Don't try to walk in, the door is locked and you either have to call the number for entry or make desperate eye contact with an employee to get inside. It is a very small and narrow store, typical for anyplace that carries antiques. I thought I had to make an appointment to browse, but I just called and walked in a few minutes after. Things that caught my eye were books, woven baskets, and the teapots. There is truly something for everyone here. There were two men in the store today and they helped me a lot. I now know where to go if I need my pearls restrung or a new bail for my jade pendants. If you get lost - it's in the alley next to Phoenix Bakery. I seriously want to give this place 5 stars because they have an extensive array of jewelry... Jade, gold, etc. But I won't. They validate if you park at the tall building next to Bamboo Lane. Very hard to find, by the way, so just look for Phoenix Bakery and the store is down the very small alley at the corner where you see the bakery. Yes, it looks like the kind of alley where you can get mugged. Don't worry. I don't think you will. The man inside sounded helpful. The woman was, too, but every time I asked if the jade I like is real she would answer with "Oh, I can't guarantee. It's so hard to tell these days because they color the jades to make it greener." I mean, come on. You're selling stuff you're not sure of? And yes, I still bought a small pendant. *hangs head* Anyway, I didn't know jade can be so expensive. I was quoted $40K for the best bangle. What the heck. Excuse me while I go sell one of my kidneys. Well, I think I'll just go buy the jade bangle I found on Macy's instead. Jin Hing Co is a family owned business in Chinatown. It's a little hard to find, tucked away on Bamboo Lane which is more of an alley way than a road. If you turn in where Phoenix Bakery is, just go a little ways and you'll see it on the left hand side. He'll also validate your parking in the nearby lot (can't remember what it's called). The owner Bob is very helpful and willing to negotiate. If you tell him what sort of things you're looking for or bring photos, he'll work with you on finding items that match your wants/needs and keep an eye out for things he might come across and hold them for you. He's fair with his prices and trust worthy. Most things like gold, silver, etc. go for fair market value, but there is always a little wiggle room especially if you're purchasing more items. There store is small but carries a variety of items from antiques (snuff bottles, vases, plates), antique stands, jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, rings), jade pieces, gold, silver, coral, ivory, etc. I've spent literally an entire week at the store before and thought I'd seen all there was to see, but somehow ended up finding a new treasure each day! Bob can also polish, clean and size your jewelry. He's someone you can trust with your pieces, and I don't worry when I leave them with him for a few days. I went in today looking for a couple of pendants within my budget and the owner was very helpful even though I wasn't entirely sure of the styles that I wanted. He and his assistant were very patient while I had taken a phone call and also when I couldn't decide between different pieces. He also helped me to size the chains I needed. My wife and I came to Chinatown looking for a 24kt gold necklace and special pendant. We didn't have any store targeted, so we just parked and started walking. We stepped into a bakery for sesame ball treat and asked the lady behind the counter if she could recommend a jewelry store and she pointed us to this place. It's kinda hidden in an alley so you can easily miss it. There's a sign posted on the window that says appointment only or by referral. We were neither but they opened the doors to us regardless. Once inside, we found exactly what we were looking for. However, since it was our first spot, we excused ourselves to check out about half a dozen other shops on Broadway. We couldn't believe... the other shops were quoting us $200-300 more for just the chain and not even including the pendant! The main thing about this store is that the owner (Bob?) has maintained this family business after his father passed for decades. Unlike, the other stores, there was no wheeling and dealing. He gave an honest and fair price and stuck to it which came out way less than the other stores. Plus, there was no language barrier nor communication issue with Bob like we experienced at some of the other stores... but hey, this is Chinatown.
