Recently brought in a guitar to be set up to Jim's. In the end he ended up doing a fantastic job. Jim knows his stuff and charged a very reasonable rate for the work he did. Only caveats is that it took about a month for the work to get done. I also had to help him find all my stuff as I brought the guitar in a gig bag. Jim is an older gentleman and a bit of an eccentric so keep that in mind while dealing with him. He does have a wonderful selection of acoustic and electric guitars suitable for weekend warriors and beginners. Prices seemed very fair for the pieces I checked out. Overall I recommend him if you're looking to get some work done on your guitar or bass or buy a decent guitar at a great price. Highly recommend to anyone looking for help or purchasing an instrument. I needed to get my old violin fixed because the pegs were slipping. Jim is such a great guy, can't say enough about him. He informed me that I had the half-size violin and that I should get a full-size (I didn't know there was a difference). He even fixed the pegs on my old violin and stringed the instrument for me so I could sell it online and make a few extra bucks. I talked with him for about 3 hours. If you're looking for a music shop that isn't looking to make a quick buck and genuinely cares about what you really need, look no further. 1. He forget that he has a project/work ( my guitar ) . When I tried to follow up he keep saying that he already started working on it. After few days I called again to follow up. He said the same thing. 2. He never confirm with me or ask consent if he'll proceed some work. I only ask him to lower the action of my guitar. He ended up telling me that he filed the sharp edges which cost me more $$$. 3. I brought my A/E guitar. Electronic was working when I brought it there. When I pick it up he told me that he checked it & it wasn't working. & he didn't even change my strings when he said that he filed the frets & lower the action etch. I was very disappointed when I pickup my guitar paying overpriced for the work that was not needed. He even broke the saddle & charged me for that one plastic peace. I just scratched my head & left. I didn't show him that I was disappointed w/ his work. As much as possible I want to support my local guitarshop coz my previous one already closed because of pandemic. 4. When you bring your guitar to him or to any shops. Show them that your guitar works fine except the work that you need to be done. 5. I brought home my guitar with a broken electronic, used strings , broken saddle, still some sharp edges ( I could file that myself ) , paid $135. Tsk tsk . Never coming back to his shop. 6. Awesome place with amazing customer service!!! I went here because a string broke on my classical guitar and though I've re-strung steel strings before, I felt like I wasn't stringing my nylon string correctly, so I called them up and asked if they'd be able to do it. The guy was super nice so I took my guitar in. Once I went in, he took a look at the guitar and showed me where I'd made a mistake and started restringing my guitar for me. While he worked, he made conversation and was super nice, told me a lot about guitars and in the middle of restringing, he even stopped once to go and grab me another guitar to play while I waited. At the end, he was asking me what other instruments I wanted to play and I mentioned the Violin, so after he was done, he brought me a violin from the back, taught me some stuff and gave me a mini lesson and then let me play! Also, he barely charged me anything for restringing. All in all, an absolutely wonderful place and AMAZING customer service! :) Will definitely be going back in the future for all future guitar concerns. read more

I have to agree with the other 5 Stars... Great "Mom & Pop" music store in Fremont, very few of these around anymore. The owner Jim is an old cat who chats and talks with you about your purchase and does not try to oversell you. He finds out what you need and gives you options to choose from. My daughter needed a practice amp for her Bass Guitar to keep in her bedroom, he sold us a nice little amp to keep by her bed that's got good tone and volume, but not so massive, it's rattling the house down. Buy local and help keep these old fashioned institutions going! read more

nice guy, but awkward... went in after getting a brand new dean electric. had it for a couple days wen i realized a couple strings snapped behind the locking nut. got some strings and tried to fix it myself, but seeing as its got a floating tremolo i dnt kno wat im doing so much on those. so i brought it down to jim. got in around 1 pm on a saturday. we sat around for a little bit talking about the guitar and wat i needed done. he says its easy, charges me then i stand awkwardly in the shop for about another 20 mins as theres 2 other ppl in the shop standing around awkwardly waiting their turn, i say alright thanks see u tomaro. he says its easy, he should have it done either that day or the next depending how busy he gets. so i show up a couple hours before closing the next day, same deal except he was eating lunch. we began talking about the guitar again, i tell him dnt worry about the time i just need it done right. he says again, today or tomaro. i go back home. he calls me 3 hours later and says to come on down and pick up my guitar. i get there and he forgot to tighten a string down all the way and the guitar isnt tuned. i tell him and he just tells me do it.... thats y i paid u $35!!! i can restring a guitar! i cant adjust the tremolo!!! worst customer service ever. i could have learned how to fix my guitar on utube and done it 10 times already by the time this guy got it done. guitar now has a buz and intonation is off. but its got new strings and its almost in tune!!! fml overpriced, disorganized beyond belief, and incompetent. good guy but the shop sux balls. if u want some dirt cheap vynals/vintage equipment than its not bad, so long as u haggle with the guy a bit. other than that, go to allegro or guitar center. even if u live next door to jims, its worth going a few minutes down the road to allegro. trust me. read more

I got my violin and it sounded great! He (Jim) gave me some tips and some facts about the violin and he also made some interestig conversations with my mom. He was really nice and along with his friends plus Mr. Ming (he's a cat). I wish I could give this place 0 stars, too bad thats not an option. DO NOT DO BUSINESS HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE! I had a gig this past Saturday at 8 pm with my jazz trio over at Dizzy's Coffee Lounge and my bass string popped during soundcheck at 6pm. The closest music store was Jim's, and I wouldnt be able to make it back in time for my gig with new strings if it weren't for him BUT IT IS STILL THE WORST EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD. I walked in and NO ONE WAS THERE except this gentleman in a reflector jacket who told me he wasnt a worker. When I told him i needed to buy strings he said he would leave to go grab the owner. So the owner walks in after 10 minutes (remember that I have a gig to get to) and finally helps me out. The part that agitates me the most was the price. Doing music only in my free time, I cant be spending too much on bass strings so I buy d'Addario XL strings. They usually retail for about 15$ both online and at other small shops. Jimbo over here, however, marks them up at a price of $25!!! DONT FORGET TO ADD TAX AND IM NOW SPENDING 30$ on strings that SHOULD COST ME $20. NOT COOL, BIMBO JIMBO! Finally, after selling me wayy overpriced strings, Bimbo Jimbo over here spends another 5 minutes writing me up a receipt because he cant find any of his materials because his shop is a fucking pigs sty. There were parts, tools, amps, food, garbage ALL OVER his display counter top. It is beyond me how this place stays in business. Only shopped here as my last resort right before a gig. read more

The owner, spent more than 30 minutes showing guitar, playing, explaining pro and con. Decided to buy one , he showed my son how to tune, take care of it, offered a bit discount. And price was reasonable. What I liked is the passionate dealing with customer. He would not know I will buy anything at all or not. Jim gets a big fat five stars for being honest and super dooper friendly and helpful Always! The nicest cat with a music store. Buy sell and trade anytime. The inventory is up and down but he does deal in lots of used guitars and amps, violins, effects pedals, horns, ukes, guitar and bass parts, etc... Usually in stock would be a bunch of great priced middle of the road quality guitars and basses. He is a collector himself of vintage Gibson and Fenders, British and American amps and effects pedals, so some very cool high quality vintage gear does fly in and out of that door. Jim also is an expert repair man for all guitars, basses and most amplifiers. He can do a simple guitar set up for you or an entire re-fret job, install new or vintage pickups and electronics. He took alot of time and care with me to help me build one of my custom American Fender reissue 1966 Telecasters. If you play an instrument you MUST vist his cool little shop. Good deals on guitars, great for beginners and experienced players alike to find deals on new and vintage gear. This is a good place to buy a guitar for the kids/yourself or even hang out for a bit and talk shop. I will say that I'd recommend that you don't get soldering or electronic work done here. I had some new pickups installed in my strat and it was some of the sloppiest I've seen. Jim dripped solder here and there, globbed it into connections, left shrink wrap loose over a connection that made noise and he tucked a another noisy solder connection away a guitar body cavity out of view. Every time I've had to go back through that EMG install I find something new that makes me shake my head. Nice guy to talk to, good place for buying band instruments or whatever but Jim is but disorganized and sloppy in his detailed technical work, at least in my experience. His "work bench" says it all...strewn about with junk. read more
