My adult brother and sisters hoped that we could take care of her on our own until she recovered. We soon realized that although one of us could be with her most of the time, we needed some help, not really medical help because she had visiting nurses and a visiting physician. We need a caring person who could help her get to the bedside commode, keep her hydrated and just try to make her feel better. Our wonderful sister-in-law took it upon herself to try to find caregivers that would care for our mother like us. She scoured the yellow pages and called Granny Nannies. After speaking to the owner, Heidi, she was so impressed that we set up a meeting with an aide for the very next day. We all met Paula, a retired RN, and liked her immediately. She started the next day, sitting by our mother's bedside, helping to make her more comfortable and coaxing her to eat and drink. Then, several days later, we needed help overnight because our mother was very restless and needed someone to be right there with her during the night. Although some of us were coming in from out of town and my siblings who lived there were often spending the night, we were simply not equipped to provide care during the night and then try to work during the day. So, Angelina came to be with our mother so we could sleep. After several weeks, we moved my mother to my sister's house nearby so my sister was there during the night if my mother needed her, although the aide was right there with her. My mother was slowly getting weaker and needed constant attention because she was unable to do anything for herself. Finally, we needed a third aide to be there from 3pm until 10pm to have coverage the full 24-hours a day. So, we called Heidi again and\, like before, she sent another lovely young lady to meet us. Sara began the next day and we were her first clients with Granny Nannies. She was so wonderful with our mother, sat with her and watched the old movies that our mother loved (but couldn't really see or hear too well), helped do everything she could to try to make her more comfortable. She looked up smoothie recipes online to try to come up with something "not sweet" that my mother would drink. The night before our mother died, Sara was talking to us about some candles and room sprays that might help our mother's anxiety or help her sleep better. After hearing her ideas, I immediately got online and ordered some vanilla and lavender pillow sprays that promote sleep. My mother died the next day and her Memorial Mass was a week later. Both Heidi and Sara came to the Mass to pay their respects. I and my entire family can wholeheartedly recommend Granny Nannies if you need help caring for loved ones. When I met Heidi after Mass, she said that she has an elderly mother and she would not hire anyone that she wouldn't have care for her own mother. It was very difficult for us to even consider bringing in outsiders to care for our mother and we knew she would hate having strangers in her house. But after meeting Paula, Angelina and Sara and seeing how they interacted with our mother, we thanked God that we had found them. And our mother was, too, because, weak as she was, she would take their hand and lay it against her cheek and say "thank you."

From the outset, any attempt to ask questions or participate in my own care was shut down. When I raised concerns about medications being prescribed and referenced the actual FDA labeling, the response was not clarification or discussion, but outright dismissal. There was no willingness to engage with evidence or explain clinical reasoning. Input from the patient was clearly unwelcome and seemed like she took any input personally. The interaction was tense and adversarial. The tone was defensive and combative, and I felt spoken to in a way that was dismissive and degrading rather than professional. Asking reasonable, informed questions was treated as a problem instead of a normal and appropriate part of medical care. What was most alarming was the complete lack of openness to being questioned or corrected, even when objective information was presented. That alone made me deeply uncomfortable trusting any aspect of the care being provided. To compound the experience, the billing felt excessive and disproportionate to the quality of care and communication I received, leaving me with serious concerns about priorities at this practice. I left feeling stressed, unheard, and shaken by how poorly I was treated for simply advocating for myself. Patients who value evidence-based medicine, respectful communication, and being treated with basic dignity should think very carefully before scheduling here.

He went from reluctant to recently requesting to be the Abbington spokesperson to prospective residents! Dad feels like the entire Abbington staff genuinely cares about him and what he needs -- and we agree. It's as if they've joined our family to help care for him. Artisha and Shaena have been especially patient and understanding, and they're clearly great leaders, which shows in the consistent, happy, hard-working staff around them. Dad raves about the food and has enjoyed getting to know some of the other residents. Abbington Pickerington has been such a blessing to my dad and our entire family. We wandered around for about 10 minutes and never found anyone to help us. There was no cell service so we couldn't call anyone. We pushed the call button to get someone to help us and no one came. I've tried to call multiple times with no answer. I even left a message and no one returned the call. Plus there were urine stains on the couch cushions. Not a good impression of the facility.

They also go out to hear music, see shows, eat lunch and take part in programs offered at the Whitehall Senior Center and Whitehall Parks and Rec. There are activities within the community like bingo, exercise and crafts to keep mom busy. When mom does not want to be involved she has a nice apartment with most of her favorite things for her home. She never has to eat alone and I like knowing that she is not just opening a can of soup and only eat that. The food is very good and a nice variety. At this point, my mother is not using the nursing services that are offered. I feel good knowing that when she does need help the staff will already know her and she will be comfortable with the friendly staff.

Let me assure you what a BLESSING this inpatient hospice house is for Columbus. As someone who travels along the East coast providing hospice care for multiple hospitals/hospice, OhioHealth provides top-notch care! These patients/families are not only made comfortable in a beautiful environment, but they are also provided compassion. Based on some of the reviews, some folks simply do not understand that if a patient is placed in a hospice house--they are dying and hospice appropriate. Most of these patients are experiencing symptoms that were too difficult to manage at home or they are here briefly to give the families 5 days of respite. When/how long the patient lives is between the patient and the universe/God. If clinicians could cure the patient, they would. The majority of these patients have reached the end of what aggressive treatments and medicines can cure/fix--to do more would only prolong suffering. Comfort care becomes the priority! Our job is to make sure they are comfortable and provide education for families. As physicians and nurses, we have medications to assist the patient as they near end of life. Social Workers provide resources. Chaplains provide spiritual support. It's a multifaceted approach to put the patient first. Again, I really do hope Columbus realizes what a rare and special gift Kobacker is to the community--many cities are not so fortunate to have inpatient hospice facilities! Blessings!
