Context:
Heading back down to Gold Coast, and seeing what ramen places I could check out.
Zomato was horrible for discovering places (only 2 ramen joints showed up for Gold Coast).
Found out about this place (and Ramen Danbo, which I also considered) via Yelp - will be switching to it from now on for my food discovery needs.
Zomato seriously needs to get its shit together.
First Impressions:
- Very busy on Sunday night at 7:30pm
- Lighting on the atmospheric side, jap pop music playing
- BBQ fumes aren't drawn off in the way you get at BBQ restaurants, so can get a bit stuffy if you have respiratory issues
The Goods:
- Ordered winter special Yokohama Tonkotsu IEKEI Noodle ($13) with extra pork belly (+$2)
- Ramen took 15-20min to arrive
- Tastes alright, noodles chewy, broth is thick enough
- Did not seem very substantial, even with the extra pork belly slices (5 in total, 1 to 2mm in thickness) - there is maybe one knuckle-volume worth of noodles - and without free extra noodles (which I was counting on), there is no "fat and happy" sense of contentment afterwards
- No, there's no free extra noodle - the waitress does not even seem familiar with the concept, which is disappointing: Hakataya has it, and so does Genkotsu (and it's *infinite* refills there). An extra serving of noodle costs $3
- Has free all-you-can-drink self-serve miso soup - which is a clever complement to their all-you-can-eat buffet (it's cheaper if you fill yourself up on soup)
Other Notes:
- There is chilli spice powder over at the common area where you fill up on water and miso soup (instead of being at each table or seating area). There is no chilli oil or pickled ginger visible
- EFTPOS $10 minimum
- No BYO drinks
- Parking lot and easy street parking nearby (mostly 1P 9am-5pm Mon-Sat)
Verdict:
- Not at all optimised for the ramen experience - you'll have to get your food coma from the BBQ Buffet ($50 for adults, 90min time limit)
- Ok to get your ramen fix if you're in the area, or want to check out special menus for the ramen read more
