understands when he should treat a patient for pain versus when to attempt to refer for another type of treatment. Thank you Dr. Johar!

This is a racket. A patient referred by his primary-care physician for medical marijuana to relieve…read morechronic pain due to botched knee replacements is charged $367.50 for a brief consultation, then referred for an MRI and some kind of spinal test (both of which are unnecessary, unwanted, and expensive). You'd have to go back to review the unnecessary tests, of course, and that would probably cost another $367.50--and I'd wager there'd be no prescription then, either. Clearly, this guy is just trying to maximize his profit, not treat patients. Stay away! When I called later to get a copy of his office notes to take to a reputable provider recommended by my primary-care physician, I was told I had to pay to copy 38 pages. It simply is not credible that he has 38 pages of notes for a 10-minute visit. This guy is milking his patients for all the money he can get, not providing care. Sigh. Once again, he refers to medical records, which he did not request in advance nor offer to review. All he did was order unnecessary and expensive tests and ask me to come back, and pay another outrageous fee. 1. Dr. Johar appears to have no actual presence in New Jersey, so the whole premise is a sham. (The NJ listing shows a fictive address that I could walk to, but he does not practice there.) 2. The "physician's notes" I requested consisted of copies of three pages of a form I'd filled out and which he initialed. His only effort to record our visit was this form, alas. 3. The records came with a form (never before given me) that insists there must be two visits (and, thus, two fees), but it also says he takes most insurance. Mine is quite common, but he does not accept it. 4. The two scrips he gave me (I'll post pictures if I can) are both from New York--and invalid in New Jersey. Again, from the get-go, I indicated that I lived in--and required help in--NJ. They are also completely illegible.

I had been living with increasing pain from a herniated disc that at one point was so bad I thought I'd never work again, let alone watch a movie in a theatre or sit in a plane long enough to take a real vacation. I was on disability from work a couple of times, and had gotten to the point where I thought I was just one of those people destined to take opiates and watch daytime TV for the rest of my life with bad gray roots coming in. At the time, the ADR surgery was pretty new, so we considered a fusion briefly, but I was concerned about loss of mobility. I am so glad I selected this surgery and this surgeon! Dr. Stieber is exceedingly competent but he's also NICE and he cares about his patients as people. For my surgery (performed at NYU), he brought in a fabulous anesthesia specialist who seriously listened to me regarding my tendency to become quiet nauseous with general anesthesia and doubled up on the anti-emetic as a result. I was back at work in just 10 DAYS after the surgery, an amazing feat in my opinion, as I am part of a Facebook group of people who had the same or similar issues and surgeries. I had one of the absolute best experiences of anyone in that group. In fact, my mobility after the surgery is better than it had been in years. I am just so impressed and grateful, and every time i bang my head at karaoke, I think how lucky I am to have had Dr. Stieber as my surgeon. THANK YOU! Also, his office team is great too!

I am currently a new minted MD. I graduated medical school in May 18' - I could not have done this…read morewithout the expert care I received from Dr. Canty. I was a semi-professional hockey player prior to medical school, I have multiple herniated discs from years of full-contact ice hockey that created a huge problem early in my third year of medical school when I was just starting my clinical rotations as a student. These rotations required me to be on my feet for 12-16 hours a day, 5-6 days a week assisting with physically taxing procedures such as CPR amongst other things. In November of 2017 I had a major crisis, I was suffering from debilitating pain to the point where I was unsure if I would have to take a leave of absence from medical school to have surgery. If you go to a surgeon with a problem their answer is generally to cut, its their job, its all they know. I was told by one surgeon to get two discs removed and my vertebrae fused which would have inevitably delayed my graduation, and required months of painful recovery. I sought out a pain management doctor who was close to my home, who gave me an injection that gave almost no relief and he refused to give me another one for 3 more months despite me telling him I couldn't function enough to do what was required on the wards., again facing having to leave school because of my pain. He recommendation to wait 3 months was based off of outdated recommendations. I found Dr. Canty looking for an alternative pain management doctor who understood my need to work. Dr. Canty successfully managed my pain with injections throughout my 3rd and 4th year of medical school that gave 100 percent relief for weeks at a time. Towards the end of medical school I realized I needed more relief than just a few weeks of pain relief and Dr. Canty offered to perform a procedure that would permanently relieve my pain and would have me back to work the next day. He performed a minor surgery that completely alleviated all of my pain. Waking up from the surgery I could instantly feel my pain was gone, I returned to work the next day as he promised. I was no longer living from injection to injection. I have ZERO pain, weakness or numbness to this day, almost a year later. From one physician to another I can say with sincerity he saved my life. I would not be able to be helping my patient today was it not for his expert knowledge and care. As a resident physician in a busy emergency department I am often asked by my supervisors "Is what I am doing, what I would want done for my own family member?" -- I am writing this review because I would trust Dr. Canty and his staff with my own family, and with myself if I ever need him again. He is truly an expert and his office runs like a well oiled machine. Pain management is emerging into a huge field, especially in the midst of the opioid epidemic. Dr. Canty in my opinion, from my experience with him over the last two years is truly an expert, if not the best in all of NYC, and I would recommend him to anyone with any type of chronic or debilitating pain. I would not be here today, saving lives myself, had he not saved mine. -Max Lazarus

His academic achievements speak for themselves. What sets him apart from other physicians is his drive to actually make a difference and provide relief from pain, which many of us have been told is in our minds, or we have to just deal with because everything's been tried. That isn't always the case. Dr Canty has gone out of his way, cancelled his personal plans to accommodate my own schedule to treat a chronic condition that I thought would never go away. I am a physician and I can assure you that you're in the best hands with Dr Canty. There's so many different types of treatments that many doctors don't know about.
