The staff are amazing, and truly care about their residents. The facility is by no means brand new, but it is kept neat and clean, and has been renovated recently. The food is top-notch, and much better than any you would expect at a similar facility. When the staff genuinely cares, it really makes a huge difference in the overall atmosphere and attitude of the residents.

The spinal injury left me with a weak leg and I was unable to walk. After three hours of physical therapy and occupational therapy per day for two weeks, I was able to walk with a walker and I'm now at home. (To the cat's great relief.) Following the surgery I was not allowed to bend or twist my back or to lean. The physical and occupational therapists helped me understand what I was capable of and taught me new ways to perform daily tasks using devices such as a reacher to pick things up and a tool to put socks on. Everyone was caring, helpful, and supportive.

Smiths Mill is a loving community like no other. And trust me, my dad was at 3 others previous to Smiths Mill. They treat my dad like a king, which he says all the time. My mother has Parkinson's that is accompanied with occasional delirium…read more She developed a UTI which increased the delirium and temporarily decreased her physical strength to walk and stand. We had spent five days in hospital prior to being discharged to this facility. Our Social Worker at the hospital was horrible. She gave us five choices of facilities. This was the only one with beds so we came here. I would not recommend this place for a patient that has advanced Parkinson's or even moderate Parkinson's, especially if they have delirium and they cannot stand for themselves Why? They did not have a sensor on the bed that alert support staff that their fall risk patient might try to stand up without supervision. Many rehab places do you have this monitoring,by the way, we've been in two of them so far Also, the ratio of support staff (meaning aids and nurses) is kinda high for the number of patients I witnessed. I'm not sure what they will quote but what my I saw and what my mother experienced. There were a lot of delays getting care simply because there wasn't enough bodies to provide the care what needed often there were long waits. They have physical therapy, occupational therapy, and I think speech therapy here I feel my mother regressed from the point. She was admitted to the point that she was discharged. She was there for 4 to 5 weeks. She also didn't enjoy it, which is unusual. She usually looks forward to her physical therapy as for some weird reason that she thinks she can beat Parkinson's. I do not feel that her medication was given to her within the proper timeframe that are a medication dictated. With Parkinson's it's very important to stay within a strict timeframe of dopamine otherwise it's ineffective and managing her delirium. There seem to be a lot of activities. My mother did not partake in many of them. She did enjoy bingo. They do have two dining rooms for the residents to dine in. all serviced by the same chef. chef does a wonderful job with the meal preparation for such a large number of residents I did not like the way my mother was discharged. I am power of attorney and they had her sign discharge papers without her POA present and just left me a voicemail. Discharge was abrupt. It didn't need to be. This place has lots of potential -so much. I just feel like it needs different administration and may be a bigger budget so that they can hire some more staff. They definitely need that.

A Five-Star Haven for Mom (and Peace of Mind for Me!)…read more After interviewing 9 assisted living facilities across Columbus this past March, I did what any thorough first born son would do: I created a spreadsheet, took notes, captured all the move in and monthly costs, and probably annoyed more than a few executive directors with my questions. But the moment I stepped into The Inn at Bear Trail, I knew I'd found "the one." And I'm not just saying that because it smelled like fresh flowers and good decisions--though it absolutely did - even the Memory Care unit! (trust me that's a key clue that they are on top of things). What sealed the deal? The staff. These folks are the real deal - Starting with Mike Harvey who runs a tight ship over there and is super attentive via text or voice at all times. His aids and nurses are professional, warm, and genuinely there when you need them. They move through the halls like a well-choreographed dance team, always available, always positive, and always one step ahead of what my mom needs next. They're proactive about her care, catching details I'd miss and implementing solutions before problems even arise. It also did not hurt that they were the most affordable option out of all the other AL places I toured in the Columbus area. My mom is thriving, and honestly, so am I. Knowing she's in such capable, compassionate hands? Priceless. If you're searching for the best care for your Mom or Dad and you want them in the Columbus area stop searching. You've found it. We are paying a significant amount for care, yet the overall experience has been disappointing. The…read morequality of the food is minimal, and residents are restricted to eating only during designated meal times. If a meal is missed, there are no adequate alternatives provided--sometimes only broth and crackers are offered. Services that are supposed to be included in the monthly fee, such as weekly cleaning and laundry, were not consistently completed without repeated reminders. It often required ongoing follow-up with staff to ensure these basic services were performed. There have also been concerning issues with care. On one occasion, a nurse attempted to administer an excessive amount of medication to my parent, which raised serious safety concerns. Additionally, the facility manager has not been particularly approachable or helpful when addressing issues. Billing has also been problematic. The most recent statement included additional charges we felt were not owed, requiring us to escalate the matter to corporate. To their credit, the corporate office was responsive, professional, and understanding of the concerns raised--many of which extend beyond what is outlined here.
