I felt like I got hosed. When I was getting my winter tires installed elsewhere, One of my tires was caked in grease on the inside and I was asked by a known and trusted mechanic if I had some work done recently on my front end. I had a lower control arm and sway bar replaced at Jim's Automotive three weeks earlier. I was advised that my CV boot had been burned and that the grease leaked out and it looked like a silicon repair had been attempted, unsuccessfully.
I took my car back to Jim's and was told that the CV boot was damaged before my repair. I don't know how you determine when plastic was damaged. but they must have a forensic lab there. When I initially brought my vehicle in for a noise in the front end, I would hope that (a) the tire would have come off and been checked and all the grease seen, or (b) the technician would have noticed the damaged CV boot and my wheel covered with grease. If neither of these happened, if I had not had my tires changed, this damage would not have been discovered early and this would have led to an expensive future repair, not to mention any danger that I might have encountered due to it.
In the end, they denied causing the damage and I forked out another payment. Being short staffed makes it difficult for a tech to admit that he needs another hour or two on a vehicle because he damaged something, so he tries to cover it up. That is not the service they advertise. read more
